To be pissed off that Greggs vary regionally?

Why can't I get a greggs iced split in the home counties? And why are greggs bread puddings not avaliable in the south?

Are regional tastes so different that the whole uk can't enjoy a nasty but strangely alluring and edible iced split?

Omg stotties ... I’d kill for a ham stottie

outabout · 04/10/2017 10:32

There's plenty more 'South of Portsmouth', then you can nip over the water and start on France, or via the channel islands.

x2boys · 04/10/2017 10:33

Having googled Stotties they look very similar to what i would call a Barm cakeGrin

MrTrebus · 04/10/2017 10:36

@outabout there is not much South of us that is still part of the UK. Is that better?

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/10/2017 10:40

BeatriceBeaudelaire Again, this might be a regional thing... the ones I'm thinking of had an oily sort of texture? Like dream topping rather than sweetened whipped cream.

Creambun2 · 04/10/2017 10:42

I thought stotties were barms?

They do the cream iced buns in our local Greggs and we are in Kent .

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/10/2017 10:46

There were (and probably still is) some products with fresh whipped cream and some with fake cream a bit like a light whipped butter cream.

I'm fairly certain the cream iced fingers were/are fake cream. They didn't have to go in the fridge, but we had a refrigerated cabinet for the fresh cream cakes like chocolate eclairs.

We also sold unrefridgerated sandwiches that could be kept at room temperature for up to four hours even in the middle of summer and even things like tuna. I miss that sort of thing these days because I hate fridge cold food and sometimes don't have time to wait for things to come back to room temperature before I can eat them.

BarbaraofSevillle · 04/10/2017 10:47

Some stotties are massive (10 inches across) and you cut them into wedges to make sandwiches out of. Or you can get individual sized ones.

x2boys · 04/10/2017 10:47

No idea Cream it looks like a Barm to me im in Greater manchester we dont call rhem stotties in my townGrin

x2boys · 04/10/2017 10:49

Tubbyinthehottub · 04/10/2017 10:54

Stotties are not barms. They are much heavier and nicer. Mmmm, wish I was in the NE now. I used to have my packed lunch sandwich made from stottie every day.

wheresmyphone · 04/10/2017 10:55

icednun2

I think a Stottie is a massive sandwich made with thick thick bread. You would slice a massive round Bread and use part of it to make a portion.

A barm is flatter, and with light dusting of flour on top. The whole barm would be sliced in two and both bits used for a single portion.

I will step away and prepare to get flamed for my ignorance🤔

x2boys · 04/10/2017 10:57

Chip Barms and pie barms are a local delicacyGrin

cowgirlsareforever · 04/10/2017 11:02

I haven't had a chip butty in ages. They are delicious.

GherkinSnatch · 04/10/2017 11:02

Is a Donkey's Lug in anyway similar to a sous lug? It's something I've only ever seen in Baynes the Bakers in Fife. See also - the mighty Blobby Biscuit.

outabout · 04/10/2017 11:04

Don't forget 'oven bottoms'. Similar to barms but the other side of the Lancashire/Yorkshire divide.

JonSnowsWife · 04/10/2017 11:05

Oh yes I always stock up on their mince pies!

Creambun2 · 04/10/2017 11:06

I used to use a place called "pork shop" where they did a breakfast in a full sized stottie and it was amazing.

FoofFighter · 04/10/2017 11:06

ahh quit your moaning, at least you all HAVE a Greggs!!
My nearest one is 120 mile round trip away!!! Every once in a while someone will start a rumour that we are getting one, but it never happens....

I do miss chicken oval bites, apple danish and lardy cake :(

Creambun2 · 04/10/2017 11:09

What is their really a place with a 60 mile trip to greggs? Are you in the Highlands?

OP posts:
BarbaraofSevillle · 04/10/2017 11:11

There are no Greggs in Cornwall IIRC. I suppose the Cornish wouldn't want an influx of cheap imitation 'Cornish' pasties.

Have Greggs stopped unlawfully calling their pasties that don't meet the Cornish specification 'Cornish pasties'?

FoofFighter · 04/10/2017 11:13

yes creambun2, but an area within civilisation still Wink We've got Matalan, Tesco, Asda, B&M, loads of big names BUT NO GREGGS!! Sad

RhiannonOHara · 04/10/2017 11:15

Foof, I've thought vaguely seriously about approaching Greggs with an offer to set up a franchise (I don't live anywhere remote but don't have a branch in walking distance).

You could do the same? It might be a huge hit.
