Cross-post with JoJo - clearly some of us don't have the positive associations with that place that the OP does!

viques · 27/09/2017 17:04

if you have a gherkin wedding you need to go the full hog, drink only from firkins , dress code jerkins (men)and merkins (women).

@Longdistance, tonight I am salting my piccalilli vegetables if you are interested.

Getting married in an office block?

I know. How totally shit.

Won't there be loads of office workers getting in the way of your photos, though?

On a Saturday, at night, inside an exclusively booked venue? Seems unlikely. Most central London weddings feature street photography of the couple which includes lots of random passersby, that's kind of what an urban wedding is all about.

It's an iconic piece of architecture and an absolutely stunning venue with amazing views. I don't see why it's any less "worthy" than a clichéd stately home.

I’d love to go to a gherkin themed wedding. How niche!
I’m thinking now about the menu. The DJ’s playlist. How Great Aunt Nell will take it. What the favours will be. This could be epic!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/09/2017 17:11

My friend went to a wedding there and heard on the grapevine that it was lots and lots of thousands. But then I guess its like anything in that you can have as much or as little as you want. This wedding was POSH, every luxury added extra you can think of. The favours for the women were silver individually engraved handbag mirrors for example and there were a lot of guests.

PigletJohn · 27/09/2017 17:12

it does have another nickname....

Katedotness1963 · 27/09/2017 17:12

No pickles in veils and top hats? Disappointing...

Leavingonajet · 27/09/2017 17:14

Sad at the lack of pickles 😢

FunkinEll · 27/09/2017 17:14

I was in a new building next to it a few weekends ago and the view was amazing (we were on the 26th floor) so I totally see the attraction. Can you have the reception there too?

The City of London is dead at the weekends so assuming you'll do it then, you won't have any office workers to worry about.

GherkinSnatch · 27/09/2017 17:14

There was thinking you all knew something I didn't Grin

TurnipCake · 27/09/2017 17:15

Ate there a couple of months ago, you're separated from the office workers fairly quickly once in the building, so they don't have to contend with diners not knowing where they're going or taking photos.

StigmaStyle · 27/09/2017 17:15

I was hoping someone was marrying two gherkins. Like sticking googly eyes on them and crocheting a little wedding dress and suit for them. Maybe a small broccoli floret for a bouquet.

Can't believe this isn't actually on the web already. Someone has to do it!

Did find this though

Why would anyone want to get married in commercial offices? Do they have an insurance/pickled cucumber fetish?

Confused
nowahousewife · 27/09/2017 17:16

Went to a 50th there a couple of years ago, fab venue, fab views. Tight security upon entry.

Why do you want to know?

StigmaStyle · 27/09/2017 17:16

Searcy's looks amazing, I had no idea the top of the gherkin was a huge hollow dome like that.

I want a gherkin wedding now, despite having sworn off marriage forever.

Kipi · 27/09/2017 17:17

Those pictures look amazing. I’m not sure you’d be feeling it on the lift up / in the foyer but it looks amazing once you’re up there. I’d totally be up for that.

TurnipCake · 27/09/2017 17:18

Why would anyone want to get married in commercial offices?

Different strokes for different gherkins

viques · 27/09/2017 17:18

@Flowerpot, no different to getting married in a barn , though with less animal shit.

Ellendegeneres · 27/09/2017 17:20

Hangry now. Want gherkins. Not even pregnant and I'm craving them ☹️

WorldofTofuness · 27/09/2017 17:20

(Also disappointed at the lack of cucurbit nuptials.)

My memory of the Gherkin is (literally) a damp squib. It was the only Open House time it was open. Went with DP, losing him on the way. He saw the queue, thought "fuck that", came back at crack of dawn the next day, queued for 30 mins and took photos of an amazing view in brilliant weather.

By contrast, I saw the queue, thought "better get queueing then", stood for over 5 hours, and got photos of cloudy drizzly murk.

Seems a lot of money to gamble on our climate...

thecatfromjapan · 27/09/2017 17:21

Yes. It was beautiful. Restaurant + upstairs for dancing and views.

There was no-one else there - I'm a bit Hmm at comments about mingling with office workers. Why would you be mingling with office workers?

The wedding was lovely. It was a beautiful day, filled with love and friendship, and two lovely people getting married.

Slimthistime · 27/09/2017 17:22

It's nice OP but one (possibly weird) thing worth mentioning ...the stairs and the lighting. I haven't been for a couple of years, but I found lighting to be so dim around the staircase that a lot of people have to take the steps really carefully. My mum is elderly and wears bifocals and they would have done her head in. It's hard to explain unless you see them.

also that's if you're going from top floor to next one down - you can probably use the lift but I just thought I'd mention in case of elderly guests etc.

Amazing views though. I find London really gets on my nerves now but if I got invited again I'd probably go there.

TurnipCake · 27/09/2017 17:22

Would the food supplier be Searcys?

Had a rather forgettable meal there when I went. It wasn't necessarily bad, but if they were providing wedding food I'd be very disappointed.
