AIBU?

To not get this not washing your hair thing?!

Recent trip to the hairdresser resulted in me getting told off (gently) for washing my hair every day. Post pregnancy my hair is a lot thinner and prone to breaking, and in the last few months I’ve had the nastiest greasy roots. I mean proper crispy hair, it’s grim!

I’ve always washed my hair daily since childhood, but now I’m told I shouldn’t.

Problem is by the end of the day I haven’t washed I look a mess! My fringe looks like a oil slick, it is horrible.

Do I go back to daily washing and just go bald? Or am I missing a trick that everyone else knows and I don’t?

This. Not washing your hair every day is rank and grim

That's an incredibly twatty thing to say. Are all people with afro or textured hair "rank and grim"?

OP, you need L'Oreal Clay shampoo. I have your exact hair type and this is the absolute business for long lasting clean looking hair. Some of us just have greasy looking roots no matter what we do, you can't "break the cycle" it just is.

I have long, fine hair in beautiful condition. I wash twice a week. No more!

Depends on the hair. There is no way washing mine every day would be good for it, and I don't use shampoo (I wash with conditioner)
My hair doesn't smell or look greasy because of the type of hair it is
But someone with fine, short hair might need to wash every day. Each to their own!

reducing how often you wash your hair doesnt make you live longer, or make you any happier, or affect your health in any way.

Do what you want with your own hair

I have psoriasis on my scalp so have to wash my scalp every day and you can't do that without washing hair - my hair is in good condition.

I couldn't not wash my hair every day, I'd feel gross. In the 5 years I've been with DH, I've had 2 days when I didn't wash my hair!

I agree it's probably not that good for it, but on balance, I'm happier with clean hair that's a bit frizzy than I would be with not-clean hair that looked great.

(N.B. I don't think it's gross for anyone else not to shower all day, it just makes me personally feel gross.)

i wash my hair maybe once a week - never gets oily. Do you play/touch your hair alot? Mine is always up in a hair chopstick or tied up. Dry shampoo is super wierd.

It takes a few months for your hair to adjust to a new regime, and it's really horrible in that time. I am also trying to cut down from every day to every other day, and I hate the second day! But I know (from past experience of doing this) that it gets better.

Dry shampoo is brilliant. I wear my hair up the second day, which also helps.

It is true. Washing your hair every day makes it ten times more greasy, and I know that because I used to do it. Now I do it every two or three.
What did really help mine apart from cutting down on the washing was buying Dr organic hemp oil shampoo. No parabens, no sls, etc and it naturally stops grease from forming as soon.
Plus it's super healthy for your body and hair because of the lack of toxins

Quite. God forbid anyone on mumsnet should consider that there might be different people out there with different needs and considerations.

And within this I need to wash my hair every day. I use dry shampoo for the evening if I've washed it in the morning but my hair is mid brown and thin, so the grease just shows through. Plus it's very temperamental so if I don't wash aside from the grease it looks just awful. It works for me, as it's thin it literally takes 5 minutes.

That's an incredibly twatty thing to say. Are all people with afro or textured hair "rank and grim"?

What about dirt, grease, pollution, cooking smells, things that cling to your hair? They don't discriminate depending on what kind of hair you have. Not washing it is grim, you're walking around with dirt in your hair and I think it's gross.

Like I say, I knew a girl once who had very thick curly hair who didn't wash it regularly because of her "hair type". It may have been technically better for her hair, but god she stank.

So you are saying that pretty much everyone who is black or asian stinks are you? You racist twat.

My hair is very fine and greasy but also damaged. It would be greasy by the end of the day usually but I've started to do another quick shampoo after conditioning which really helps. I would still usually wash it every day tbh but I can now last 2-3.

I have a similar problem... I exercise pretty much every day at a very high intensity so my hair is literally soaked through with sweat so I HAVE to wash it (sometimes twice in a day!) But now I feel like because I do that, my hair gets greasy super quickly so I'm completely trapped in this constant hair washing cycle!

My mum only ashes her hair once a week and it's lovely and thick and non-greasy! It's just not fair!

nice - it doesn't get greasy. I don't live in an area where it's mega polluted. I wash it with conditioner probably every 3-4 days. It's incredible shiny and healthy

I wash my hair daily and condition every other day. It's in lovely condition. If I don't, my head gets itchy and my hair looks lank and horrible. I don't feel clean either.

Maybe try some treatments for thinking hair?

Try some logic, racist.

FACT: Black and Asian people will very rarely wash hair daily.
YOUR STATEMENT; anyone who doesn't wash hair daily is "rank and grim and they stink".
ERGO: you stated that black and asian people are rank and grim and they stink

Your words, not mine. Racist, twatty, words.

Not washing hair every day is not an issue. Hair types are different and combined with activity levels and lifestyle will dictate how often is ok. Mine is thick and gets done every other day. Afro hair may need doing less. Very fine greasy hair/if you excercise a lot may need more.

never washing it and doing the no poo thing - that smells. Always. Big difference between 'every other day, or twice a week' and never. The never is the issue

It depends what products you use as well. If you are filling your hair with wax, mousse, spray etc, it may well attract dirt in a way that hair with no product in does not.

Some people strip their hair with a wash, then put loads of product on.

If you need to style your hair with products everyday, then you may well need to wash it more often. Especially if you live in a city.
