To be fed up of the s**t sleeves fashion trend

Desperate to find some decent work tops, but the only options seem to be either ballon sleeves, or sleeves with tons of pointless lace and frills attached. I'm the sort of person who dresses more for comfort and likes to sling a cardi over the top if it get cold, which doesn't lend itself to bell sleeves particularly well. Plus who comes up with the patterns? All nauseating florals that subtlety forgot. I'm also quite short with short arms, so I look bloody ridiculous. Some people seem to carry this look off, I am definitely not one of them.

Am I the only person who wants this trend to eff off ASAP?

Are there any shops that have ignored this trend completely. I have been in the usual high street shops and can't find anything.

Peak Froof - love it.

I hate ruffles of all sorts. Big boobs so I just look like an overwrapped Xmas present.

Sniv · 03/10/2017 21:24

Oooh, that H&M dress! I clicked on the floral version just to see it in its maximum badness, to discover it's managed to be even worse than I thought possible. It's actually backless.

Strike one, strike two, strike threeeeeee

TheFirstMrsDV · 03/10/2017 21:45

This bloody thread.
It started with me going to H&M to seek out horrid froof and ended with me spiffing £££ on heavy metal themed clothes for my two youngest DCs.

SilverySurfer · 03/10/2017 22:44

Honestly, some of the links have to be a joke - never seen anything so fugly.

AmaraSas · 03/10/2017 23:07

Quite like the batwing sleeves.... hides my batwing arms with room to spare 😂😂😂😂

TeddyBoy14 · 03/10/2017 23:15

Absolutely not being unreasonable AT all.

The worst offenders are those "trumpet" or "bell" sleeves or whatever the hell they're called.

They seem to be on everything at the moment Hmm.

I've found what's been on offer in the shops this year to be hideous and totally wide of the mark.

SenecaFalls · 03/10/2017 23:24

Add peep-toe boots to the list. WTF is that all about? I wear boots for warmth primarily. I'd like my toes covered, please.

TheNoodlesIncident · 03/10/2017 23:29

I've got a number of these in fairly unobtrusive colours. To be fair I mostly wear them for pyjamas, since I get cold elbows and wrists at the drop of a hat, but they'd be OK for out and about. No flounce in sight, no garish florals, no unnecessary ventilation to give you exposure and/or hypothermia.

And FirstMrsDV unlikely to splurge again on heavy metal stuff, so win-win

LoniceraJaponica · 04/10/2017 06:26

I suspect that there will be more women shopping in men's departments this winter. The last two jumpers I bought were men's jumpers. I have long arms, and it is bliss finding jumpers with arms long enough that I don't have freezing wrists. The men's cotton jumpers from M and S are perfect for me. Plus their v necks aren't as low, and suit me better.

The80sweregreat · 04/10/2017 06:39

Men's clothes are much more straightforwards!

InvisibleKittenAttack · 04/10/2017 07:00

Uniqlo is the answer! I went to bluewater and was depressed by all the sleeves and overly complex clothes, then walked into uniqlo and found a range of plain crew or v neck jumpers, with proper sleeves, and no crazy additions in a selection of colours. They had plain long sleeved tshirts and some plain, non-frilly blouses as well.

I bought 2 jumpers (£25 each, both real wool, one grey one dark red) and decided I will just go there when i next need a jumper, just not bothering with anywhere else!

LoniceraJaponica · 04/10/2017 07:15

I wish Uniqlo would open more shops. I like to try things on before I buy.

"I'm glad I'm not on my own with this-I was worried I just hit that age where fashion does not apply"

There is no age when that happens! Not unless you choose it, and you can do that at any age.

I've been through loooong stretches where I do not buy clothes when everything in the shops is very similar and not to my taste.

And Zygones - it probably looked a bit different in the summer, when cold-shoulder tops look good, and something different for a holiday might be worth a try, even if impractical. But it doesn't transfer to autumn winter.

I probably need to get out more, because I really haven't noticed people wearing those dreadful sleeves, not do I see them on people on the telly.

What happens to clothes which are never sold, even if heavily discounted?

gunsandbanjos · 04/10/2017 08:04

Cold shoulder tops are so unflattering, I’ve yet to see one worn that isn’t fugly.

Gavisconbreath · 04/10/2017 08:53

@ Seneca

Yes peep toe boots are hideous. Why would you wear boots and expose your toes at the same time? Most people wear socks with boots don't they? If you wear socks with holes with peep toe boots, is that extra trendy? I think the concept of peep toed boots must have been dreamed up by some bloke with a toe fetish. Does this mean bondage wear/sex shop chic a thing right now? There is a bit of leather in the shops, but it's the usual leather jacket/trousers stuff.

I wonder when the high street fashion stores will realise that women do not want all these weird clothes and start doing more normal plain practical things that we actually want to buy? They are going wrong somewhere!

OohAahBird · 04/10/2017 11:22

I wanted a jumper last winter, every shop only had polo neck jumpers, could not find a v neck anywhere, I do not suit polo necks or high neck jumpers I have too much bust for them, in the end in desperation I went on ebay and bought a brand new with tags item someone else didn't want but I couldn't believe that was the only way to find a jumper! I did not think of looking in the men's section but will try that next time

InvisibleKittenAttack · 04/10/2017 16:00

I do wish some one would point out to designers that if they are targetting their clothing at woman who have stuff to do that involves leaving the house, in the UK in Autumn/winter it rains a lot, we need to be able to put a coat over the top. If I can't wear a coat with something, then it might be nice, but it's not going to be worn much. I might accidentally buy one, but I won't go back and buy in every colour. Sell one or two 'complex to wear' items, but dont fill your shops and then be surprised noone buys them!

TheFirstMrsDV · 04/10/2017 16:43

I never thought I would say this but...I love Sainsbury's clothing.
They sell a LOT of awful froof but hidden among it they have some lovely things at reasonable prices.
I am not a conventional dresser but I like stylish, fairly simple styles with a bit of edge.
Its weird that I can get so many bits from Sainsbos but struggle on the High Street.

I am sick of pouncing on a perfect tea dress (my weakness) in New Look etc only to find it has cold shoulders, metal studs, cut out back or frills round the sleeves. All four sometimes.

Collidascope · 04/10/2017 16:51

This

www.next.co.uk/gl92786s11

is one of the many 'new in' monstrosities in Next. Clearly someone is buying these hideous garments or they wouldn't be bringing more in! Own up, whoever you are, and stop spoiling shopping for the rest of us!

NameChangr678 · 04/10/2017 17:05

Oh god, I hate those fucking sleeves and those off-the-shoulder embroided "peasant-chic" tops.

Looks fucking stupid but it will be over in a year or so and then everyone will bin that crap & it will be consigned to the scrapheap of fashion history.

ForagingForFaerieGold · 04/10/2017 17:48

I think that long floaty bell or Angel sleeves look lovely in the right context but just try doing the dishes or a fry up in them and it all goes wrong. Frills and ruffles belong at the hem of a summer skirt and nowhere else. Makes me glad I can sew. Confused

BobbinThreadbare123 · 04/10/2017 17:52

I'm having an issue finding decent work tops with proper sleeves. Cardigans don't fit over ruffles. I am quite muscly too, so these sack like tops with absurdly tight, frilly, ruffly sleeves are awful. Cold shoulder tops don't work well either.

PorklessPie · 04/10/2017 17:56

YANBU. I'm yet to see anyone who can pull off a cold shoulder top.
