Last time I bought an item of clothing in there was 2005.I go in there regularly just to have a laugh at their clothes now! EVERYTHING is covered in lace, sequins, buttons, applique or some such shitty garnish.Nothing whatsoever one would want to buy.Cheap crap you could buy in primark for a quarter of the price, flimsy fabrics.Who the hell are their fashion buyers? Are they blind?Even my mother and grandmother think their clothes are frumpy and do not shop there anymore. How much longer do they think they can get away with the garbage they stock? The shops look like ghost towns, staff are unmotivated. They have no idea who they are targeting.Sainsburys Tu,or Tesco F&F have better clothing than they do.They understand their target buyers may not have rake thin toned upper arms, may have big tummys and crepey chests and have clothes to suit. FFS M&S!!!!Get your act together or you will go the same way as BHS,Woolies etc....And you know what?We wouldnt even care!!!

NOT fail !! Flourish!

opinionatedfreak · 14/09/2017 23:48

Cashmere isn't nearly such good quality as it used to be. But then boden's is crap too now.

I wait for the really expensive stuff to go on sale - brora, Johnstons, Peal.

DeeElle88 · 14/09/2017 23:48

Percy pigs...foam lobsters (because foam shrimps are for peasants lol) and the Dine in for 10 deals...that's all I go in for

ILoveScrabble · 14/09/2017 23:49

Words fail me...

No Nettle.
That plant looksfunny compared to the horro these sleeves invoke. I can imagine a really dark secret behind them that has something to with never dying and being exceptionally nauseating. Grin

Valentine2 · 14/09/2017 23:53

ilovescrabble
I dare you to open their Red collection that's apparently on trend they think. Go on. Do that. You will die a thousand deaths.

ILoveScrabble · 14/09/2017 23:55

Apparently they are low on stock online for this dress. So you better be quick if you want one.

BTW I'm actually all for fun and quickly clothing. I think it's great if people enjoy wearing whatever it they want to wear but I just don't see these types of clothes in a high street department store like Marks.

Valentine2 · 14/09/2017 23:56

Whoa Nettle! I got it! The "never dying" but comes from my despair that even if I buy the colour that I want and need in any of these frilly dresses anywhere, there is no way I could alter it into something nice. So they can't "die" basically.
Geddit?

Nettletheelf · 15/09/2017 00:00

Immortal frocks. They could be a force for good though. Like Highlander.

ILoveScrabble · 15/09/2017 00:01

I've been looking through the collections occasionally being horrified with the uglyness but ..... I'm also seeing things that I quite like. There are a couple of nice looking coats which are most reasonable and I've seen some nice shoes. 😂😂😂

TableMirror · 15/09/2017 00:04

I don't get the food section at all, it's all ready meals and processed crap.

TableMirror · 15/09/2017 00:05

Also their furniture, it's all veneer and the display furniture is always badly damaged, not a great advert.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/09/2017 00:08

I've thought for ages that 99% of their buyers need sacking. I'm sure they wouldn't be seen dead in most of the stuff they think good enough for M&S shoppers.
Much of their summer linen is still good - not plastered with the fussy 'bits' M&S is so tragically fond of, but I rarely see anything else any more. Nasty cheap looking fabrics in horrible colours and patterns - are you listening, M&S? Your buyers need sacking!

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 15/09/2017 03:20

School uniforms and jeans/trousers here. Theoretically underwear, but I haven't upgraded mine for a few years so they've not had much out of me since my size settled after my last baby (he's at school...)

Now that my short legs are supposed to have had a growth spurt of a couple of inches, that reduces the point in going to M&S for trousers. My most recent purchases are unworn and waiting for me to work out how to thread my sewing machine. Their only saving grace is they can accommodate my ample behind and have a high enough waist to tuck the CS overhang in.

I don't even bother looking at tops as their size 8s are that humongous, I may as well overlooking at tents for back packing.

They should concentrate on a core market of reliable, classic staples keeping them consistent as they can be hard to find in other fashion stores. Then well chosen "fashion" pieces. For the last decade, my grandma has complained that they are frumpy, and she's drawing close to being an octogenarian!

Pugfather · 15/09/2017 03:49

The clothes quality is so downhill .Used to be the place for socks ,shirts and pants. Not purchased men's clothes since 1998.Food is dire now not a patch on its 80s hey day and the wine is vile regardless of price point. At best I purchase birthday cards that's it ,an no I don't want a chuffin sparks card !

Walking in the store it just smells of nylon and has what I would call dodgy lurid rags appealing to who ? A person who has lost the sense of synthetic versus cotton. In oh so happy I've just passed the menopause red shoes and elasticated jeans. My mother is in that bracket but has style and does not dress in that tat.Even the children's clothes for my niece are a no go in style and mainly quality. Not to forget the older man who wants beige slacks and a cruddy quality Panama hat and to smell of wood spice yuk

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 15/09/2017 04:19

Oh yeah, I forgot about their knickers
And Belgium chocolate flapjack is yum

They still need to up their game on adult clothing and the homeware department is sooo old fashioned.

Elllicam · 15/09/2017 04:30

I agree the clothing quality is dire. I bought (what I thought was) a really nice pair of 3/4 length jeans for the summer. After a week they split at the bum. They weren't tight or anything, just randomly split. I took them back and got another pair. They then split in exactly the same place. When I took them back the woman at the till said it was my fault for keeping my phone in my back pocket! It wasn't even anywhere near the pocket! She did give me a refund along with some very grumpy looks though.

Firefries · 15/09/2017 04:40

I agree. There clothes at tatty and expensive too.

Firefries · 15/09/2017 04:40

"Their"

verysleepymum · 15/09/2017 04:41

They do short leg skinny jeans which are really nice. Great for us under average sized! I no longer have to hem jeans whoop!

daisychain01 · 15/09/2017 05:09
  • Chinos in 3 colours £20 each, nice quality
  • Sports bras could be better - too many different options none of which fit me. They cater well if your 34FF but what about me - small in the boob dept.
  • Home stuff is great £6 mugs lovely quality, beautiful wall clock £30
  • Work trousers are brilliant only £19 StayNew finish.
  • 'Staple' clothes e.g. long sleeved T Shirts are good
  • Per Una is a travesty. Vile. They've absolutely murdered that brand, when George Davis owned the brand the styles were gorgeous all Italian chique and beautiful imaginative choice of materials. Now, like curtains. I'd rather wear an M&S duvet cover.
  • Sparks card, generally a car crash BUT the staff have been retrained and they now tell me what my special offers are, and I was able to get £7 off the Work trousers I mentioned above plus £1.90 off a brow pencil, so Star for that.
HeteronormativeHaybales · 15/09/2017 06:19

I'm a shortarse and get skinny jeans/leggings/jeggings from M&S. Very reasonably priced, I haven't had a problem with the quality yet, and short lengths, which fit me well, are always in stock. Also good for baby basics (vests and sleepsuits). Less enamoured of the older children's clothes, though the school stuff has been useful for my dses for playing/singing in ensembles (non-uniform country so don't need it as uniform, but formal clothes here tend to be expensive so very lucky M&S delivers).

Tops, tunics, dresses etc. for me = total washout. Can't remember the last time I even saw something I liked in that way.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 15/09/2017 06:21

Oh, they do trousers that fit my similarly shortarse dh. And decent simple basics for him to wear to work (environment that needs not formal, but smartish, neutral and hardwearing clothing).

wtffgs · 15/09/2017 06:23

Stop fucking making them, and go back to making nice clothes that don't look like Margot Leadbetter on a meth binge.

Nice one SaucyJack! Grin

MiniAlphaBravo · 15/09/2017 06:30

Baby clothes are quite nice and good quality. Bit expensive but eg vests are worth it.

Agree about the women's clothes being awful though. That yellow dress!!!
