I'm a bit of a weirdo and like my soldiers made from untoasted bread (with loads of real butter) but otherwise I'm with you. If I hadn't had poached egg on toast for breakfast I'd have dippy egg for lunch.

Once the water is boiling set a timer for exactly five minutes. Run egg under cold water to stop it cooking as soon as timer goes off.

Why can't we call them dippy eggs? That's what they are. As apposed to hard boiled eggs, poached eggs etc.

Only if you call them eggs and soldiers. Dippy eggs sounds like either the eggs have gone mildly bonkers, or you've made a dip and spread it in toast.

Ardwolves - (my) boiled eggs don't always come out right so I can't always dip! It may be an annoying, cutsey phrase but it's a very apt descriptor

But it's a short step from "dippy eggs" to grown adults pronouncing it "likkle" and talking about "num-nums" and then I'm afraid we will have to call the police.

They're dippy eggs because you dip things in them and soft boiled is too long-winded.

I also call baked eggs 'special eggs' because they're special... Not just plain old eggs.

Soft-boiled has the same number of syllables as dippy so it's hardly some elaborate mouthful.

Plus, technically "dippy" isn't grammatically correct in this context - dippy as an adjective means "undulating" or "a bit silly". What you mean is that the yolk is "dippable". Or, y'know, SOFT.

It's one of those twee phrases that are meant to be all childlike and cutesy, but sound weird coming from an adult.

Dippy to me means stupid. I've never heard dippy in this context. I don't have an issue with it but this thread confused me for a minute YANBU though
