To spend £150 on something I don't need but want very much?

MOIST · 01/10/2017 08:14

I need new underwear. I have £130 worth of pants and 2 bras in my shiopping basket. My current underwear is all a bit mingling and stretchy.

ANd then I found the most beautiful perfect thing i have been looking for for ever. Something I really really really want. I dont need it though. It's not practical, it doesn't do anything, but I want it.

So which should I buy?

Moist I am quite aggressively atheist

You sound proud of that which is odd considering it makes you sound quite the arsehole.

BusterGonad · 01/10/2017 20:02

Flanders 😂

I know that feeling. I am very thrifty by nature and have been all my life. But occasionally I have treated myself to high value things that I have really liked but totally not necessary. Because I have lived so thrifty and frugally despite a good income I feels totally right that I deserve a treat now and then. As I get progress into my 30s it feels right that I should reap the rewards of working hard, being thrifty and making smart decisions in my late teens and 20s.

As a rule of thumb I got by what my Grandma used to say, 'if you have the money and you want it by all means get it, if you haven't got the money you cant have it'.

WeirdAndPissedOff · 01/10/2017 21:00

I'm agnostic/atheist, dont really "get" nativities and wouldn't pay £150 for the onr OP saw.
But I can relate to seeing something "perfect" when skint - in my case I didn't get it, and when I had the money later I could never find it and have kicked myself a little over it, tbh.
If OP can afford it (even if it means a little cutting back elsewhere on non-necessities/cheaper necessities) and it will be worth it to her, then nothing else really matters does it? Especially with an item that may have a personal or faith-based meaning such as this one.

I'm glad you went for it, OP! I hope it brings you pleasure going forward. Wink

Oh no I don’t
Like
It ☹️

I have loads of tiny nativity sets. It’s my ‘thing’

Yes, it actually is quite aggressive to come onto to a Nativity thread and spread your ire, Niki.

Maybe pop over to Style and Beauty next to take the piss out of people's fashion choices; it's slightly less offensive.

AlternativeTentacle · 02/10/2017 10:34

It is not a 'nativity thread', it is a 'I want to spend £150 on some bizarre item' thread. And surely people are entitled to post on whatever thread they like?

1DAD2KIDS · 02/10/2017 12:14

I am atheist. Come from a Christian upbringing granted. But I am know there is no existence of a higher power or at least the chances are so negligibly small (so maybe I could argue technically agnostics as I have about 99.9% believe that god doesn't exist as its not 100% proved).

But I enjoy Christmas and a good nativity scene. It is an item of cultural importance to me as someone who celebrates the festivity with my family. I don't want to detach Christmas from its cultural origins. To slate someone for wanting a nice nativity because god doesn't exist is like slating someone who is into fantasy and mythology for having dragons on their mantelpiece.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 02/10/2017 16:34

I love my little Nativity set. The only sadness I have is that it only has the 3 kings, and no shepherds. I would like matching shepherds but have never found them :(
If I ever did find them, I would buy them - almost no matter the cost - so long as I could afford it.

Scarriff · 02/10/2017 17:42

Im for the Nativity and TK MAXX for cheaper pants. We still have the Nativity we bought for our first Chriatmas together.

Go to rigby and peller and get properly measured and spend £150 on underwear for you!

Doingmybestmum · 02/10/2017 17:52

Buy the underwear and maybe your partner will buy you the nativity set? Halo

pinkjjf27 · 02/10/2017 17:53

Its got to be the nativity set It will bring you pleasure for many years I love mine at Christmas But I thought I was odd.

canonlydoblue · 02/10/2017 17:54

Buy the nativity and go commando!

Katherine2626 · 02/10/2017 17:58

I would get the perfect thing. it will make you happy every day - knickers probably won't.

LuckLuckLUCK · 02/10/2017 18:03

She's already bought it!!!

And why anybody would post to say that they don't like it, I am just agog at how unnecessarily rude some people are!

Everhopeful1 · 02/10/2017 18:03

I hope you bought everything, after a life of thriftiness these nice things are your reward - enjoy!

maxrayeseth123 · 02/10/2017 18:08

Oh defo the nativity set, why not?! You could always go 'commando' and give your man a thrill!!

Crimblewick · 02/10/2017 18:11

If it's something you've wanted for so long and you know you will treasure it, and it's a one-off which you will love every year as your own piece of tradition, buy it

Yeah, I would. Sometimes you just know.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/10/2017 18:12

It will make you happy everyday ..Well, everyday in December at least. It's a Christmas Nativity set so OP won't be getting much of a thrill from it in June. Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/10/2017 18:34

The THING! Buy the THING!!!!

Things are BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!!!

Aridane · 02/10/2017 18:38

Why would you waste your money on an expensive carving of the product of a magical sky god who impregnated a poor peasant girl?

Do fuck off Niki

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 02/10/2017 18:41
