Boiled egg and toasted soldiers. I've never heard them called dippy eggs IRL, it is a bit twee.

echt · 26/09/2017 13:23

They were called chucky eggs in my childhood. Chopped up in a mug with butter, salt and pepper. Toast soldiers.

I want them right now.

sashh · 26/09/2017 13:25

I can never get them to be dippy without the white still being runny. Whats the trick???

Take the egg out of the water with a spoon and watch to see how quickly it dries off, if a patch dries off as soon as you take it out it should be done.

If it isn't put the lid back on for 1 min.

Oh and they have always been boiled or soft boiled eggs.

SendintheArdwolves · 26/09/2017 13:27

Cuppy eggs ... dippy eggs....jeez

Why not just call them 'spinky-winky-doodle eggsy-weggsies" and have done with it....

Eolian · 26/09/2017 13:33

Grin They are indeed very nice when you get them right. But I'm afraid I'm with the word police on this one. In my house they are just called boiled eggs (only two syllables!). As opposed to hard-boiled eggs.

Eolian · 26/09/2017 13:34

Although on reflection, I think 'spinky-winky-doodle eggsy-weggsies' may catch on. Grin

LBOCS2 · 26/09/2017 13:37

I always called them boiled eggs (because who the fuck hard boils an egg when you're having it with soldiers?) but we've taken to calling them dippy eggs recently at the instigation of my 4yo. It differentiates them from her other favourite sort of eggs; splat eggs (fried, for the uninitiated).

We're having shakshuka for dinner otherwise I would be all over that for lunch.

SendintheArdwolves · 26/09/2017 13:39

I'm making an exception in my unaccountably-zero-tolerance policy in the case of chucky eggs, however.

That sounds like a genuinely separate recipe (chopped, plus addition of butter) rather than a weird name for boiled eggs.

fivefour3twoone · 26/09/2017 13:41

Urgh I HATE the term dippy eggs too. Boiled egg and soldiers.

SumThucker · 26/09/2017 13:41

Yes to the chucky eggs! I want that now. Never heard boiled eggs being called dippy eggs though.

hula008 · 26/09/2017 13:45

PERFECT SOFT BOILED EGGS:

Boil water to rolling boil
Put eggs in, boil for 1 minute.
Take eggs off heat
Put lid on saucepan
Leave for 6 mins for quite runny, 7 for firmer eggs
Place eggs in cold water before plating up!

Perfect every single time 🥚

Themoonhatesthestars · 26/09/2017 13:45

We had dippy eggs and soldiers three nights ago, first time my 1.5yo properly dipped. And we're having it again tonight as my husbands out.

We use the Lakeland egg cooker to get perfect soft-boiled eggs, might be cheating but it works every time. I must try marmite on my soldiers.

My husband also despairs that I call them dippy eggs and that the kids copy me!!

TraceyBond · 26/09/2017 13:45

I've been lurking but signed up because of this thread!

Mmmmmm boiled egg and marmite soldiers are the best!

To think dippy eggs and toast is the best thing ever?
Northumberlandlass · 26/09/2017 13:47

Dippy Eggs with marmite soldiers Grin or Dippy Eggs with REALLY crispy streaky bacon used as soldiers!

Northumberlandlass · 26/09/2017 13:50

Boiled eggs to me are hard & dry and suck all the moisture out of my mouth....

BrutusMcDogface · 26/09/2017 13:51

Runny yolk- 🤢🤢🤢

Loopytiles · 26/09/2017 13:53

Have never heard the phrase "dippy eggs" and dislike it, but love the eggs. Delicious with rye toast.

NoParticularPattern · 26/09/2017 13:53

I hate you all for making me want dippy eggs.

For my dippy eggs I boil two eggs (from our own hens but they are roughly medium sized, not quite getting to be large) for 3 minutes. They might stand in the water for 30 secs after whilst I sort the toast out but usually straight out. Perfect DIPPY eggs.

I love dippy eggs- all that runny orangey goodness from the middle. Damn it I just had dinner!

blueshoes · 26/09/2017 14:01

Dippy dippy dippy

Ilovecoleslaw · 26/09/2017 14:03

Just had dippy egg and soldiers for lunch because of this thread!
Haven't had them in years and they were soooooo good

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 26/09/2017 14:05

I've never heard them called dippy eggs

pringlecat · 26/09/2017 14:07

I've always called them dippy eggs. Because some people think it is acceptable to serve up "soft-boiled" eggs that are not dippy, and they are deeply disappointing. It's about managing expectations.

bananafanana1 · 26/09/2017 14:13

Is Chucky eggs acceptable? Grin

RosieLig · 26/09/2017 14:13

Blerghhh to dippy egg. Sounds like toddler speak 😳

But yes yes to boiled eggs and soldiers- really buttery toast (soft not too crispy) with butter and marmite. If I'm feeling greedy I might have 2 eggs and 3 slices of toast 😱

Needalifeoverhaul · 26/09/2017 14:22

YABU! A hard (no dippiness) fried egg, crispy around the edges on toast, with ketchup and cooked tomatoes is the best ! Dippy eggs are hideous!!
