To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

I wash my hair every day and I'm a hair dresser, years ago it was advised to not wash hair to often because the shampoo was very harsh bit like washing up liquid but these days shampoos are much gentler and more nourishing so really shouldn't be a problem

Troika · 21/09/2017 12:21

I've been washing mine every other day instead of every day for the past 5 years or so and my hair is still rank on day 2 so I don't believe this bollocks of your scalp adjusting. I always tie it up on day 2 but it is still obviously greasy Sad

Ttbb · 21/09/2017 12:32

The more you wash it the quicker it will get oily. You are supposed to have a certain amount of oil in your hair anyway. If you keep stripping it your body will freak out and go into over drive.

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 12:34

I wish people would stop saying this as if it were a fact. It might be true for some people, but others just do have oily hair, and if you don't wash it frequently it does not get any better, you just have to walk around with oily hair!!

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 12:37

Do you realise that white people can also have thick curly hair, or do you think that's exclusively your preserve? Doesn't that make YOU a racist

I didn't comment at all on her "friend", that wasn't at all the point. She said everyone who doesn't wash their hair daily was disgusting and stunk. I mentioned that pretty much no-one with afro or textured hair would ever wash their hair anything like daily, and generally less frequently than white people, and asked surely she didn't mean that all black people stink? She answered that yes they do. All of them.

You can think that imaginary racism if you like. Hmm

EsperanzaDesperanza · 21/09/2017 12:42

Thick, curly hair here. My hair is so much more manageable since I cut back to washing it twice a week and stopped using a hairdryer.

OurMiracle1106 · 21/09/2017 12:44

Don't use conditioner every time you wash. I wash my hair daily as go to the gym but only use shampoo and then condition twice a week.

LesDennishair · 21/09/2017 12:45

Just because you buy a shampoo for normal hair, your hair will not miraculously turn normal.

Do people actually do that Grin

dietcokeandwine · 21/09/2017 12:45

I am Caucasian with fine hair. I've washed it every day since I was about 12 (am now mid forties) and I'm not about to stop now!

For me it's not just about having clean hair, it's as much about the morning shower, the feel of the water on my face and head, I feel utterly rank if I don't have a morning shower. It adds about three minutes to my shower time to wash, rinse and condition my hair, it's really not a problem to have to wash it every day. I don't care if the daily washing does make it more greasy!

astratty76666 · 21/09/2017 12:53

She actually said "All black people stink", did she? No, she did not. I saw the posts before they were removed. She said nothing of the sort.

You can lie to fit your own race-card-playing agenda if you like - and god, I dread to think what you're like in real life if you get this uppity about a hair thread - but it doesn't paint you in a very good light.

Sallystyle · 21/09/2017 12:59

astratty You sound just like the poster who made those comments in the first place.

Funny that!

Elendon · 21/09/2017 13:04

What is normal hair anyway?

I mean is this all just shoehorning people with very different hair into Greasy (you do not see shampoos saying this anymore), Normal - say what? or Dry, which is what exactly?

Frequent wash, every other day, twice a week shampoo labels from now on!

JustAnotherUser123456 · 21/09/2017 13:06

I absolutely hear where you're coming from OP. I suspect I'm Peri-Menopausal and my hair has never been greasier and in worse condition Sad - it never really recovered from when I had my first DD 6 years ago.

Could you try washing every other day and using a dry shampoo between washes? I use Batiste Volume dry shampoo and it makes a massive difference. I also use Vosene shampoo which seems to tackle the greasiness a bit.

Branleuse · 21/09/2017 13:12

If your hair NEEDS washing a lot, then it DOES smell if you dont, because it gets oily and the oil goes rancid and attracts dirt.

If your hair doesnt get oily, then it doesnt usually get smelly either.

If I dont wash my hair every day or two then it gets oily and you can smell it. My mum could get away with not washing her hair for weeks (afro thickness and texture), or ever probably and she doesnt smell. WE HAVE DIFFERENT TYPES OF HAIR WHICH REQUIRE DIFFERENT TREATMENTS. What the fuck difference does it make to anyone else if I wash my hair daily, or if im stripping it of its natural oils. I also dye it every 3 weeks. I do not give a shiny shit about my hairs natural oils and whether im depleting them. I just want my hair to look and feel ok

Feelslikecrystal · 21/09/2017 13:20

I also have very fine, thin and greasy hair. In fact think I'm going bald and I definitely think dry shampoo has conributed to the baldness. Can't abide the stuff now, feel filthy all day when ive used it. It is easier to wash and dry hair daily and it looks less thin when freshly washed.

peachgreen · 21/09/2017 13:25

@U2HasTheEdge My thoughts exactly!

Ambonsai · 21/09/2017 13:29

My hair is awful
Have to wash it every day
Have tried dry shampoo, complete bollocks
Anyway I'd have to wet it cos it sticks up everywhere
So easier to wash it anyway
Seriously i would be very embarrassed to be seen with greasy hair. It's not just the grease, it's flat, stuck to my head, gross.

kali110 · 21/09/2017 13:34

U2HasTheEdge
Strangely ast has only joined today, this was their first thread and they happened to defend the poster! What a coincidence Grin

stevie69 · 21/09/2017 13:35

I never wash my hair Blush

Chewbecca · 21/09/2017 13:39

My hair looks horrid if I don't wash it daily.

A good friend with similar hair has switched to washing every other day on her hairdresser's advice, and it looks bad on the second day. It has been a couple of years since she switched now, so it hasn't got used to it as people suggest.

Jamhandprints · 21/09/2017 13:57

My hair is really thin too. I have found a trick to not wash every day. I just wet the fringe every day and put a big curler in to dry and then a tiny spray of hairspray (I use unscented). Also, do you use conditioner? I have stopped using it. Now I only need to wash every 3 days...which is good cos we have no hot water in our house. :-/

why12345 · 21/09/2017 14:04

I was mine everyday even if it doesn't need it. It helps me wake up in the morning 🤦🏻‍♀️

BlackeyedSusan · 21/09/2017 14:23

if you do not wash everyday you do need to comb (or brush?) everyday.

RarelyInfallible · 21/09/2017 14:26

I went from dark brown to platinum blonde 2 years ago. Before the first time the colourist advised me to try to avoid shampooing my hair for a few days before. I realised that with my (short fine) hair it was the wetting that was needed rather than the shampoo. After bleaching I tried to reduce the number of shampoos to avoid drying it out. I rinse every day and condition most days, but I only shampoo my hair about every 3-4 weeks (yes, weeks) and it's fine (and doesn't smell).
