To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

Sorry, I reported the racist before I saw that others wanted to leave the posts to speak for themselves.

Nicewaterfeature, you're a disgrace and a racist. Please take it somewhere else, or preferably keep it in your mum's basement.

A lot of comments are going to be deleted as someone can't seemto discuss without being offensive Hmm

FlamingoFlower · 21/09/2017 10:39

I'm one of the lucky ones - I used to have to wash my hair every other day but now I can get away with once a week or once every 5 days!

I washed it yesterday and its still lovely and soft and shiny and as soon as it starts to look dull and greasy that's when I will wash it.

Oh and my hair is past my shoulders, and lovely and thick. It used to fall out in clumps when I was washing it every other day!

I don't use any hairspray or anything on it which probably helps aswell.

justilou1 · 21/09/2017 10:46

After a lifetime of thick, dry hair, when I had my babies my hair became thin and so greasy that it was an oil slick before dinner if I washed it in the morning. The oil began to irritate my scalp, and I had tiny, painful pimply things on my scalp, and I felt smelly. My hairdresser told me that oily hair is caused by hormones, not because you wash your hair too often. She said that silicone is the worst thing for hair that has ever happened in the modern world. It coats the hair shaft, weakening the hair, and then builds up on the scalp. There are no products that effectively remove this buildup. Dry shampoo is not the answer as it doesn't clean your hair, but sticks the oil to your scalp and can cause fungal infections, folliculitis and seborrheic dermatitis. (Of course it's great to have on hand for emergencies, but hairdressers don't advocate using it daily!). I have FINALLY found an unscented, silicone-free, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner (This one: www.healthdelivery.com.au/a-kin-unscented-shampoo-500ml.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI77LM6P611gIVyQMqCh3JBgMIEAQYAiABEgLQivD_BwE) Which I am sure you can get quite easily in the UK. It takes a few weeks use to notice a difference, but it lasts forever and my hair looks and feels amazing.

Also - in the last few months I have been taking a very high vitamin d supplement for another medical problem and my hair has thickened up even more - especially the shitty baldy bits at my temples!

PollyFlint · 21/09/2017 10:46

My mum could quite easily go for a week without washing her hair. She has dry skin and a dry scalp and it just never, ever gets greasy. It doesn't smell either - I'd certainly tell her if it did. Her hair is thick and wavy and really healthy.

I, on the other had, have oily skin and hair. I know people say that washing it too often makes it oilier ... but in my experience, this actually isn't the case for people with truly oily hair. I have tried washing it less frequently but to no avail. I have a friend with very similar hair who has the same problem - she spent a year backpacking when she was younger and washed her hair quite infrequently during that time and it didn't get less oily at all, she was massively disappointed!

I just have to wash it most days, and on days I don't wash it I have to use dry shampoo. Fortunately my hair's short and easily styled. I've tried pretty much every type of shampoo out there, too, from ultra-gentle non-foaming ones to the very detergenty ones aimed at removing product build-up. I've tried conditioning and I've tried not conditioning. The result is exactly the same for everything I've ever tried over 20 years.

I do think it's something that just varies from person to person - the no-shampoo or infrequent washing thing will be absolutely great for some hair types but just isn't practical for mine. If I had really curly or Afro hair then I'd be totally on board with the no-shampoo thing, I'm sure.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 21/09/2017 10:48

My hair is in better condition now that I don't wash it every day. I was told that too frequent washing would strip the scalp of it's natural oils and result in an overproduction of sebum, leading to more grease-prone roots (the opposite effect to what I intended). Drying your hair with heat too often can also damage the hair. Now I wash it twice a week at the most and while my hair does get a little greasy between washes, I just use dry shampoo and my hair is a lot better.

BetsyRose87 · 21/09/2017 10:53

I feel the same about mine Barbie, I feel like I still have teenager hair, but I've noticed recently that mines starting to break easily. There is benefit in resisting washing for at least every other day, your hair then feels incredible when you do wash it! It took me some time to find a dry shampoo that works for me. An old wives tail is flickering in my mind of using a light bit of talc powder?? Not sure about that...If you can stick it up in a pony tail (sadly I have the joys of my father's mouse like ears so I feel ridiculous with them on show!) or have a head band hold back your fringe when you feel its greasy it'll give your hair a needed break. x

mishfish · 21/09/2017 10:58

I'm like 50% dry shampoo and50% coffee by Friday. Dry shampoo is your friend

newbian · 21/09/2017 10:58

Oh wow I missed a storm of nonsense it seems!

Personally I would be very surprised if anyone regardless of their hair type literally stank by skipping a day or two of shampoo. If they did seems like a body odor problem or perhaps they're just skipping their shower completely.

HidingUnderARock · 21/09/2017 11:05

To those saying that daily hair washing makes your hair/scalp produce more grease, does this make it a good activity for slimming?

/misses point

PyongyangKipperbang · 21/09/2017 11:10

Well according to MN, the charmer has been banned so I can stink in peace!

KityGlitr · 21/09/2017 11:12

I've washed and conditioned mine every single day since I can remember, my mum did the same so it never entered my mind not to. Why would you wash your body and face every day in the shower but not your hair, which equally attracts dirt and smells and produces oils? It doesn't make any sense. It's just as easy to wash it as to go to the effort of trying to keep it dry. I'd feel disgusting and gross leaving the house with unwashed hair.

I always get compliments on my hair from random people and hairdressers commenting on how sleek and incredibly shiny it is and from hairdressers asking how I keep it in such good condition. It's a black longish bob with a fringe (think Uma in pulp fiction but a bit longer). No judgement against those who don't wash daily but I admit I have known people who've only washed 1-4 times per week and they've often had a really awful distinctive scent to their hair, it's looked greasy and had white flecks in it. I couldn't bear having hair that would be offputting to run my hands through.

KityGlitr · 21/09/2017 11:15

I wouldn't aim to 'get away' with washing less often even if I could to be fair, I like looking and feeling my best and wouldn't want to leave the house looking less than my best. It takes me about 45-55 minutes in the morning to shower, shave, wash and condition hair, apply makeup, blow dry and straighten hair and dress. That hour is more than worth it to spend the rest of the day feeling great about myself and my appearance and confident!

Ollivander84 · 21/09/2017 11:15

I don't wash daily as I said above because my hair is incredibly dry. It takes over an hour to diffuse it or over 12hrs to air dry

Ollivander84 · 21/09/2017 11:16

Day 3 hair

To not get this not washing your hair thing?!
NameChangr678 · 21/09/2017 11:18

It's just as easy to wash it as to go to the effort of trying to keep it dry.

Rubbish - a shower with my hair tied up takes under 5 minutes. Washing and conditioning my hair takes about 15-20.

Elendon · 21/09/2017 11:21

Your hair is my dream hair @Ollivander84

It's gorgeous!

@existentialmoment

P.S. The angry imaginary "racism" warriors are at it again

What is imaginary about it? She said black people stink, if you can't see the racism there you need to go to specsavers.

Boy, do you have a chip on your shoulder. She did not once say that black people stink. Not once, or even anything close to it. She said she had a friend with thick curly hair who didn't wash it regularly, and that her hair stank. Not once did she mention this person's ethnicity, and came back to clarify that her friend was in fact white, but by that time you'd already played the race card and got it all deleted. Yes, she was rude to you, but you deserved it for jumping to such a ridiculous conclusion. Do you do that in all areas of your life? You might want to chill out a little bit.

Do you realise that white people can also have thick curly hair, or do you think that's exclusively your preserve? Doesn't that make YOU a racist?

People like you, who play the race card at the slightest little thing, give the rest of BAME people a bad name. You should be ashamed of yourself.

LesDennishair · 21/09/2017 11:26

What do you wash with Ollivander, when you do wash?

Dry hair here too, in fact I use some hair products from the Dark and Lovely hair product range (one with olive oil is very good).

kali110 · 21/09/2017 11:28

She said people who dont wash their hair everyday stink.
Oh how strange, a brand new poster..

Ollivander84 · 21/09/2017 11:31

I wash with moogoo conditioner, then condition with Shea moisture low porosity
Add cantu custard and curl activator to soaking wet hair, and wait until it's bone dry before I scrunch the crispy cast out

Eleanorsummer · 21/09/2017 11:38

I wash mine once a week but then I have really dry hair.

noeffingidea · 21/09/2017 11:47

I have really dry hair now (used to be greasy when I was younger), I wash it from once a day after swimming, to once a week when I can't go swimming.
IME it's not the frequency of washing that dries it out, or makes it greasy, it's the products and techniques that you use. There really is something to suit everyone, and I'm surprised that a hairdresser would think one rule suits everyone.

LesDennishair · 21/09/2017 11:48

Thanks Olliv! I've just been looking up the moogoo.

Nazdarovye · 21/09/2017 11:48

How often you have to wash your hair depends on your hair type, I am afraid. The people who have to wash it every day tend to be Caucasians with fine thin hair. Simply because the oil which is produced by the scalp shows much quicker on straight fine hair, whereas thick and curly hair tends to absorb it and it's not that visible for a couple of days or even weeks. You'll hear it a lot from blacks, Asians etc...that they don't need to wash their hair often, only once a week or less. It's because the structure and type of their hair is different. There might be exceptions to this rule but it generally applies.

It's also a mistake to compare how you washed your hair as a child and how you have to wash it now. Most children need only a weekly hairwash but once you hit puberty it changes for a lot of people because of our hormones and the oils and bodily fluids they produce on the scalp and skin.
So don't put too much faith in shampoos as they are not the deciding factor on how your hair looks. Of course choose a good shampoo but choose it according to you hair type. It won't work the other way around. So if you have greasy hair choose a shampoo for greasy hair. Just because you buy a shampoo for normal hair, your hair will not miraculously turn normal.
