To be fed up of the s**t sleeves fashion trend

Desperate to find some decent work tops, but the only options seem to be either ballon sleeves, or sleeves with tons of pointless lace and frills attached. I'm the sort of person who dresses more for comfort and likes to sling a cardi over the top if it get cold, which doesn't lend itself to bell sleeves particularly well. Plus who comes up with the patterns? All nauseating florals that subtlety forgot. I'm also quite short with short arms, so I look bloody ridiculous. Some people seem to carry this look off, I am definitely not one of them.

Am I the only person who wants this trend to eff off ASAP?

Are there any shops that have ignored this trend completely. I have been in the usual high street shops and can't find anything.

Even mega rich pampered folk have to wipe their buns and wash their hands I imagine.
letzygone The trend setters must have staff for that Grin

Lweji · 03/10/2017 19:21

Is bun wiping a thing now?

Sniv · 03/10/2017 19:26

The clothes in the shops are so gimmicky at the moment, they're going to date very badly.

The clothes aimed at the younger end of the market seems to be spared a lot of the weird floofs and frills of actual clothes fro grown women at the moment. Shame I don't want to go out emblazoned with slogans about being a mermaid, a unicorn or in the babe squad, or I'd be set.

LoislovesStewie · 03/10/2017 19:26

I don't like pockets on blouses; they make me look as if my boobs are in bags!

LifeOfBriony · 03/10/2017 19:27

Another one struggling to find nice tops for work.

Tartyflette · 03/10/2017 19:29

I have a loose but dressy red blouse that I've had for donkey's years and I like it but every time I wear it the bloody fluted/flared/whatever sleeves get right on my tits. And generally on my dinner too.

I was having this exact conversation with a friend at lunch today who she said she'd unwittingly bought a fluted sleeve blouse online and had to return it as soon as it arrived because she tried it on and realised it was ridiculously impractical -- just because of the sleeves.

Plus they look mimsy.

gamerwidow · 03/10/2017 19:35

It's times like these that I pleased I've stopped doing 'fashion' and I just wear what suits my shape.
I'm sure these clothes are so minging just to design obsolescence in. No way are these looks lasting a year or more.

woodhill · 03/10/2017 19:36

Also lower necks so my bust is flattered and some decent fabrics, I don't do polyester. Ebay is my friend at the mo

Gavisconbreath · 03/10/2017 19:37

I'm glad I'm not on my own with this-I was worried I just hit that age where fashion does not apply and comfort reigns supreme.

You shouldn't have to fold your sleeves up in order to get a cardigan on in my opinion, unless you like random lumps appearing down the arms.

I think the people who design this stuff don't think about the practicalities e.g. Going up in flames when trying to boil an egg like one other poster said, or keep making spelling mistake on emails because your sleeves are draping all over the keyboard, and as for changing nappies....

I did manage to find a couple of tops that were ok in DP's in the end, but I think the only reason I did was because they were sleeveless! I think I will just have to freeze until this trend fizzles out.

There is a lot if this stuff on sales rails though. They should get the message.

Well, at least we know where the spare material from the cold shoulder cut outs are going.... into the bell sleeves.

Makes your arms look like clappers in a decrepit campanile.

Don't even start with the duvet boil in the bag coats you can't sit down it for fear of never being able to jump up in time for your tube stop, unless you've got form in the sack race.

Time to pull out the sewing machine for some judicious taking in and patching up!

FledglingFTB · 03/10/2017 19:42

The whole wizard sleeve is bloody awful. Bell bottoms for ARMS??

squishysquirmy · 03/10/2017 19:48

I found some OK blouses in Wallis recently, after looking everywhere for a smart-but-normal blouse that I could wear with a suit jacket and skirt. I found a nice shirt in Dorothy Perkins which would have been lovely were it not for the completely unnecessary dangly bits on the sleeeves - I cut them off!

Willow2017 · 03/10/2017 19:48

I wanted some new tops to, just t shirts with something a bit more exciting on them than some twee crap written in french. I want womens tops with Marvel, TWD, Dr Who, plain tops, maybe even the odd flowery top that just looks good, has all the right bits, no holes cut in it, no stupid frills and flounces and fits! (and not those damm multi pleated stretchy things that only look good on a size 8 person!) Still looking!

And I want winter polo necks with sleeves that come down to the wrists...what is the point of 1/2 or 3/4 sleeves in winter, jumpers are supposed to keep you warm!!!! And dont get me started on when you are putting a cardi or another jumper over the top and have to shove your arm up to your oxters to pull the damm sleeve down inside. TBH I just want a winter polo that will go under a jumper, they seem to be in short supply these past few years, like we live in such a warm climate we dont need them!

I wish I lived closer to a Primark

MynameisMaximus · 03/10/2017 19:51

Couldn't agree more OP. I loathe any kind of unnecessary sleeve frippery. I've been looking for knitwear over that last week or two and so many items are ruined by 'flute' sleeves or shoulder frills Confused

ProphetOfDoom · 03/10/2017 20:08

Preach!

I look like a fucking line-backer for the 49ers in ruffles or cold shoulder tops. And who wants sleeves that flap ready for take off? No wonder retail stores are struggling.

Design affordable clothes for women who have breasts & hips.

The80sweregreat · 03/10/2017 20:10

I loathe 3/4 sleeves. I have long arms, so they look really stupid on me.

SingaSong12 · 03/10/2017 20:23

See I need the 3/4 sleeves, even though they don’t sit right on me either. I’m petite but don’t like what’s out there (just a smaller selection of weird sleeves and necklines)

CJCreggsGoldfish · 03/10/2017 20:32

YANBU. I saw my mum today who was complaining about this! As a mum to a two year old there is nothing I like more than trying to prevent massive sleeves draping in dirty nappies.

TheFirstMrsDV · 03/10/2017 20:34

I admit to buying a bright pink cotton dress/long top on impulse in H&M yesterday.
It has balloon type long cuffs but it looks nice. I wore it today and it didn't annoy me or get in the way. I have avoided the weird sleeve thing apart from this one item.

ShoutyMcShoutFace · 03/10/2017 20:41

Yes yes yes you’re so right. Could find not one simple top or dress today that didn’t have foofy floaty extras on the shoulders, or baggy sleeves or bits cut out. So annoying when it’s gone cold now but there are no actual normal warm clothes. Thank you for mentioning the men’s section, I’m going to give that a try.

FloofyDoof · 03/10/2017 20:54

I hate fussy clothing. I'm a short fat bird and all the plus size clothing is either awful nylon shit with flowers or butterflies on it, cold shoulders, ruffles or ridiculously bright colours.

Not plus size daughter, who is similarly unimpressed with clothing shops at the moment bought some lovely long sleeved t-shirts in nice colours and a really nice chenille jumper, in a normal jumper shape from Asda the other day.

TheFirstMrsDV · 03/10/2017 20:55

Peak froof

FloofyDoof · 03/10/2017 20:57

That is clearly made from the curtains of a cheap B and B.

Ellie56 · 03/10/2017 20:59

GAP have some normal stuff among the ruffles and other crap.

Cessj · 03/10/2017 21:00

YANBU - the cold shoulder trend just leaves me cold....I just don't get it...and as for all the ruffles and bell sleeves and the lurid horrible colours...the only good thing about it (according to DH is that we're saving a LOT of money)...
