To perform an auto-tonsillectomy ???

QueenNefertitty · 02/10/2017 20:34

Got tonsillitis from DS, who's been suffering for a couple of weeks (he's just one, it's been rotten).

Went back to work at a new company post maternity leave today, and sure enough, that familiar scratchy scouring feeling began up by my inner ear/ tonsil.

It's probably bacterial (as his is) so will need to get some ABs at some point (when? When is there time?!) but am thinking far easier to just remove them myself with a melon baller or similar.

What do you think?

Actually in all seriousness I think I'm quite unwell. Can't get to a gp... would an online doctor be appropriate?

viques · 03/10/2017 16:35

Actually your highness, you should. My sister ended up with nephritis because of an untreated tonsil infection as an adult.

Centor criteria for treating tonsillitis, below. It's horrible, I remember feeling like my head was three times the size.

Queen, I'm seriously considering taking out my own molar right now, so I think it's a fabulous idea frankly.

Alternatively - out of hours GP? Private GP at station?

pasturesgreen · 03/10/2017 17:03

Sending huge sympathy, OP Flowers

I'm coming down with something similar right now, and it's rotten. Have been self-medicating with G&T.

QueenNefertitty · 03/10/2017 17:08

Fuck it. I know DS has had bacterial infection, he's nearly done his 10 days of penicillin V.

It's my first week back at work, and I'm already juggling DS illness with office hours- can't lose this job as single parent.

I'm going for a shady online jobby.

I WANT DRUGS ( and I know all
About AB resistance from a former life, so wouldn't be asking unless desperado and sure it's not "just a cold")

That's how DS was red flagging left right and centre for septic shock by the time anyone gave him the Orange Wonder

My daughter has suffered from bacterial tonsillitis for years. She used to have to have antibiotics a few times a year. Someone recommended that she gargle with 6% hydrogen peroxide solution when she feels the first signs that she is unwell, since then she hasn't had to have any antibiotics. You can buy it over the counter in Boots for a bargain £1.12.

MargoLovebutter · 03/10/2017 17:17

They bleed like slaughtered animals. Proper professional doctor person chopped mine out and I still had a flashing blue light hemorrhage afterwards.

Having suffered for two decades, I am a tonsillitis expert.

Are they covered in pus or spots of pus or are they just red and angry?

On a scale of 1-10 how shit do you feel? Feverish, achey or just like you are coming down with a really bad cold?

Have you taken as much paracetamol & ibuprofen as you are allowed?

Have you gargled with salt water?
Have you sucked on strepsils triple action until your tongue is permanently cherry coloured?

QueenNefertitty · 03/10/2017 17:24

@margo

Got shakes and hot and cold. No other symptoms except vicious inner inner ears and threat. And stomach ache.

Few white spots down the bottom but could be tonsil stones, I suppose.

Ibuprofen, paracetamol, mint tea, extra honey and not swallowing my saliva reduces pain for an hour or so- then it's back.

Feel like head afire. And eyes melting in the sockets. Thank god DS sleeping a lot today!

Chocolatear · 03/10/2017 17:26

I had mine taken out in my thirties. Had recurrent tonsillitis.
It was very painful but I felt so much better afterwards.

Twinkie1 · 03/10/2017 17:29

Get some peroxyl from the chemist and gargle with it at the first signs and it’ll be gone as quick as with antibiotics or even cheaper hydrogen peroxide from chemist and dilute 1:5 and you’ll be right as rain in s few days.

MargoLovebutter · 03/10/2017 17:35

Obviously, I can't give advise as I'm not a proper professional doctor person, but if you can get to the chemist, get some extra strong ibuprofen and paracetamol with codeine added to it. You'll have to ask behind the counter for them. Get the triple action strepsils too.

If taking just plain ibuprofen & paracetamol, I have double dosed for short periods of time, so I've taken a dose of both, but not over the recommended limit for either of them.

Drink gallons of liquid.

I would go to sleep as soon as your DS goes to sleep, dosed up with as much painkillers as you are allowed.

Go to GP!

MargoLovebutter · 03/10/2017 17:36

Advice!

QueenNefertitty · 03/10/2017 20:07

Thanks @margo for your v good advice

Looked down my throat this evening and saw pus all over my tonsils, so used online GP thingy and had an immediate appt. DF just out at pharmacy picking up my penicillin as I type.

Honestly, this has been bloody dreadful! Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Tonsillitis really is the pits. I hope you feel better soon Flowers

Dumbo412 · 03/10/2017 20:51

Call nhs 111- tell them you have been unable to get chance to see a dr during opening hours, they should be able to get you in to see an OOH DR.

Dumbo412 · 03/10/2017 20:52

Sorry I didn't read your last post before I posted!

MargoLovebutter · 04/10/2017 10:07

Hope you feel much better v soon.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 04/10/2017 10:14

OP In case the ABs don't work I have an excellent tool that would work.... Grin

Seriously though, the last time I had toothache, I was really, properly contemplating either punching myself in the face till it came out, or digging in the tool box for a pair of pliers.

Proper pain is fucking horrible.

To perform an auto-tonsillectomy ???
BarbarianMum · 04/10/2017 10:19

Durham am going to try that and if it works I may erect a small shrine to you!

Zaphodsotherhead · 04/10/2017 10:20

My DD has just suffered nearly a week of swollen throat/glands. She gets this about twice a year - I'm going to pass on the HO2 tip to her, she's sick of doctors telling her there's nothing they can do until she's so poorly she's bedbound!

TitsalinaBumSqoosh · 04/10/2017 11:20

Tonsils are little shits! I used to get tonsillitis about a million times a year until they lopped the buggers out.

DurhamDurham · 04/10/2017 17:59

Barbarianmum I hope it works, I'll await my shrine Grin

LakieLady · 04/10/2017 18:19

This thread has given me flashbacks to the 5 years of recurrent tonsillitis I suffered from the age of 9 until they whipped the fuckers out. It made me so ill that I was admitted to hospital twice with sepsis and/or nephritis.

It was utterly vile and made me feel totally crap, so you have my sympathies OP.

Sallystyle · 04/10/2017 18:25

I'll do it for you. It can't be that hard surely?

My son had it done as a little one as they were so huge he had sleep apnea and found it hard to eat so he had his done as an emergency. The next day at home he started bleeding from his nose and throat. Scared me shitless. Thankfully he didn't need to go back to theatre.
