I concur. Drives me absolutely fucking bananas. My DC can't say aitch properly, despite years of bullying on my part.

FlakeBook · 01/10/2017 21:55

I was taught aitch.

But an Irish friend saus both aitch and haitch are valid.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 01/10/2017 21:57

Flake your friend is wrong, it's aitch.

goblinhob · 01/10/2017 21:57

Agreed

Dixiebell · 01/10/2017 21:58

It's aitch.

Prictoriafeckam · 01/10/2017 21:59

It's true, Irish people say haitch.

SolemnlyFarts · 01/10/2017 21:59

It's haitch in Ireland - your friend is not wrong.

Moanyoldcow · 01/10/2017 21:59

I've been fighting this battle since primary school. And now I hear it all over the fucking place. I detest it.

YADNBU.

SquareWord · 01/10/2017 22:00

Drives me mad! DD tells me I say it wrong as all her teachers say haitch and she won't be persuaded otherwise.

Minstrelsareyum · 01/10/2017 22:02

Both my DC said ‘haitch’ for ages during junior school and said their respective teachers said it like this in class and that I was wrong! It has carried on into senior school. Drives me nuts.

TwitterQueen1 · 01/10/2017 22:02

I don't care what Irish people in Ireland say. If it's haitch then that's great.

I'm not in Ireland and I'm not Irish so therefore it's aitch for me.

Blankscreen · 01/10/2017 22:03

It's aitch.

Haitch makes my teeth itch.

CamperVamp · 01/10/2017 22:04

My grandmother (born Sheffield, lived Lancs) said Haitch.

My DC say Haitch, courtesy of the Jamaican influence in South London Patois.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/10/2017 22:05

I say haitch. Aitch sounds weird to me. My name begins with H so I say it however I like Grin language changes. Pronunciations change.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 01/10/2017 22:06

I looked up the letter h in very big Oxford dictionary so that I could show the phonetic pronunciation/spelling to my dd when she was 6. It was useful to be able to show her that teachers are not infallible. Haitch is intolerable.

Rachie1973 · 01/10/2017 22:06

I agree..... also aks me a question rather than 'ask'. My daughter has a teacher that says it! It infuriates me. Oh and whilst I'm on a role people who say AND spell disgusting as 'discusting'

IMissSmashHits · 01/10/2017 22:06

It can be aitch or Haitch in Ireland. I had a boyfriend at school who wouldn't bring me to his parent's house when his grandmother was there because I pronounced H and several other words in a manner which would giveaway which religious backgrounds I come from.

Rinceoir · 01/10/2017 22:06

It’s haitch in Ireland. This comes up here all the time. It’s a letter sound, you can understand both, how does it irritate people so much?!

R in Ireland is more like orr. Every time I have to spell something here I need to carefully remind myself that it’s arr like a pirate...

SilverySurfer · 01/10/2017 22:06

Totally agree, haitch is bloody awful.

Rachie1973 · 01/10/2017 22:07

or roll even. Wake up Rach lol

AfterSchoolWorry · 01/10/2017 22:10

I say haitch. Irish. Aitch sounds cockney to me.

Also it makes sense that the word haitch starts with the letter haitch. Yes.

I also say 'can I get a blt sandwich'. That's not rude in Ireland Grin

runs quickly out of thread

Class marker. This is an opportunity for people to demonstrate that they are very classy indeed and not peasants, like, for example, we Irish.

Zucker · 01/10/2017 22:11

yes YABU

DramaAlpaca · 01/10/2017 22:11

I'm English & say 'aitch' but live in Ireland where it's 'haitch'. So I've not only had to get used to my DC saying haitch, but also put up with them correcting me when I say aitch.
