To change my hairdresser after this?

BulldogFart · 16/09/2017 07:52

Been using local hairdresser for about 3 years. It's a 10 minute walk from my house.

In the times I've been, they have persistently left hair dye all over my face and I've shown them pictures of the colour I want and the result is usually nothing like.

Yesterday I had an appointment for 11.30. I got there, got sat in the chair and showed them a picture of what I wanted (dark brown with caramel highlights). They said that was fine and they set to work. Throughout the appointment I got the feeling that they had squeezed me into an appointment that they didn't really have. One girl put the colour on, they got the apprentice to wash it off and dry it and then a different woman was set to cut it! I even heard them arguining in the back about who was cutting my hair. I ended up feeling quite unwanted there. Then one came out and asked if I actually wanted it cutting!! I didn't get the head massage I normally get, the trained hairdresser didn't even check the colour before asking the apprentice to wash it off, no toner got put on and the end result was just very dark brown hair with no highlights and dye all down the side of my face which won't come off (I'm going to look a twat for days!). I was then practically wrestled out of the chair without anyone even showing me the back of it (I ended up asking to see it!).

When I got home DH said he liked it but later shouted "Mona Lisa Hair Peach" at me.

AIBU to write this off as the nail in the coffin for this salon?

That sounds like my last hairdressers - it's not in the north of England by any chance?

AppleBosom · 16/09/2017 08:38

what the hell is a monalisa hair peach?

IfYouHappenToSee · 16/09/2017 08:39

Why do you need the collective opinion of MN to tell you something that should have been obvious 3 years ago Confused

BulldogFart · 16/09/2017 08:40

Yes it is north England!

OP posts:
Therealslimshady1 · 16/09/2017 08:40

What is a mona lisa hair peach?!

QuimReaper · 16/09/2017 08:41

OP as others have said, you've given them a far more ample chance than they deserved!

I'd cut ties with them and write a letter to the owner telling them exactly why you're withdrawing your business. Detail the bad cuts, with dates if possible. You won't be going back but the information might be instructive to them.

And I want to know what "Mona Lisa Hair Peach" is too!

Jasey does the picture thing apply to colour too? I'm sure most people with pictures are just using them as a jumping-off point, aren't they, and expect the hairdresser to take the lead in explaining how the picture can be appropriated to the person's hair? If people didn't bring in pictures I suspect you'd end up with lots of incomprehensible attempts to explain what they want, "like a flicky floofy bit here and straight at the back but sort of y'know..."

QuimReaper · 16/09/2017 08:42

Gosh Misery I'd love it if it were the same one and you got it just from the OP Grin

ILoveMillhousesDad · 16/09/2017 08:42

Well 'North England' is a pretty fucking big place and the likelihood of them being the same hairdressers, is slim to none.

And wtf is a Mona Lisa hair peach Grin?

Is that you Sharon?

PollyPerky · 16/09/2017 08:44

Is this for real or DM fodder? Shock

You set the bar very low for yourself OP.

I have colour done and before the appt I specify who I want to do it (same person for years.) If she is busy they might ask if it's ok for x y or z to cut it or blow dry it. This is on the phone , making the appt.

When I go, the colourist brings out a colour chart with swatches and I spend a long time talking over what I'd like and what would work, how many foils of each shade etc.

I have never had any colour on my face. A good hairdresser won't even get water on your face when washing your hair!

You've been a fool to put up with this.

64PooLane · 16/09/2017 08:45

OP. You really need to explain about the Mona Lisa Hair Peach.

ThePurpleOneWithTheNut · 16/09/2017 08:47

I take pictures and never even get close to the requested style! Always end up with a basic bob! It's so frustrating

Me too Green. I've tried most hairdressers in my area now. I think most of them are only just about competent veering towards incompetent. Certainly they're not worth the money they charge.

I always smile wryly when I read advice to 'find a good hairdresser and get a good cut'. How? Confused It amazes me that hairdressing is so unregulated. I'd like to see feedback and examples of their recent client's cuts. That would help me decide if anyone is any good at it.

The time I've spent growing out some disaster or other over the years doesn't bear thinking about Hmm

QuimReaper · 16/09/2017 08:48

Ooooh, maybe it is Sharon! Sounds like something Mr S'd say Grin

ScarletForYa · 16/09/2017 08:51

Why did you go back after the first time?

They basically just vandalize your head every time!

Miserylovescompany2 · 16/09/2017 08:52

Is it in a place/town beginning with A? If so - might well be the same place?

Venella · 16/09/2017 08:56

Leaving dye on your face, not listening to you: not good.
But stylist person doing the colour, the apprentice rinsing and someone else cutting isn't unusual or bad service. Might happen if it's very busy or someone is off sick.

Like pp have said: even if they shouldn't leave dye on your face, no need to "look like a twat for days", it is possible to remove it.

I suggest emailing them describing what went wrong and ask them to book you in for a correction ASAP.

And please explain Mona Lisa Hair Peach.

pinkdelight · 16/09/2017 08:56

They sound shit and of course you should find somewhere better - get recommendations or take advantage of new client offers to shop around a bit.

But just for the record, this:

"One girl put the colour on, they got the apprentice to wash it off and dry it and then a different woman was set to cut it!"

Is what happens in a lot of top salons. A colourist does the colour, a stylist cuts it and one of the trainees washes it. They don't argue about it though. Get rid!

ptumbi · 16/09/2017 09:01

'would you be unreasonable to change hairdressers?'

Do you need us to tell you to put one foot in front of another? OF COURSE you can change hairdressers - you are not locked into a contract ended only by death!

ptumbi · 16/09/2017 09:02

But - don't most people take in a photo of how they'd like the hair to look? If not, why are there stacks of hairdressing magazines in the hairdressers? I assumed they were for inspiration, but apparently not...

coddiwomple · 16/09/2017 09:09

people showing pictures of what they want is incredibly annoying. It's usually next to impossible to recreate the exact look on someone else.

That's very silly, you want people to show you what they are talking about. Then you can discuss and explain why that colour, hair shape etc.. won't be the same (different hair colour to start, heavy styling for the photo and so on). It's much clearer if someone show you a photo with a certain length!
Do take photos!

OP, I can't say more than above. You should be happy and bouncy when you leave a hairdresser. Anything else and it's the wrong place!

jaseyraex · 16/09/2017 09:11

QuimReaper I'd say the picture thing applys to people who want that picture and only that picture. If you tell them it won't work right or won't turn out that colour etc they just say but I want the same as that picture that's what I'm paying you for. The ones that aren't interested in hearing the professional opinion! The ones that want it that colour right there that day are the worst though. You tell them it will take a few sessions and it's "no I want to leave here with my hair that colour today" 🙄

Much prefer people to come in and ask to look through styles we have in books or magazines ourselves. Anyone worth their salt will give you a pre appointment to discuss the style or colour you're after and let you know how easy it will be or if it will work on your hair!

Fanciedachange17 · 16/09/2017 09:20

Makes me wonder how the non hairdressing public know a good cut from a bad? Some lucky people look fabulous however their hair looks whilst others can spend a fortune and still look as rough as a badgers armpit.
The other thing that gets me is the reverence given to beauticians who are usually (not always!) young girls without a braincell between them who just happen to wear a white coat. Really bright professional women are putty in their hands taking everything they say as gospel.

I remember being in one hairdressing salon where these little girls were required to up-sell products. One was persistent in extolling the virtues of this shampoo - "look it's got Aqua in it". Bloody fool!

MonaLisaHairPeach · 16/09/2017 09:20

I don't see what your husband did wrong OP Hmm

The hairdressers though - why on earth have you continued going to them Confused

Crowdie · 16/09/2017 09:22

YABU for taking 3 years to decide it's a shit hairdressers.

I too wonder if you're Sharon.

Gorgosparta · 16/09/2017 09:22

Makes me wonder how the non hairdressing public know a good cut from a bad?

I found mine by asking people i knew whose hair i liked. 2 went to a particular hairdresser and i tried it. Been going there 3 years now.

hmmwhatatodo · 16/09/2017 09:25

I really want someone to shout Mona Lisa Hair Peach at me today.
