To think we can't call our cat "William - known as Billy"?

Grin the kids seem to think it's a great name... Surely Billy is fine? Apparently we are going to register him as William at the vet Shock

So you would call it out loud 'William known as Billy?'
Or 'Billy'?

SootSprite · 27/09/2017 16:15

I used to have a dog, Benjamin, known as Ben. When we adopted him we were engaged so he was given my surname and then changed when we got married 😂

MrsGotobed · 27/09/2017 16:15

That's fine for a cat's name but then again I knew a cat called Alan

It's sweet that the children have named him and, let's face it, there's probably a lot worse names they could've come up with!!

eg. as a 3 yr old my DS would have called a kitten Mr PooPooHead

WrittenandGrown · 27/09/2017 16:16

Of course full name at the vets and on any other official paperwork. The kids will love it when he gets his full name called out for his appointment.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 27/09/2017 16:18

OK, now I think my first question was really stupid.
Clearly not actually called "William known as Billy"

Horses4 · 27/09/2017 16:21

I had a cat called Bob. He was great.

limitedperiodonly · 27/09/2017 16:28

They're being sensible giving him his full name. What if he wants to be a High Court judge when he grows up?

Aloethere · 27/09/2017 16:29

My cat is called Dave except when he has pissed me off then he is called David.

ratherhaveacupoftea · 27/09/2017 16:31

We have a cat called Dave,

Although our old cat was registered at the vets as Lord Fatboy Bigglesworth the 3rd as a joke that stuck (he was called Fatboy, cause he was a fat rescue cat) The receptionist would laugh when we booked him and announced his full title when it was his turn to go in. I miss the fat fur ball.

Glumglowworm · 27/09/2017 16:32

Of course you should! You need a middle name to so you can really go full name on him when he's naughty

WILLIAM HUMPHREY OG why did you bring a half dead bird into my bedroom?!

Dahlietta · 27/09/2017 16:34

I have a friend whose dog is called 'Motherfucker known as Moffett' Shock

NoncommittalToSparkleMotion · 27/09/2017 16:34

Absolutely you can. And should.

He needs to be taken seriously on his CV for job prospects.

EdmundCleverClogs · 27/09/2017 16:36

I'd be worried about a 'William known as Billy'. What if he grows into one of these difficult, pretentious types that insist on only answering to their full names? Calling out 'William' in the park could result in not only your dog turning up, but a couple of toddlers and a few elderly gentlemen. I hope you have room for them all at home...

Kitsandkids · 27/09/2017 16:36

My cat's called William. He sometimes gets Will. I think it suits him!

ineedamoreadultieradult · 27/09/2017 16:37

Our cat's full name is Ms Boudica Beatrix Surname. She gets this called out at the vets. At home she is Boo.

Bobbiepin · 27/09/2017 16:41

In all honesty I came here thinking you were an idiot (call your cat whatever you want, I think Billy is a great name) but the responses are gold.

ratherhaveacupoftea DH has promised me we can get a cat after baby is born. We are DEFINITELY naming it something awesome like that (the cat, not the baby).

BlueLagoons · 27/09/2017 16:42

My mum's cat is called William so I would say yes you can call him William Grin It's a great cat name.

HistoriaTrixie · 27/09/2017 16:42

I don't see why not; our giant Houndz 57 is Professor-Lewis-Binford-Benny. Grin He only uses the last one but the rest is there just for decoration!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 27/09/2017 16:44

Our dog is Princess Matilda Jane the Fifth....she is known as Tilly though.

At the vets she is just Tilly too.

But if she has been really really naughty, she gets fullnamed.

RhiannonOHara · 27/09/2017 16:46

They're being sensible giving him his full name. What if he wants to be a High Court judge when he grows up?

This exactly.

PandasRock · 27/09/2017 16:46

Your dc are absolutely right.

Pets have full names, to be used on all paperwork and official documents, and then shorter versions (pet names Wink) used everyday.

I had a cat called Clytemnestra on vet paperwork (Ness at home) - I was always asked what her full name was when registering, so I gave the full name. If they didn't want to know, they wouldn't ask, surely?

redsquirrel2 · 27/09/2017 16:47

Of course. Cats should always have proper names. We had cats called Bill and Ted in the 1990s but unfortunately they had a not very excellent adventure and Ted was killed Sad Bill had a long an happy life though.

GreatFuckability · 27/09/2017 16:47

my tortoise is called Tomasina De La Bellefort. Called Tessa for short.

Hoppinggreen · 27/09/2017 16:48

Well let's put it his way, I don't shout " Sir Bertram Woofington Nibbles " eatery time I call my dog

lazarusb · 27/09/2017 16:49

My cats are named after 2 cartoon dogs so I wouldn't worry (we didn't name them). I do like the idea of formalising it for the vet though Grin
