to want a holiday without flying?

I'm terrified of flying - I'm really claustrophobic and the thought of being trapped in a plane terrifies me (yes, I've tried the fear of flying courses, etc, etc)

I usually get medication from my doctor and force myself, however, I never really enjoy holidays as I'm really anxious in the weeks leading up to the holiday and spend the whole time I'm away shitting myself about the flight home.

We're talking about next years holiday and I mentioned that this year I'd like to go somewhere we can drive/ferry to. That I'd like to look forward to and enjoy a holiday

This is really selfish apparently. DH and the kids want to go to Ibiza again and the whole family shouldn't have to miss out because of me.

I'm really pissed off with them all. Just one year is all I'm asking for. There are lots of lovely places we can drive to, AIBU to think I'm not really asking for much

Same boat (excuse pun)

We did Eurostar/TGV to Cote D'Azur - never again. lovely joyrney there (one change at Lille?) but train stopped at station for 5 hrs on way home. Armed guards running up and down. No communication in English. Missed connecting Eurostar. Not relaxing with kids!

We have done coach to Argeles.France and caravan campsite - lovely

Coach to Spain and five star hotel - fab

It was 27-33 hours with Siesta and Shearings. One via ferry, one tunnel.

I'd love to fly again as used to do long haul etc but stopped 12 years ago. Even did Virgin Fear of Flying a couple of years ago - what a waste that was!

Bear in mind if you get the ferry to Spain that the Atlantic is rougher than the channel.

During the Summer, in good weather, the crossing to Spain is fine. You won't notice the sea.

NinonDeLenclos · 28/09/2017 13:50

And if it's not you may spend your time throwing up as my sister did when they went to Bilbao.

FiveBoys · 28/09/2017 13:52

OP, you could do a really nice Cruise from a UK port.

True Ninon and I've never understood why, we need someone to repackage it for the not-nearly dead

Not that I intend to go on one when I'm nearly dead, or indeed, ever.

We went to Spain via France so the crossing was Calais and quick and pleasant

We never flew anywhere on family holidays because my mother hates flying, too. We didn't suffer for it. And no, I don't think it's unreasonable to occasionally change the kind of holiday you have to suit different members of the family better.
