Or rather the parents that chose it?

Overheard in the local shop a young girl (8ish) telling her friend that her new baby brother is being called....Kaiser. She wasnt joking.

My daughter made a friend at the park once when out with her dad. She was telling me about her when she came home so I asked her if she knew her name. She replied 'Book'. I was ShockConfused and asked her if she was sure. She was adamant she was called 'Book'! Luckily my son walked into the room at that point and asked what we were talking about. He was at the park too and luckily overheard that her name was actually 'Brooke'. 😂

PlatformNineAndThreeQuarters · 18/09/2017 19:07

My DS is called Fabian, pronounced as 'Fay'at the beginning rather than 'Fab'.

I love his name but after reading threads like this, I always worry that people won't like it or may take the piss out of him behind his back

Well as a member of the Fabian Society I really like it Wink

OSETmum · 18/09/2017 19:08

I don't think it's that bad!

I went to school with a Holly Wood (seriously, why?)

The most out there names for children I've heard recently are Ozzy-Kool, Thye-Deezel (this one was from another forum that I used when ds was a baby but was another poster's real baby) and I do actually know someone who's called their baby Khaleesi Hmm

WhooooAmI24601 · 18/09/2017 19:10

A woman I went to school with years ago called her youngest DS Kaiser. I have to admit I'm not a fan of that name but she said when she told everyone they apparently loved it. Each to their own and all that.

JudgeTinder · 18/09/2017 19:10

We had a Kaiser at my school last year (pronounced Kay-ser) My first class had a 'Storm' in it. A rather apt name as it turned out!

Lovingit81 · 18/09/2017 19:12

Yes YABU to judge, who do you think you are. It's not the worst I've heard. No doubt your name is Joe Boring.

JLo1979 · 18/09/2017 19:12

My cousin had a patient once in the states called La-a. His receptionist asked how you pronounce it, mom's response was "exactly how it's spelled La dash a"! I kid you not. Also one of my aunts primary school students was called Dick Everard(not Richard). Poor boy!

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 18/09/2017 19:14

x2boys · 18/09/2017 19:18

Apparently let the dash not be silent.

Jem55 · 18/09/2017 19:20

There's a Ladasha listed on our company phone directory. She's based in the USA. I can imagine la-a is a myth, but I've worked with at least one ladasha previously. There's a whole slew of la- names - laytoya, lashawna etc. Quite common in the south.

3EyedRaven · 18/09/2017 19:39

I have a friend who is called Khizer, it's an arabic name

maxrayeseth123 · 18/09/2017 19:39

Seriously...who cares what someone you don't know is or isn't calling their son? How nosey and judgmental can you get? You clearly have far too much time on your hands...

3EyedRaven · 18/09/2017 19:43

Shakira...it didn't impress me much
You're thinking of Shania Grin

Katmeifyoucan · 18/09/2017 19:45

If the dc was 8 she could have easily have got the name wrong or you could have misheard or they could be from a different country where our names sound out there to them.

Why would you judge people you don't know? That is odd.

Jessikita · 18/09/2017 19:46

I hate double barrelled names anyway (just personal preference but they remind me of chavs) but the worst I know are 3 girls called Passion-Lola, Angel-Louise and the 2 week old called River-Deedee. Even if they weren't double barrelled and just the first name they're awful.

zeeboo · 18/09/2017 19:46

The name Kai is a shortened form of Kaiser, it's just that in the UK people only use the short form. It's not an unusual name in the USA.

lozzylizzy · 18/09/2017 20:11

My sons little friend thought my daughter was called mayo. She is called Naomi

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 18/09/2017 20:12

People on mumsnet can be so fucking culturally narrow sometimes.

Plenty of people have popped up to say that Kajsa etc is a perfectly normal Scandinavian name. Nobody seems to be letting this fact ruin their fun though.

People think Shakira is an out-there name? Really? Because there was once a pop star called Shakira? Am I missing something?

And then all the usual snobby/veiled racist crap about double-barrelled names or La- names or Jayden or whatever.

Do we think Jacob Rees-Mogg's kids are going to struggle to become judges? Or is that only kids with obviously working-class unusual names, rather than posh unusual names? Wow, if only more poor people would call their kids Ottilie and Hugo, we'd be smashing glass ceilings all over the place. Hmm

Katmeifyoucan · 18/09/2017 20:13

So true NellWilsons so true.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 18/09/2017 20:24

zeeboo I thought Kai was as in the Welsh Cai (pronounced Kye) which comes from the Latin Caius.

No doubt someone will come along soon to put me right Grin

AimeeNoOneTheSamee · 18/09/2017 20:32

I really cringe at the Harley/Logan/Roman boys names and don't like the Lily-Rose/Ellie-Rose/Lily-May girls names. They just feel a bit... common (hides face)
