Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

pagwatch I think that's the Kelly's hoppen bathroom you have posted Grin it's nice but I could do so much more to that space. It's dull and muted. I wonder if that'd from Kelly's home, or in her home perhaps she goes berserk for color.

MrsOverTheRoad · 02/10/2017 03:27

Biscuits the trouble is, if you paint your fence an actual colour...like bright blue or lilac, it ages very fast and plants look best against a natural colour.

Pagwatch · 02/10/2017 06:21
Grin

Bornfree.
That would be my dull and muted bathroom.

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/10/2017 07:34

My fence is pink, blue and yellow. Its held up really well because I didn't use fence paint. I like the way it brightens the garden when there are no flowers.

TheFirstMrsDV · 02/10/2017 07:37

I don't understand sea side themed bathrooms.
I have just seen another one. A tiny downstairs loo all done out with lighthouses and shells.
The water in the toilet doesn't make me think 'oooh sea side'.

hannah1992 · 02/10/2017 07:49

I hate crushed velvet. It's awful. I don't mind grey paint but depends where it's used and what tone of grey it is. I don't mind the wall plaques but it depends what they say. My mum bought me one last Xmas that was quite nice and it says "as far as tone else knows we are a nice normal family" which I found quite funny but it fits. My nan bought me one last year that she found in a charity shop it's small and it says "my house was tidy last week sorry you missed it 🤣" which again is very fitting! I've seen others that are quite funny. My neighbour has a large dog on her gate she has a sign saying beware of the dog children which I thinks funny.

Once stuff starts appearing in argos you know it's passe

Uptheduffy · 02/10/2017 08:13

I can’t afford it until it appears in Argos though.

ShirleyPhallus · 02/10/2017 08:56

Are batteries passé then? Light bulbs?

I love your bathroom. It's beautiful

Easilyflattered · 02/10/2017 09:29

After a weekends house viewing I have decided the only thing I really can't tolerate are black gloss kitchens, and wall paper with big bright flowers the size of dinner plates.

And dirty, grubby houses which are apparently clean enough to show people round.

surferjet · 02/10/2017 10:01

Thing is, where do people on average incomes buy their stuff?
Ikea & Argos are great if you’re on a limited budget, so this thread is a bit snobby.
Most of us can’t afford John Lewis, or to buy our art work from galleries. & yes, you can do a Sarah Beeny & spend your life looking through skips for ‘interesting’ furniture - but who has the time?
Personally, as long as a house is clean I don’t really notice much. although I’m not into too much clutter. ( Plus I really don’t like toilets in bathrooms )

PickAChew · 02/10/2017 11:46

Lots of IKEA, selected John Lewis, Laura Ashley, Markses, Next, our dining table and chairs were £60 off gumtree. The boys have a lovely rug in their room from The Range.

Zaphodsotherhead · 02/10/2017 11:55

surferjet I am really quite poor (think annual income in single figures) and I buy my stuff at The Range.

I love a bit of twiggy, pebbly tat myself. And grey.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 02/10/2017 14:16

I don't do trendy. I never have.
I do what I like, within the restrictions set by the current "trends" - for e.g. a while ago I needed a new TV, and wanted a black sony - couldn't get one, they were all bastard silver/brushed aluminium look! WHY? Why not offer the choice? Not like I wanted a cherry red one!

Anyway.

I like velvet furnishings, but not crushed velvet - I used to have red velvet curtains, both antique and new - the antique ones used to be my grandmother's.

I don't like grey as a furnishing colour. I don't like magnolia either. I have quite strong colours on my walls (hey guess what, I don't like neutrals at all!) and I refuse to change them until they're looking REALLY tatty.

I don't like limewashed stuff, I don't like furniture that should be wood varnish/stain being painted. I'm a big fan of dark wood furniture and have a lot of "family" furniture that fits that bill. I REALLY don't like furniture that has been "upcycled" using silver paint

Other people would probably call my "style" (I use the word very loosely!) old-fashioned - but it's what I like so I don't care. I'm the one who has to live here, not anyone else, and no one else HAS to like it - they don't see it every day like I do.

KichenDancefloor · 02/10/2017 15:01

A lot of what people find tasteful depends on what you grew up with and whether it's nicely familiar or something to rebel against.

I'll never be a fan of the three piece suite, clashing floral/swirly patterns on every surface, ornaments or pine cladding as it reminds me of being embarrassed by my 70s decor when my friends had 80s houses with (then contemporary) stencils, dado rails and mega stereo units in glass cabinets.

And if it ever comes back into fashion I won't be rushing out to buy the late 90s/00s drab commercial look that my DH was so fond of when we first got together. He honestly sees no difference in plasticky beech-effect furniture and solid wood. And don't get me started on the vertical blinds, ceiling fans and metal look 'accents'. He'd be right at home in Wernham Hogg!

I quite like lots of the contemporary interior design from twee and chintzy to (our house) more minimal. The only thing that makes my teeth itch is EVERYTHING matchy-matchy from the same shop. I'd go for naff over soulless any day.

GoGoGazelle · 02/10/2017 15:34

I love that house ^^ but would probably reduce/remove some of the grey.

WritingHome · 02/10/2017 15:39

That house is so dull and devoid of any personality or style. It pretty much sums up my thoughts on what I hate about current home trends.

GoGoGazelle · 02/10/2017 15:39

Our furniture is 90% Ikea, but then I try to mix it up with loads of plants and more original artwork (we're not talking Matisse, just prints from etsy or small galleries) and accessories (vintage china, poncy candles and, er, aldi lamps).

blubberball · 02/10/2017 15:52

I love my mum and dad's house the best. It reminds me of the Weasley's burrow. There's knitting and craft stuff every where, cushions, throws, family photos, a real fire place and cats and dogs. It's never going to be trendy, but it's always so cosy and welcoming. I love it.

anythingbuttypical · 02/10/2017 15:54

I'm far too OCD to have anything even slightly resembling crushed velvet in my house! I'd be constantly brushing it into a neat orderly direction Grin

Plantation shutters = dark and remind me of a prison not that I've ever been in one

Black kitchens = why!? It makes the room look darker and smaller than it is and shows up every single mark/finger print.

Where I have to disagree with alot of you is Grey walls. We are in the process of painting our currently magnolia hallway, stairs, landing, living room and our bedroom grey, a very light grey, almost white, but yea still grey the rest of the rooms are already white. None of the furniture is Grey though. Too much would be a bit overbearing.

Trills · 02/10/2017 15:57

Are we supposed to like or dislike that linked house?

Nothing in it is particularly lovely or particularly offensive.

The sofas are very far away from each other - not very cosy or chatty.

I don't believe that anyone ever sits at a breakfast bar - they are just places to dump stuff - but that's just "not to my taste" rather than something I could claim to HATE.

Lucisky · 02/10/2017 16:02

gunteer, that house is rather lovely I think; yes, far too much grey, especially the sofas, but easily changed to inject a bit more life into it. It comes over a bit like a show house atm.

wellyclad · 02/10/2017 16:10

I love grey!
I hate high gloss kitchens, tacky quote signs, that horrible wallpaper with oversized swirly flowers on that people have as a “feature” wall, anything diamante, crushed velvet... the list goes on
