With no sn should be able to put on a pair of trainers? not expected to do laces, simply just put on. Was 3 in March.

I’d think so. My eldest is 2 and 90% of the time will insist he has to put his own shoes on.

topicOfTheDay · 03/10/2017 15:18

Yes.

x2boys · 03/10/2017 15:20

Should do my seven yr old who has severe autism and learning disabilities could do this at three sometimes on the wrong feet but he generelly manage it.

Starwhisperer · 03/10/2017 15:20

Well yes but they must've been given the opportunity. My son was a bit late at this but only because I'd been happy putting his shoes on for him.

sharksDen · 03/10/2017 15:22

x2boys

Did you even read the OP?

Yes, typical 3-year olds should manage this.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 15:23

Is it your 3 yo or someone else's? I'm always amazed that people definitely know when small children do or do not have SN. Since it takes a lot to get them diagnosed and lots of parents wouldn't know at 3.

SandSnakeofDorne · 03/10/2017 15:24

It can be harder if they have something like hypermobility, which you may not have picked up on otherwise. It took my DS quite a while to be able to do this stuff, we had to get shoes that were very very easy to get on and off. He couldn't do zips or buttons until 5.

LilQueenie · 03/10/2017 15:25

yes provided they are not the type of fit that make it a little difficult in the first place. Is it possible the child has wide feet that need a different trainer to fit better. DD has feet that are difficult to get in hers sometimes if the normal fitting style. That and wearing thick socks make a difference.

Katescurios · 03/10/2017 15:27

Yes bit wouldn't expect them to get them on the right feet every time

newmumwithquestions · 03/10/2017 15:30

Yes should be able to.
But may decide they don't want to comply and do it if asked to.

Fromage · 03/10/2017 15:30

Depends.

Some shoes are trickier to put on than others. Some trainers are stiff and you really have to pull out the tongue and hold it open, others are more like slippers. And on some, the tongue slips down and make it difficult to put on.

But if none of the above/similar apply, then yes, most 3yos could put on a pair of shoes.

SmileEachDay · 03/10/2017 15:32

Can? Yes.

Will? Different matter.

Hopelass · 03/10/2017 15:32

Yes should be able to but doesn't necessarily want to! My nearly four year old can but rarely wants to 🙄

SmileEachDay · 03/10/2017 15:33

X post Hope. I have one of those too Grin

Polter · 03/10/2017 15:35

A lot of disabilities aren't diagnosed by 3yo.

My ds couldn't do it at 3, didn't get any diagnoses until 6.

x2boys · 03/10/2017 15:35

Yes i did Sharks i said they should be able to as my severly autistic child could at that age Hmm

Desperad0 · 03/10/2017 15:37

I think if they have laces and/or are quite tight then no.

DS (nearly 4) can easily do wide Velcro, but not high tops or lace ups unless I undo all the laces

Quartz2208 · 03/10/2017 15:40

certainly plimsolls some trainers can be hard to put on!

eyebrowsonfleek · 03/10/2017 15:41

New shoes can be very hard to put on (stuff) but yes, most 3 year olds can put their own trainers on (although they might not do it in order to be awkward)

BellyBean · 03/10/2017 15:42

DD is great at sandals but struggles with trainers as the heel part digs in and needs to be pulled out again. She can though. Was 3 in march.

Ecureuil · 03/10/2017 15:44

Well my 2.3 year old puts her own shoes on, so yes I’d say so, generally.
A lot of SN aren’t diagnosed at 3 though. Plus all kids are different!

HostaFireAndIce · 03/10/2017 15:48

I got what you meant, x2boys - not sure why you got that snippy response!

catkind · 03/10/2017 15:51

Dexterity varies hugely at that age - so probably? But there'll always be some that can't. Preschools are generally working on skills like this with the aim of making sure they all can by the time they start school. But there are still some needing help in Reception.

mindutopia · 03/10/2017 15:55

I would say yes, can do, but will do without a fuss is another thing. Some days they will, some days they scream about it. But technically can do? Yes.

Cheby · 03/10/2017 16:00

Yes
