To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

I think you are a racist twat as well. nicewaterfeature

No one smells rank if they don't wash daily. Get a grip!

picklemepopcorn · 21/09/2017 10:24

If you are washing because of exercise sweat, try scrubbing your scalp with water and not using shampoo. That may be enough.

I also wash my hair every day otherwise it gets so greasy. I toss and turn at night and my hair is always horrible in the morning. The only exception I make to daily washing is on the odd day when I am working from home and not leaving the house.

My hair is highlighted too and yet I am always told that it is in lovely condition, and my colour still looks good when I go to the hairdressers. I use Aveda Camomile shampoo and a huge bottle lasts me forever. I use a range of different conditioners depending on what I'm doing and also use a deep conditioner every 1-2 weeks.

I think you have to do what suits your hair and go with it. After years of enduring a miserable second day of greasy hair, believing that daily washing would damage it, I will never go back!

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 10:26

I would report that but I'd rather leave your racist twatty rantings up for everyone to see.

HailLapin · 21/09/2017 10:28

Not rtft but have you tried t gel shampoo?

I have always had greasy hair that's needed to be washed every day/every other day if I'm lucky. Since I accidentally (my dd was advised to use it for scalp problems) discovered t gel I can now go four days without a wash easily.

It is expensive but I'd say it's worth it.

Roomba · 21/09/2017 10:28

I washed my hair daily for years as it is fine and would look greasy again by evening.

After I had DS2 (extreme reflux, screamed blue murder if put down at all) I had to go down to washing every other day. I was amazed to find that after a couple of weeks my hair did adjust and it wasn't greasy by evening at all, or even on the second day. I occasionally go 3 days now and it only looks a bit greasy just before I wash it (don't use dry shampoo or anything).

So your scalp does adjust. I do not believe however that it would adjust to never being washed. An ex colleague stopped washing her long hair and after a few weeks raved about how soft and shiny it was. It really wasn't, it looked grim and she smelled like a wet dog all the time!

tigerdog · 21/09/2017 10:28

Wow, hair washing managed to get really nasty in the time it took me to post.

Elendon · 21/09/2017 10:28

I'm not reporting either. It's clear the agenda on racism is big with this one.

Back to hair washing.

This. Not washing your hair every day is rank and grim. I once did a hobby with a girl who espoused this "don't wash your hair" every day nonsense. She absolutely stank - you could smell her hair when she walked into a room. Disgusting.
Then you dont know much.
Washing your hair everyday strips your hair of its natural oils, making it want to produce more, making it more greasy- meaning you need to wash it more.

and you know even less about afro carribbean hair Hmm

Sallystyle · 21/09/2017 10:30

What? I am rank and grim because I don't wash my hair every day? That's a little bit OTT don't you think? My hair is super thick and gets very fluffy. The day I wash it my hair is pretty difficult to manage. Products and straightening works well for a few hours then it frizzes up again. My hair looks nice the day after I wash it.

Fuck if I'm washing it daily.

Dont worry, dont think they'll be here long, they cant say much without sprouting racist or offensive insults Hmm

You could try using a sulphate free gentle shampoo and conditioner like the rainforest one from the body shop. If you use any styling products, make sure they don't contain silicone (ingredients that end in -xane, -conol or -cone) as it is harder to strip silicone out with sulphate free. Or you could just use a sulphate shampoo once a week.

I stopped using products containing silicone a couple of years ago (and I only wash with silicone free conditioner as i have curly hair but that's another story, one that would have me branded disgusting and rank no doubt Confused). My hair has gone from greasy rats tails after the first day to looking fine on day 3/4. I don't blow dry it and it takes most of the day to dry so would make no sense to wash every day.

I'm going to ask some people who I know will be brutally honest whether it smells and see...

Pblac · 21/09/2017 10:31

washing your hair everyday strips the hair of its natural oils and drying it out, which tricks it into thinking it needs to make more oil to replace what's been lost through frequent washing = hair that gets greasy quickly!

^This.

My tips. Especially for older, fine or greasy hair.

  1. Always use a non-sulphate shampoo. Sulphates dry out hair and make it more dull and less shiny (I have really noticed the difference).
  2. Wash hair in warm water, not hot. Hot is too damaging for the hair.
  3. Warm water opens the pores and enables proper washing.
  4. But "seal" at the end with cold water to close the pores. Will make hair less greasy.
  5. Towel drying is not good for fine hair. Just wrap gently in absorbent towels.

As a result of above I have managed to make my hair last about 5 days instead of 2-3.

P.S. The angry imaginary "racism" warriors are at it again. So many people come on MN looking for a fight, especially the nice liberal folk Grin. Anyway, moving on...

Elendon · 21/09/2017 10:31

she smelled like a wet dog all the time!

For goodness sake! Can we stop this nonsense?

Mumof3wunnerfuls · 21/09/2017 10:31

I used to as well but don't anymore.
It def makes hair worse in the long run washing it everyday.

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 10:31

Racists get narked when you show their workings! I see someone doesn't understand their own logic.

Anyway, the majority of people do not wash their hair every day and do not need to.

nicewaterfeature · 21/09/2017 10:32

Stink then, for all I care. Enjoy!

existentialmoment · 21/09/2017 10:32

P.S. The angry imaginary "racism" warriors are at it again

What is imaginary about it? She said black people stink, if you can't see the racism there you need to go to specsavers.

Sallystyle · 21/09/2017 10:35

Oh dear, someone got angry quickly.

LesDennishair · 21/09/2017 10:35

No 'poo people usually, in my experience, use some sort of dry shampoo in between and I've never noticed any bad smell.

I only wash hair every 4/5 days, less if possible. My hair is in much nicer condition. I have a lustrous shine now, nearly anyway (ignore my username Grin)

kali110 · 21/09/2017 10:35

nice strange none of the hairdressers i know stink Confused

NameChangr678 · 21/09/2017 10:36

What about dirt, grease, pollution, cooking smells, things that cling to your hair? They don't discriminate depending on what kind of hair you have. Not washing it is grim, you're walking around with dirt in your hair and I think it's gross.

Are you for real?

Unless you live in Beijing, there is not that much dirt and pollution around that it's "clinging to your hair". My hair smells the same on Day 1 and Day 6.

Gross is not wiping after a shit. Having a bit of oil in your hair after a few days is hardly gross, don't be so dramatic.

Also, why is other people's hair your problem?

LesDennishair · 21/09/2017 10:37

What was the racism? With hair washing? A comment has been deleted so I can't see.
