In the super market today and heard a mum shout "beige" to her daughter...no joke! At first I thought I had misheard Paige...but no, definitely beige.

Got me thinking... what are the worst names you have come across?

Dustbunny....of course not, I've posted earlier up with a list of those I dislike, Virginia was an add on!!!!

Redredredrose · 02/10/2017 21:03

Dd2 has just made friends with a Bo. I'm not sure yet if it's spelled like Bo derek or like Beau - I love it though and she's a lovely kid

There's a Bo on our Close - she's a lovely girl too. Wonder if it's the same girl? She's just started high school this September...

AntiHop · 02/10/2017 21:13

My personal bug bear is naming the child a short version instead of the full name. For example Beth instead of Elizabeth. Kate instead of Katherine. Why not officially use the full name, but use the short version day to day? Then the person can chose either.

My sister was working at GP's in Leeds a her or two ago and one of the new born babies was called Osama-Bin Hmm

The worst I've ever seen was Jizabelle. I just can't see why anyone would want a name that sounds like both Jiz and Jezebel

GeillisTheWitch · 02/10/2017 21:42

Jizabelle Shock.

If that's for real those parents should be bloody shot.

NiceCuppaTeaAndASitDown · 02/10/2017 21:59

I honestly though I'd misheard Isabelle, but no. Definitely Jizabelle! (Or possibly Jisabelle but that's not any better)

shouldaknownbetter · 02/10/2017 22:01

missionitspossible I knew a Donald McDonald !

mygorgeousmilo · 02/10/2017 22:05

Was at a children's centre once and asked a lady what her twins were called - "Saddam and Hussein"
Obviously I get that they are perfectly ordinary Middle eastern names, but both together made me go Confused ohhh right.

Oh and there was a baby at Gymboree called Lolita! Made me cringe!

I'm originally Spanish. The worst name ever is Angustias (Nausea). My best friend's granny was baptised Maria de las Angustias y del Pilar (Mary of the Nausea and the Pillar) but she was known as Angus...

Other names of this style...
Desamparados - Helpless
Amparo - Refuge / Shelter
Remedios - Remedies
Regla - Period. Yes, as in your monthly...
Encarnación - Incarnation
Peligros - Dangers
...

All of them are Titles of Mary. Some of them are unusual and nice, but the ones above...

I did not use any of the "nice" ones for my daughters because they sound sound odd with our surname (Scottish) but I like (and in Spain I would have used) Valme, Luz, Vega, Valle, Gádor or even Begoña.

Mercedes is pretty common, nicknames are Merce, Merche, Mer, Mery, etc. Very popular since the 1880s, after the romantically tragic Queen Mercedes, who passed away when she was just 18 years old.

The cars are named after the brand founder's daughter, Mercedes Jellinek.

Chardonnay

Ilikesweetpeas · 02/10/2017 22:15

Friends son is Wesley, I really don't like it!

dragonwarrior · 02/10/2017 22:16

Roehampton

Ithastobeheinz · 02/10/2017 22:19

my son went to school with a boy whose name is Fox

Not sure if you mean my post, which mentions both Precious and Mercedes. If so, your skim reading failed to pick up that I actually stated that these were both perfectly reasonable names in other cultures - so actually in line with your point of view.
And "possibly not racist" is not an apology for failing to read the post, nor is putting a smiley face after calling a stranger a bitch Grin Grin.

saoirse31 · 02/10/2017 22:53

Haven't met any younger than 40 but Attracta...

From current names I really dislike James, boring and unimaginative

SharkiraSharkira · 02/10/2017 22:57

Chel.C (pronounced Chelsea) - not a bad name in itself but the 'alternative' spelling is awful!

Also Dollce (Doll-see) because apparently she looked like a doll. Because obviously your tiny newborn will never grow up Hmm

I did also know an Axel, which I actually quite like as a name but then I found out he was not named after the singer which kind of put me off. A bit like calling your child Clutch or Gearbox.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/10/2017 22:58

James is hardly "current" it's been in constant usage for hundreds of years!

I really like the name James in theory but in practice the majority of adult James' I've come across have been...somewhat wanting. Which is off putting.

I detest the name Lexie as a given name. Cute as a nickname for Alexandra butnotherwise no. Especially when spelled Lexii.

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/10/2017 22:59

Dulcie is one of the worst names I have ever come across but is apparently quite popular in some parts of London?

saoirse31 · 02/10/2017 23:00

i know re James, just meant its still used currently....though why??

fuckingroundabout · 02/10/2017 23:02

I have a Chelsea but I hate it when it is spelt stupidly

Alisvolatpropiis · 02/10/2017 23:06

saoirse

I think it's one of those names, like Adam, Thomas which never really fall out of usage so hase become ageless and classless. Which is difficult to achieve and so appealing in its own way.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 02/10/2017 23:13

My DS used to go to nursery with a little girl called Pebbles which is the worst I've come across. And I know a little Lolita whose nickname is Lolly. Not sure which is worse, the name or the nickname.

brasty · 02/10/2017 23:18

I think there are a lot of names that some people like and others don't. So what.
But there are some that are cruel. I would put BJ into that category. BeeJay actually sounds quite nice as a name, but you don't name a child after a sex act.
