Bake off only for age 16+?!!

Watching the bake off last night with my kids, 8 and 6 on catch up. The annoying thing about it all now it's on c4 is that you obviously have to watch the adverts. No worries, we're all sitting there in our PJs with our Jamie dodgers.

Second advert break in comes an advert for 'snowman' film. Now, let me update you if you don't know what I mean, it's not the one we are all familiar with in this house (walking in the air!), oh no, it's a new film, focussing apparently on the story of bodies being found in the snow, headless. The advert is not subtle, and is not short. My kids eyes were out on stalks. Angry

So I emailed c4 to let them know this wasn't the best. They just got back to me - apparently watching anything on demand is only for 16 year olds or older, so they reserve the right to show anything they like.

What do people think? I thought bake off was a 'family show'? Won't be watching it again with my kids, well done c4...

Isnt Bake Off repeated in the day at some point at the weekend? I'm sure my toddler has seen it and he's certainly not watching TV at 8pm!

Coconutspongexo · 23/09/2017 07:12

It's shocking that you emailed because it clearly states before every programme especially on the app the age it's for, I'm not sure what you assumed emailing would achieve

carjacker1985 · 23/09/2017 08:34

TableMirror- a repeat during the day wouldn't have the ad in it, if it has a timing restriction applied. The programme is repeated, the exact ads are not.

LanaKanesLeftNippleTassle · 23/09/2017 08:57

OP YANBU.

All 4 is totally shit anyway....they have bought loads of stuff from the BBC- all family content, inc. GBBO and F1, but don't seem to care enough to a) put them up on catch up quickly- with F1 i can take a whole day between the end of the race and it going on catch up- with BBC is was instant and b) think about the people who are watching them.

They put inappropiate adverts on F1 as well, and there is no way on earth that a fucking sport is rated 16+.
So we can no longer settle down on a sunday eve and watch racing together as a family in case an advert for death comes up.

And there is no way the bakeoff would be rated 16+ ffs, it's a cookery programme- what the fuck is wrong with some of you??

If Ch 4 want to keep on nicking programmes off the BBC, they need to make sure they are suitable for the audience- that includes the adverts.

Most people watch telly on catch up now don't they, and most people don't have the ability to record any more, we watch everything on a smart tv, no recording device at all.

As for the poster who was outraged because it was "free"! LOL! Ch4 has always been free you pratt, and Amazon Firestick costs money, but don't let that get in the way of a nasty, pointless bullshit post.

It's shocking that you emailed because it clearly states before every programme especially on the app the age it's for, I'm not sure what you assumed emailing would achieve

Maybe if more people complained they would fucking pay attention??
It's ridiculous that a family show can't be watched by a family because some wanker in a suit can't be arsed go pay the miniscule amount it would cost to get someone to add a few lines of code to the software that sets up the ads, that assesses the programme and makes the ads age appropiate.

Who intheir right minds thinks bake off is 16+??
It's a fucking cooking show, no drugs, killing, or even adult humour.

CheshireSplat · 23/09/2017 09:01

I agree OP. DD1 is 5 and loves it! I just try and distract her when the adverts are on.

grassseedy · 23/09/2017 09:04

I have to admit to being amused that apparently emailing a company to complain about something you don't think is ok is shocking Grin

And you think this is more shocking than having your 6 year old watching headless bodies being discovered in snow?!? Confused

OP posts:
carjacker1985 · 23/09/2017 09:09

Programmes aren't rated 16+, 4OD simply tells you that some of the content may not be suitable for people under 16- both programme and advertising.

Bake Off isn't violence and sex and swearing, sure- but it is double entendre and occasional sex jokes which are admittedly very tame but would ensure that it's not classified as a programme suitable for children. The viewership stats will not be mainly children in the way that something like Peppa Pig will be, they will have the viewing stats and know the age and sex of the majority viewership- and I can guarantee they'll be over 16.

RhiWrites · 23/09/2017 09:12

I'm with you OP and I'm about the least "think of the children" person ever.

I watch Bake Off, it's completely appropriate for kids and I'm really surprised that C4's response to you is such a brush off. Your lego point is well made.

Also the online service is awful, just like ITV, you can't get back to a place you paused without watching the whole thing again.

What I'd do is
A) tell your tech obsessed husband you need to receive TV via cable so you can watch programmes without ads retrying your kids.
B) write to the regulator (calmly) about C4 insisting that anything online is fair game for explicit adverts.

RhiWrites · 23/09/2017 09:13
  • retrying = horrifying
childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 23/09/2017 09:18

OP I havent read all the thread. But I totally agree with you. I am tired of having crap inflicted on me that I havent asked for, dont want etc by marketing people whop do not get in the real world that they are damaging their own brand by their ridiculous tricks.

As for the person who queried you emailing,. I expect they sit and moan yet do nothing. Companies need feedback to understand what they are doing right and where they are going wrong. Some companies are so arrogant they need a lot of feedback. Yes it does take time but if more people bothered then things would improve faster.

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/09/2017 18:11

These programmes you are watching are funded by adverts. If you don't want to see the adverts then I suggest you either watch the bbc (with a paid for licence) or pay for Netflix/Amazon Prime etc where you don't have to watch adverts.

Do you think Channel 4 etc have a magic money tree that means they can make stuff for you to watch for free with no advertising revenue?

kali110 · 23/09/2017 19:24

Again, is 4od different on the firestick to 4od on virgin?

amandaloux · 23/09/2017 19:37

The thing is, you’re watching Bake Off on a COMPLETELY different platform than on TV. It’s not that Bake Off is rated 16+ - watching content in general on 4od is and you accept their T&Cs by using the service. It’s not that hard to comprehend.

When you watch 4od, you’re consenting to ads. As you know, ads aren’t specifically chosen per programme. They’re based on your browsing history, location, what’s currently trending etc. Stupid ads get through from time to time.

Bake Off is a popular show for all ages. It isn’t specifically aimed for at kids AT ALL. The amount of sexual innuendo that’s on the show???

By all means, complain about stupid ad content but don’t go all ‘think of the children!!!!!11111’. You could have easily paused the ad, closed the browser etc. or not used a service specified as being 16+.

eyebrowsonfleek · 23/09/2017 19:46

When a website is mentioned on a kid’s programme, they always say to ask an adult/bill payer for permission before going online.

4OD is an online service (it costs money to go online) and online services can’t allow children to register an account hence their requirement that you have to be over 16 to register and use the service. They aren’t saying that the content is 16+

I suspect that many kids have inadvertently seen inappropriate adverts as a result of parents making the same mistake as you. That’s probably one of the reasons why Google made a Kids version of the YouTube app. I suspect that law about watershed advertising probably hasn’t caught up with technology.

Izzabellasasperella · 23/09/2017 20:07

We usually watch live or on catch up. I hate the ads anyway so we mute the TV and talk about the bakes😀

sharksDen · 23/09/2017 20:10

I think ads should reflect the content of the show you're currently watching. If nothing else, it makes better sense from a marketing POV.

Absolutely.

Bake Off, I'd guess, tends to have an over-18 audience.

OwlKiss · 23/09/2017 20:12

It is repeated at around 5.30 pm on a Sunday - perfect family viewing time. My DC watch it then, I pootle around ironing school uniforms in the background (I watch it when first shown during the week).

grassseedy · 23/09/2017 20:28

Thanks for a the repeating explanations about why channel 4's catch up service is different. I am not hard of thinking, understanding something still doesn't make it ok.

C4 have made a poor and incongruous decision to buy a programme that is a family show, but only show it on a catch up service that is 16+. Of note is the fact that catch up viewing figures still count to the total (within 7 days), so presumably they are still wanting people to watch on catch up, just perhaps not families.

This is how we watch tv these days, I can't remember the last time we watched a show as it went out. That is why the catch up service is included in the viewing figures - many many people are the same. Happy to watch adverts, again I understand this is one of the ways tv is funded.

But no matter, we won't watch together again. There are plenty of other things we can watch together where we won't be shocked by completely mismatched content in the breaks.

No they don't, they show it on tv - twice.

megletthesecond · 23/09/2017 20:39

Thanks owl we can watch it before countryfile Smile .

Nomorechickens · 23/09/2017 22:38

It's not acceptable that 4OD show adult ads in family / pre-watershed programmes.
In my experience PVRs are rubbish, I have had 3 and all started to malfunction after a year and completely useless after 2-3 years. So I am reduced to catch up TV. If anyone can recommend a decent PVR, I would love to be able to fast forward the ads again. Am almost feeling nostalgic for video recorders (though I hated them at the time)

childmaintenanceserviceinquiry · 23/09/2017 22:41

WaxOnFeckOff

"If you don't want to see the adverts then I suggest you either watch the bbc (with a paid for licence) or pay for Netflix/Amazon Prime etc where you don't have to watch adverts."

I do exactly this. Watch BBC programmes live (clutching my paid for licence) and any thing else, always on catch up or a channel where i can fast forward ads. I didnt use to mind adverts because in a 1-hour show they used to be every 20 mins for 2-3 mins. Now they are every fricking few minutes for a short time. Cant be arsed! It is exactly the point I made which you ignored "they are damaging their own brand".

WaxOnFeckOff · 23/09/2017 22:44

I didn't ignore it, it just wasn't relevant to the point.

MyNewBearTotoro · 23/09/2017 22:49

I can see your point about this but I guess there will be a reason that 4od can't tailor adverts to the show in the same way they do on live television.

When watching 4od I mute the adverts and open a web browser so I don't have to sit through them. Is this something you could do so that your kids can still watch Bake Off on catch up without seeing potentially unsuitable adverts?

kali110 · 23/09/2017 23:20

But they repeat the show 2 days later?
