Just had it for breakfast and it was effing delicious- so underrated.

Dippy egg and butter and marmite soldiers. And I don't care if I sound like a child, that is what my Mum and Nana called them, so why the hell should I change words now, just because I'm an adult?

Also, yes OP, best thing ever!

Spadequeen · 27/09/2017 10:07

You're all very very wrong to call them dippy eggs. That's just absolutely ridiculous when you should all know they're called dunky eggs!

Southlondonmum76 · 27/09/2017 10:08

Yum yum! Another thumbs up here for dippy egg and marmite soldiers Smile

FledglingFTB · 27/09/2017 10:12

On the subject of eggs, anyone else get irrationally angry when the yolk breaks whilst poaching or frying... or is that just me?

Natsku · 27/09/2017 10:16

That gives me the rage Fledgling but I just give those eggs to OH and try again for myself

What are baked eggs?

The most delicious thing - grate some cheese in a butter ramekin, lots of cheese, and crack an egg on top, add some salt and a splash of cream and bake until the white is set but the yolk is still runny and then dip with soldiers and scoop up the delicious melted cheese and egg mix afterwards.

silkpyjamasallday · 27/09/2017 10:18

Mmmmm YANBU OP, they are one of the ultimate comfort foods. I might have them for lunch, can a one year old have runny yolk? Dd will not be impressed if I don't share

Butterymuffin · 27/09/2017 10:28

Love soft boiled egg and soldiers. Fried egg on toast also works well when there's less time to carefully boil for so long etc. I love runny eggs.

FledglingFTB · 27/09/2017 10:50

I also palm off breakages on unsuspecting OH Natsku, under the guise of an unexpected lovingly cooked breakfast Grin

RaeCJ82 · 27/09/2017 10:51

Ooh that does sound delicious Natsku!

Winterc00kie · 27/09/2017 10:55

Never tried it ssadly as i cannot stand eggs...I wish i did though....

Lol, my mum for years would shout to my dad that 'his' egg had broken. I was about 18 when I said something about him getting the broken egg all the time, he hadn't realised.

mydogisthebest · 27/09/2017 12:05

I love dippy egg and toast soldiers. My dog knows when I have that for breakfast or, occasionally, lunch he will get a bit of toast dipped in the egg yolk.

I love eggs - dippy, hard boiled, fried, poached, scrambled. I make a delicious tea with slices of tomatoes and potatoes layered with a couple of eggs broken into it and cooked in the oven.

I have been vegetarian for over 30 years but eggs are the only reason I can't be vegan

Ttbb · 27/09/2017 12:19

Soft boiled eggs are da bomb!

elQuintoConyo · 27/09/2017 12:32

Our soft boiled eggs are called Bad Boy Eggs and the soldiers are Police.

I have only heard 'dippy eggs' on MN. I'm 42.

Arealhumanbeing · 27/09/2017 13:20

Beleende

I love them. DP brings them to me in bed. Burford browns. Sourdough toast. Herbamare. Best breakfast ever.

Yes yes yes! And the blue eggs too! So pretty on the plate.

Sourdough is best for substantial dipping.

Eliza9917 · 27/09/2017 14:15

Fuck me, some people have no joy in their lives do they.

I always called them boiled eggs and soldiers but found myself calling them dippy eggs to h2b the other week Grin

Autumnskiesarelovely · 27/09/2017 14:27

Yes! But even better if someone makes them for me...

which has never happened!

RhiannonOHara · 27/09/2017 14:54

I hate the phrase dippy eggs too.

I remember them being called chucky eggs when I was a kid, which was fine when I was a kid!

I'd just say boiled eggs and soldiers.

Haven't had one in AGES but desperately want one now...

LBOCS2 · 27/09/2017 15:58

I've just offered my DC dippy eggs for tea and they turned them down. Shocking.

Oldraver · 27/09/2017 18:36

DS loves Goose egg and Helen Brownings Speedy sausages...they are very small and ideal to dip in an egg

Fresta · 27/09/2017 18:49

Definitely making boiled eggs and soldiers for tomorrows breakfast now!

5 minutes for boiling is just a guide as it totally depends on the size of the egg whether it needs more or less than that!! I have found that with experience I can now judge it pretty well. Always make sure you whip the top straight off as soon as it's out of the water to stop it cooking any more in the shell. Extra large eggs can take about 7 minutes to be soft boiled. My favourites are Burfurd Brown eggs- lovely deep orange yolks! Random sizes though!

Has anyone used one of those colour changing egg timers that you put in the pan? Do they work?

mamaduckbone · 27/09/2017 18:59

YADNBU - my lovely friend gave me some eggs from her chickens and I made myself late for work the next day because we all sat down and had dippy eggs and soldiers for breakfast.

They were the best eggs ever - really massive, dark yellow yolks. Yum.

Natsku · 27/09/2017 19:16

I use one, works really well so long as I remember to keep checking it as sometimes it flips over in the water so I have to take it out with tongs to check it.
