DS had his haircut just before he started secondary school. In the uniform rules, it just saying no "extreme hairstyles" does not give any kind of description as to what those may be. Bugger me, he goes in with a perfect uniform, a nice smart haircut and is told it's a no!!! They have said that he is to be in isolation until it grows to an acceptable length Hmm they didn't say what would be classed as extreme!!!!!!!!

I don't think this haircut has anything remotely to do with why kids from non-wealthy families don't end up as doctors or lawyers

Not intrinsically, no. However if those children are at the receiving end of harsh, disproportionate, isolationary treatment, with no hope of swift resolution, for having the haircut, you could see how the quality of their education could be detrimentally effected.

Yes. And it reinforces this silly class war crap.

Good points, makeourfuture, and interesting to hear from someone who has experienced a different culture.

I think that's a really good point, makeour. I also think that this kind of magical thinking is what lies behind the whole concept of uniform. Rather than tackle structural and societal inequalities, we just get our kids to dress as though they're at Eton. Because that'll make sure they all end up at Oxford.

It's the same as the bullshit that people trot out about uniform being a leveller. When in fact regardless of how many bloody blazers someone on a low income is required to fork out for in order that their kids will be supposedly levelled, their kids will still be from a low income family. Just one that now has £50 less money now than they had before.

It's like we recognise the issues of inequality etc but instead of doing something about it we piss around with ties and haircuts. And that's what makes the entire farce so annoying - it's not about the haircut; it's about the ridiculous attitudes to social mobility that lie behind it and other uniform nonsense.

Maybe OPs child could wear a wig for the time until the hair grows back.

Canadian here. I've been salaciously reading this tread since the beginning, with some serious culture shock. Now that Flowerpot has backed out, and is done endlessly repeating and distracting the conversation, I see the thread of actual discussion of real issues reemerging. The recent posts by makeourown and AnneGrommit seem to pinpoint the real implications and problems how I see them. I also see the logic in FontSnob's posts.

I have to say that as many concerns I have with my own Governments funding of education, and my local school districts decisions and policies over the years, I am so grateful to have my children in schools where the parents, teachers and administration, for the most part, band together as a community and want the best in both not only in education, but also in health, social and emotional well-being.

Also, over the past decade, our schools have been trending away from cookie cutter/robot style of teaching and testing. To the point that our province has mandated a new curriculum, started this year, that involves focusing on each individuals interests, strengths, etc. (Although how our incredible teachers are able to pull it off with the ridiculous lack of time, funding or support, I have yet to figure out... based on the experiences of my teacher friends, it's simply miracle and heart that are getting them by).

As for uniform, in my city/school district, there are 46 public schools, plus 10 private (ie. religious). Of the public schools, there are 4 that are uniform, those being the "traditional" (for those who prefer the old cookie cutter system), and are choice only, not mandated by catchment. Even if the private schools, only 2, (I believe), use uniforms. And none of our uniformed schools have hair rules. All styles and colours, (aside from the obvious, like swear words dyed/shaved) are accepted, and clothing rules are very basic, ie. no bellies showing.

Yay Canada!

I think so Smile

I re-read my post... wish I could do some heavy editing, lol... I hate when I think (and re-organize) faster than my thumbs can type 😝 Errors galore!
