To think we can't call our cat "William - known as Billy"?

Grin the kids seem to think it's a great name... Surely Billy is fine? Apparently we are going to register him as William at the vet Shock

Oscar surname, he quite often gets called by his whole name, it just suits him.

Then we have smudge, who is registered as smudge no surname or anything. Now I feel a bit bad so will get the surname added on the next time we are at the vets.

Do you live in Belfast?

As TS Elliott wrote:
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

I have a cat named Silvio but we call him Spike

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/09/2017 17:52

My cats have middle names.
I middle name them when they are pissing me off, "Zazzles Singapore pack that in and tell your sister, Matilda Monza I'm not happy with her either"
I have Eponine Spa and Jemima Silverstone tooGrin

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/09/2017 17:58

We historically named our cats after stars - Bellatrix (Bella) etc.

DS(5) likes to call everything "Bob".

We're getting a kitten in 6 weeks. Here's our compromise: www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.space.com/26883-cosmic-dolphin-constellation-star-names.html

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 27/09/2017 18:01

Ihave I love the Circuit reference. Are you restricted to F1?

StatueInTheSky · 27/09/2017 18:03

I always give cats proper names. An everyday name, with a middle name and sometimes a title.

Wheresmytaco · 27/09/2017 18:04

Still snorting at Voldetort Grin

ForalltheSaints · 27/09/2017 18:05

You can call your cat any name you like, though Billy is not a name I would give.

Alltheprettydoggies · 27/09/2017 18:18

I have a cat named Tuna Noodle Catserole
I think everyone else is doing a-ok in the naming game!

Alltheprettydoggies · 27/09/2017 18:18

I know, right? I would be SO PROUD to say that at the vet
I'd stare them dead in the eye as I did

ButchyRestingFace · 27/09/2017 18:33

I have a budgie - "Floella known as Flossie".

I only call him Floella when I'm Angry.

DJBaggySmalls · 27/09/2017 19:30

If you have another DC, they will call him Billy Nonas Willy.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 27/09/2017 19:33

My parents have a neighbour who has a cat called Alan. DF feeds Alan when neighbour is away. They always refer to neighbour as 'Alan's dad' - I'm not sure they know his real name. It took about 18 months of them mentioning 'Alan's dad' before I realised Alan was a cat. My parents have a dog who doesn't like Alan, and she is quietly ashamed of DF every time he goes to feed Alan.

DollyPartonsBeard · 27/09/2017 19:33
