Crushed velvet sofas/beds/curtains.

Also wooden letters in the kitchen/bathroom that's say 'Cook'/'Bath' etc telling you what each room is for.

While I'm at it- wall 'art' (stickers) with cheesy phrases.

I haven't read through the whole thread, but what if you sat on a velvet sofa wearing a velvet dress? Or attempted to lay down? It's just all kinds of wrong. I'd imagine it would be like male and female velcro

fairyofallthings · 01/10/2017 16:56

noonoo we have that colour paint in our bathroom.

Mustang27 · 01/10/2017 17:00

Broom I love your fire

Queenofthedrivensnow · 01/10/2017 17:02

Ha exh has shutters. He's always been gauche though.

Live laugh laugh stickers are well chav now.

Really I don't care much about decor in other people's houses especially if it's all matchy. I much prefer random and cosy and junk Grin

PickAChew · 01/10/2017 17:05

Plenty of not poor people live in small houses, too. Probably 80% of the houses for sale on Rightmove are under 1000 sq ft. You're getting up to a niche tiny percentage of properties - usually very expensive or, if not, old and unusual - that have rooms big enough to have sofas in the middle, rather than against a wall. We have a big corner sofa in our 11'6 by 13' livingroom and while house hunting saw many livingrooms that it wouldn't even fit in. Also saw plenty of master bedrooms that we'd struggle to get a kingsize bed into, which actually bothers me more than the sofa, because the sofa's knackered, anyhow, but I need the space offered by a bigger than double bed, as I sleep flat on my back and hate being touched when I'm sleeping.

I still fecking detest grey decor, mirror furniture, garish feature walls (tonal/textured ones can be nice, though) and shiny black leather and clattery laminate flooring.

Bluntness100 · 01/10/2017 17:08

Broom, yours is lovely, saved by the actual fire in the fire place...and not a bunch of logs or a fake flame thing!

BroomHandledMouser · 01/10/2017 17:09

@Bluntness100 😀

allegretto · 01/10/2017 17:10

We have a velvet armchair but it has been hidden under a throw for the last twenty years or so. Didn't realise it was back in fashion, thanks OP! Grin

twattymctwatterson · 01/10/2017 17:19

The thing about these threads isn't that people are slagging off other people's taste. It's that it's inevitable that arseholes will appear sneering about how xyz is "common". There's nothing more illbred than classism.

mygorgeousmilo · 01/10/2017 17:49

I have a little graveyard of bossy words on plaques/bits of wood/glass/framed, that relatives have bought for me over the years. They live together in a pile at the bottom of a cupboard, telling themselves what to do. Can't face chucking them out as they were all given by kindly older family members.... but yeah. Those.

Tinycitrus · 01/10/2017 17:51

I am very common. We have vintage third hand brown dralon sofas and a beautiful collection of rickety charity shop curated vintage furniture.

No pebbly shit, letters or anything. We do have a fifth hand gorgeous blue Wilton rug with little birds on it Which keeps me happy among the charity shop tat. Smile

Bornfreebutinbiscuits · 01/10/2017 17:51

I don't think it is a poor thing two houses in my mind one is very large mcmansion large canvas everywhere, fam in white shirts and jeans, bare foot. Loads of crushed grey sofas, sparkling mirrors.. Oak wood. The leather dining room chairs not one item i like. The other is smaller terraced, grey, inside the pebble, pine, huge waffle sofa taking up entire room. Etc. Grey carpets.

Charolais · 01/10/2017 17:52

I hate open floor plans and houses built around garages.

We live in the U.S. and my son is about to have a house built and we’ve been going around with him looking at new houses for floor plan ideas. I was wondering what the deal was with the grey everywhere. It is just awful. Several houses had grey carpets and grey walls. One house had a warmish grey carpet and a cooler grey wall colour and it was hideous. They topped off the look with black kitchen cabinets!!

One house, which I think was a hold-over from the 1990’s, was a single story 2800sq foot open plan. Most of the house was this large open area, which we couldn't figure out what a person would do or put there - indoor sporting events maybe. The bedrooms were regular size with very small closets and connected to the master bedroom was this huge bathroom with no door, except for around the toilet itself. I could imagine trying to sleep with husband splashing about.

The house we sat down for a chat in, because we felt comfortable, had oak cabinets, warm colors etc, not a touch of grey, but the walk-in pantry had the words PANTRY over the door, so people would mistake it with the crapper I suppose.

WheresMyTaco · 01/10/2017 18:01

At risk of sounding like a total snob, I think all the things mentioned are a bit common. Taste is generally pretty classed.

That is perhaps the most ridiculous thing I have ever read on this website and I once saw someone claim they would never make fish fingers with fish that they didn't get themselves directly from the boat.

Your opinion is the same as saying everyone else has an accent. The middle classes get to decide what is tasteful and anything deviating from that is a tacky commoner. It's just a such stupid thing to say.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 01/10/2017 18:09

Fan in white shirts and jeans and bare foot - please tell me that's really I'm dying!

RhiWrites · 01/10/2017 18:13

I have cushions all over my bed and a purple velvet throw my mum made for my 18th birthday. It's not supposed to be crushed but it isn't ironed!

Oh and my walls are grey. 😂

Pagwatch · 01/10/2017 18:17

The one I don't understand is hanging things like hearts from door handles.
They clank. It's annoying.
My DD has one on her door handle. It saves me having to head down the hall to check she's up because I can hear it clanking away when she goes to the bathroom.

ShotsFired · 01/10/2017 18:18

@AgainPlease Aw sad but I love my crushed velvet headboard, cushions, and chaise lounge

@RhiWrites Sun I have cushions all over my bed

What do you do with all those things every night?!
I can't imagine the sheer bloody faff of taking 16 dozen extra non-sleeping pillows off a bed, only to put them back on again the next day.

ShotsFired · 01/10/2017 18:19

Two words: Frog Tape.

TheFirstMrsDV · 01/10/2017 18:19

I agree with you there Pag
I like to follow DIY pages on FB but every chest of drawers, wardrobe, door and candlestick has a flipping heart hanging off it

TheFirstMrsDV · 01/10/2017 18:21

shots I have had to push my bed against the wall to give my wobbly husband a bit of room to move around.

I have tons of pillows and cushions on my bed and I snuggle into them like a bit pillowy nest.

Its bliss.

Maelstrop · 01/10/2017 18:27

Virginia Creeper is a lovely wall creeper. Have three.

Same. It wrapped round both semis. I had to pay the neighbour's son to tear it all down.

AmethystRaven · 01/10/2017 18:29

I'm about to paint some walls grey and I have chasing cars lyrics on my stairs. I also have some geek film art. Sounds like my house is very naff! I like it though, I prefer it to my friends house which is literally like a load of photos from the next catalogue.
(Very nice house but it's got no soul!)

What are the 'chasing cars lyrics', people keep talking about?
