Bake off only for age 16+?!!

Watching the bake off last night with my kids, 8 and 6 on catch up. The annoying thing about it all now it's on c4 is that you obviously have to watch the adverts. No worries, we're all sitting there in our PJs with our Jamie dodgers.

Second advert break in comes an advert for 'snowman' film. Now, let me update you if you don't know what I mean, it's not the one we are all familiar with in this house (walking in the air!), oh no, it's a new film, focussing apparently on the story of bodies being found in the snow, headless. The advert is not subtle, and is not short. My kids eyes were out on stalks. Angry

So I emailed c4 to let them know this wasn't the best. They just got back to me - apparently watching anything on demand is only for 16 year olds or older, so they reserve the right to show anything they like.

What do people think? I thought bake off was a 'family show'? Won't be watching it again with my kids, well done c4...

lol at GBBO not being suitable for kids. It's straight up classic "family viewing". It's my 9yos fav show. It's aimed at families.

Your right OP I think it's off. Ads should be suitable for intended audience and All4 is having you on.

What next? Do they play this ad on the kiddie on demand shows too. Or course not. They have either fucked up or are taking the piss.

steff13 · 22/09/2017 21:10

off tangent but is that based on Jo Nesbo's book?

I'm intrigued by the book, but the main character is called Harry Hole? Is it good?

SaucyJack · 22/09/2017 21:11

I don't think YABU.

I don't watch GBBO- but I have read that Jo Nesbo book. There weren't any cakes in it.

It wouldn't kill them to put a bit of thought into matching up ads with the programme being shown.

carjacker1985 · 22/09/2017 21:11

There is also a specific restriction to stop ads being aired around programming aimed at children, which is why that doesn't happen. But the show has to have audience figures that are majority children for that to apply- just because something's family friendly doesn't mean kids are the majority audience.

PurpleMinionMummy · 22/09/2017 21:12

Yanbu. I assumed the age restriction was to stop kids watching age inappropriate programmes, not to prevent them seeing dodgy adverts during a family or kids programme.

SaucyJack · 22/09/2017 21:13

"Is it good?"

It's great if you like the sort of books where body parts are found in inappropriate places.

AirandMungBeans · 22/09/2017 21:13

Thanks for the warning. My five year old loves watching bake off. I can't see how the programme itself is unsuitable. He likes to see the cooking as he loves getting involved in the kitchen. The innuendos go over his head completely. I think I'll record it in future. I don't understand why they'd need to change the adverts. Surely they could just play the whole thing on catchup, adverts included, rather than putting different ones in. It would also eliminate the tendency that catch up has to stutter or de-sync the sound after every add break.

BorisTrumpsHair · 22/09/2017 21:16

Ah thanks for the indirect heads up re The Snowman film. Never realised it was Nesbo film. Not that I will go and see it. The book is scary enough.

rumbelina · 22/09/2017 21:17

But a categorisation by timing is equivalent to watershed categorisation. Channel 4 have the original scheduling time of the show, so they should use that to categorise the ads on catchup. Parents can't "take responsibility for their children's viewing" if they're going to be confronted with unforseeable and unskippable adult content

YANBU, OP!

BoomBoomsCousin · 22/09/2017 21:23

I don't understand why they'd need to change the adverts.

They get different advertisers wanting (and being prepared to pay) for advertising at different points in time and to different audiences. If MArks and Spencers advertised their Haloween sale in the week before Halloween, they wouldn't want to be paying for that advert to go out in the week after Halloween. C4 may have identified that their live TV watching audience is predominantly 40+ and based in the South, whereas their catch-up audience is 16 - 30 and more evenly spread across the country (for example). Some advertisers may not be prepared to pay for broadcast TV and are only prepared for their advertising to go out to 100,000 audience members online,

Thisismadness · 22/09/2017 21:25

A lot of people being very obtuse here. Not at all unreasonable for ch4 to have pre watershed ads for people watching a pre watershed show on catch up.

Special lol for the pp outraged by the op watching ‘for free’ on the Amazon firestick!

Buglife · 22/09/2017 21:26

Watching 4od isn't 'free stuff' that some dodgy people have! Anyone can watch it online for free. Also the Firestick costs £30 and Amazon Prime costs £80 a year.

steff13 · 22/09/2017 21:26

It's great if you like the sort of books where body parts are found in inappropriate places.

I do. I assume you do as well, based on your username.

grassseedy · 22/09/2017 21:33

I agree about the obtuseness. C4 paid for the chance to take a family show over to their network. Presumably a reasonable proportion of the audience who already watched it are under 16, or their parents!! I'd not be mad keen on seeing this advert by myself tbh, I am not their prime target. Stupid advertising placement if nothing else?

daisypond · 22/09/2017 21:37

But the rules around catch-up and on demand services are completely different to standard broadcast television. If you want Bake Off with the sort of ads you might expect with an 8pm showing, you have to record it yourself and not use the on demand service. On Demand is not like a personal video recorder. Different advertisers will want different adverts shown either on TV or on catch-up services for all sorts of reasons, and one of those might be that the on demand service is for 16+.

grassseedy · 22/09/2017 21:44

I suppose I wasn't asking about the rules, or what advertisers want. I was asking whether people thought it was ok? I don't. I don't have a recording box to avoid adverts (can't believe advertisers want that), and so I won't watch again (can't believe advertisers or c4 want that).

OP posts:
carjacker1985 · 22/09/2017 21:48

I think it's okay in as much as I know there isn't much else they can do outside of what they're already doing. If you think a particular ad is inappropriate for the time/programme, complain to the ASA.

Slimthistime · 22/09/2017 21:54

If it's the trailer on YouTube then it looks okay for any time I'm afraid. And looks great!

But more to the point, the media was full of video ads for Raw when it came out and there was a brief clip of a tonne of blood coming down, which I thought was awful, you don't get a 16+ warning reading news on your tablet.

If that was considered okay then I don't imagine you'll get any joy complaining about this ad, which is actually very subtle if it's the one I'm looking at.

4od are still saying 16 only so that is your guideline. And tbh doesn't half the adult population watch Bake Off? No wonder they are advertising a main stream film.

kali110 · 22/09/2017 22:14

Is it just the stick you cant fastforward through adverts?
I can ff/rewind on demand/catchup on virgin.

kali110 · 22/09/2017 22:15

Plus that advert is on after 8 on tv so i dont think them showing it through the bakeoff is unreasonable, no.

kali110 · 22/09/2017 22:16

Slimthistime yes i can't wait to see it! Really dont see that it was so bad Confused

Slimthistime · 22/09/2017 22:23

I can only access All4 via the app and you can't ff ads on that.

I thought the Raw ads were appalling but as I say, no one was asked to sign in about being over 16. That said, I thought the ad was revolting anyway, I think it's fair to say a lot of people wouldn't expect that ad unless they were watching a similarly gory film and that was included as a trailer.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 22/09/2017 22:45

I've been using 4OD to show the DCs Lego Masters and The Crystal Maze. The programmes themselves are completely appropriate for a young family to watch. They shouldn't be rendered unsuitable because of inappropriate advertising that can't be skipped

I can't remember how to record on the VCR. It's been about 20 years Grin

PurplePillowCase · 22/09/2017 22:49

many people don't have recording devices anymore.

Procrastination4 · 22/09/2017 23:05

The Snowman book I thought was grand-but the trailer looks seriously scary! I can see how children would be frightened by it. The downside of Catch-up, I guess. (I don't use it so I didn't realise it was for 16+)
