To not accept an invitation to dinner because of what's growing underneath my friend's acrylics?

I cannot bear the sight of natural nails underneath false ones. They're brown, look dirty and must be harbouring all sorts of germs.

Can anyone explain why people spend £££s on acrylics, when they look completely foul from the palm side up.

Is it because she doesn't have them 'done' often enough?

Yuk! Sounds like she doesn't wash her hands properly. I wouldn't want to eat food she'd prepared either.

AVirtuousLife · 01/10/2017 17:15

I often wonder about this.

Surely you'd have to be scrubbing your overhanging acrylic nails with a nail brush at least twice a day to avoid build up of muck etc??

PinkHeart5913 · 01/10/2017 17:16

Ewwww, I’ll be honest I’d probably turn down a meal cooked by her too

VioletCharlotte · 01/10/2017 17:17

I don't like them either. I had them done years ago and was forever scrubbing underneath them to get the dirt out. God knows what lurks down there Shock

AVirtuousLife · 01/10/2017 17:22

I keep my nails quite short and even then they can get rubbish along the edge so I have to scrub them.

I also don't understand how people type or hold implements properly with them Confused

Queenofthedrivensnow · 01/10/2017 17:24

Yanbu they make me feel a bit sick. What's with the wandering around wit a few missing for ages too

BusterGonad · 01/10/2017 17:25

I love all things beauty but fake nails make me feel sick! Envy

BucksFrizz · 01/10/2017 17:25

I've noticed it on other people too - the underside of the acrylic seems to be clean, but the natural nail is revolting!

EchidnasPhone · 01/10/2017 17:26

Even without acrylic extensions your nails get dirty & should be scrubbed. If she's a fake tan fan it's notorious for staining the underside of your nails. I have long nails & they take a lot of maintenance to keep looking good so keeping them clean is a must. Does she appear like she doesn't wash her hands?

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/10/2017 17:27

Excuse me I'm going to be sick Envy.

pleasemindthegap · 01/10/2017 17:28

I hate long nails..natural or acrylic ! Ugh !

Roomba · 01/10/2017 17:40

Oh thanks OP! I'm going to sit down to a meal made by a relative shortly, including baking she's had her hands in.She has those acrylic nails! It's all I'm going to be thinking about throughout the whole meal now. Urgh Envy

BucksFrizz · 01/10/2017 17:54

I actually have two friends with horrible undergrowth, one uses fake tan but the other doesn't. Their nails are equally horrid!

Also, I can't imagine how anyone would think their nails are hygienic with acrylics.

OP posts:
NameChangeFamousFolk · 01/10/2017 18:04

I really don't like the look of them at all, and the hygiene side puts me off even more. Fake nails are an odd thing to me - they just look really...fake.

A friend has a 'French manicure' style fake nail, for a 'natural' look. It looks completely unnatural! I love a nicely rounded/squared off, short nail with polish - looks so chic.

HappyAxolotl · 01/10/2017 18:06

I have long acrylics. Every time I wash my hands I use a nail brush or if there isn't one available I make sure to work the suds in under each nail. Same with the hand sanitiser, I get it in under the nails too. I spend time and money on making my nails look good - I'm not going to let them become muck traps!

It's those who wave their hands under a tap after using the loo as opposed to washing them that we need to watch out for and they don't even look dirty.

Rheged · 01/10/2017 18:07

I've had acrylic nails in the past. You need to make sure you scrub underneath them with a nail brush several times a day. Otherwise they get really dirty. But I did clean them regularly so they were clean/hygienic.

EchidnasPhone · 01/10/2017 18:12

I think it's like all hand hygiene you have to be thorough. I scrub my nails & encourage my children to also. The muck they get under their nails can be horrible. I don't know if someone with false nails cooking would put me off eating at their house but I'd think twice about people who have cats

EsmeWeatherwax · 01/10/2017 18:12

I’ve had acrylic nails for the past year or so, they’re off now, but yes, you do have to work incredibly hard at keeping the underside of them clean. Putting on moisturiser from a jar is hellish with them on too. I’m quite enjoying the freedom of my short, natural nails, not that my acrylics were hugely long.

BucksFrizz · 01/10/2017 18:25

Echidnas why would you think that cat owners carry more germs than people with acrylic nails?

OP posts:
EchidnasPhone · 01/10/2017 18:51

Not the owners as such it's the idea of cats on work tops & on tables. Gives me the shivers to think of animals near food prep.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 02/10/2017 20:56

Sad So my acrylics are ugly, disgusting and my nails are brown, filthy and disgusting underneath them?? Noooooooooooooo! I luffs my acrylics and my nails are fine underneath! I'm going to post a picture in a minute to proooove it

YokoReturns · 02/10/2017 21:02

I can’t even stand having polish on my nails - they feel like they’re in prison and I have to bite it all off after 10 minutes weirdo

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 02/10/2017 21:03

See? Bootiful. And clean. Grin

Vadams90 · 03/10/2017 07:53

I’m so confused. I regularly get acrylic nail extensions and my nails are NEVER dirty. When you have them done you adjust your hand movements and how you interact with wet substances surely? The worst thing about them is the damage to your natural nails; if someone has dirt building up under their nails then that’s due to their poor hygiene in general

swampytiggaa · 03/10/2017 07:58

I’ve just been staring at my nails worried that they looked horrible - they don’t. I don’t actually have extensions- I have a thin layer of acrylic over my natural nails to strengthen them then polish on top. I keep them pretty short. I love them actually 🙂
