In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

@GlitterBallSacks says the one whos username is Glitter Ball Sacks.

brasty · 02/10/2017 12:03

Know quite a few princesses, but hate it as a name. Also a L'Oreal.

whattobeexpected · 02/10/2017 12:04

I'm Another one who meant nevaeh 😂 I clearly need to get used to spelling backwards!

troodiedoo · 02/10/2017 12:06

I heard a man shouting "Rimmer" to his toddler son down town recently. Keep trying to think what I may have misheard but pretty sure that's what he said. Maybe he's a red dwarf fan.

Tainbri · 02/10/2017 12:07

All of Jamie Oliver's kids have horrific names IMO

squoosh · 02/10/2017 12:08

Rimmer. That's.......................bad. The first thing to do when choosing a name is to make sure it doesn't refer to any sexual acts! Grin

thegreylady · 02/10/2017 12:11

Laurence Olivier has/had a granddaughter named Isis. We bought a boat from her and her husband in the early 90s. I thought it was such a pretty name (the Thames in Oxford). Such a shame that it is spoiled now. When I was young Gay was common for girls but maybe not used much nowadays.

SloeSloeQuickQuickGin · 02/10/2017 12:11

There are no babies in Uk registered as La-a.

Very outting but I certainly work with a family who have multiple children, of either gender, who have names La'XYZ, every one of them, La'Toya, La'Tisha, etc (obvs not real names used in this post)

troodiedoo · 02/10/2017 12:14

@squoosh that's exactly what I said! Basic.

I used to live next door to a bj. Wasn't even short for anything.

ElsieMc · 02/10/2017 12:15

Personal hate of Elsie indeed! I have this username in celebration of my gloriously badly named nine aunts. Hello Winifred-Annie!

I had a colleague who worked as a teacher in Birmingham who swore a child in her class was called bicycle. Surely not.

As for film/tv names, I have rather a liking for Demelza and I suggested this to my (horrified) daughter during her last pregnancy.

notacooldad · 02/10/2017 12:15

When I worked in Lancashire a colleague had several kids. The first were by her ex and had everyday names. She then had some more with a new partner. Two were called Bubbles and Jumbles. It took a bit of getting used to but after a while it seemed perfectly normal

cakecakecheese · 02/10/2017 12:16

Vanilla

troodiedoo · 02/10/2017 12:16

@notacooldad were they a circus family?

KERALA1 · 02/10/2017 12:16

Elouise. Terrible name. Sounds like a hygiene product and whenever you say it it sounds whiney. For some reason popular here

brasty · 02/10/2017 12:18

How do you know there are no children with a certain name? Where is this information held?

sashh · 02/10/2017 12:20

Nooooooooooo... Stupid parents, don't they know that Khaleesi is a title, not a name?! Like Queen, Tsar, etc.

I have taught a Queen, as in someone with that name, and a Princess.

I saw a blog post where a mother had nearly called her child Andrew. A very normal name, nothing wrong with that, he was going to be known as 'Drew'.

Then she googled the name with their surname, Peacock.

It would have been about 3 years before the first Harry Potter was published, and I assume everyone she has met as an adult would think she was named after the books.

I knew a Lenore. She was about 2 when the fabric conditioner came out.

notacooldad · 02/10/2017 12:21

trood
No,not circus people!
They were very nice colleagues just went for bonkers names for some of their children. It was weird because the first one or two ( I can't remember now) was perfectly ordinary and then that!

WaxOnFeckOff · 02/10/2017 12:22

@brasty You could tell in Scotland becasue they publish data on every name used down to names where even 1 use of a name is published. They don't do that in E&W as far as I am aware, they only publish down to names of 3 uses or more. Maybe if you are registered wth some websites it might be possible to check? Im not sure if NI have their own records or not and what they do in terms of publishing.

DontOpenDeadInside · 02/10/2017 12:23

A family I know has 3 girls and a boy, I'll not put their real names but close.
Girls: Letisha, Tonisha, Mericka
Boy: John

There are no babies in Uk registered as La-a.

There is a L'a recorded in the UK birth records though (for the late 1990's I think).

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2017 12:25

Not RTFT so somebody may have raised this but...

is there an element of 'Performance Naming' in calling your child something, ahem, unusual, and then yelling it all over the supermarket/soft play/playground?

My kids have fairly unusual names, but they tend to go by nicknames (unless I am very very angry, which tends not to be in public and they are older now so...) so I'd be shouting 'Libbie! Don't do that!' or 'Bubs, come here sweetie!' not the full (unusual) name.

Are those who are shouting (f'ex) 'Walinda-Koala, come here!' really showing off their 'Performance Naming'? Because at home the child is known as 'Wally-K', but that won't turn any heads at soft play, will it?

TeachesOfPeaches · 02/10/2017 12:25

On Linkedin I seen a woman called Koriand'r. Looks like it's pronounced the same as Coriander Confused

sillyrubberduck · 02/10/2017 12:25

Timotei si Romanian for Timothy !

jaseyraex · 02/10/2017 12:26

WaxOnFeckOff absolutely did not know that, thank you Grin still sounds strange to me though.

JufusMum · 02/10/2017 12:26
