To think weekly shop prices are outrageous?

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and was a bit surprised by the prices. We buy nearly the same items every week and whilst I expect some variation, some of the prices had me Shock Own brand hummous is usually £1, this week was £1.50. Gallia melon always £1 each, now also £1.50. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it Brexit now impacting the retailer and theyre no longer absorbing the change?

I was Hmm yesterday but read today that John Lewis has had profits halve due to Brexit and not yet passing the change on to customers.

Love rocket especially on pizza.

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 21:54

Chester
THe devaluation would NOT have happened without the stupid vote
and it WILL get worse
when the vote gets real

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 15/09/2017 21:56

I love rocket but hate hummus . Waste of good six ingredients as far as I'm concerned.

BR62Y · 15/09/2017 22:06

Porridge is your friend! Cheap as chips....(cheaper than frozen ones actually)

Bolshybookworm · 15/09/2017 22:16

I have noticed that oats have gone up recently as well. When was the last time you saw a bag of basics/essential oats in the supermarket? Can't get them in Sainsburies or Morrisons anymore.

Doramaybe · 15/09/2017 22:37

OK some of you like rocket, but I really don't get it, so anyway.

Slithery slimy little leaves that get stuck in your throat. Ah well each to their own.

QuentinSummers · 15/09/2017 22:41

If you peel the satsumas before putting them in the bag you can get the price down. Pop them in the fridge they're okay for a few days and freeze any you want longer than that. I won't pay for the useless peel.
What. That is barking. Who stands in a supermarket peeling the satsumas before buying them? And also what a cheek. Overhead costs are involved in putting the satsumas on the shelf that you aren't paying, it's basically theft

Doramaybe · 15/09/2017 22:47

OK save a penny by peeling your satsumas.

Maybe you would save more by not buying them and buying a multivitamin tab instead.

NameChanger22 · 16/09/2017 09:23

Lots of places aren't selling basic ranges and their cheapest alternatives anymore. Aldi used to sell toothpaste for 30p a tube, now you have to spend 90p.

Greenbucket · 16/09/2017 10:45

Yes loads of the basics range in sainsburys has gone.

Greenbucket · 16/09/2017 10:46

How fucking rude. Where do you put the peel? I agree with the pp, buy a multivitamin instead.

SandSnakeOfDorne · 16/09/2017 11:15

I assumed the satsuma post was a joke. I mean, no one would actually do that would they? The person at the checkout would notice they were weighing skinned satsumas.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/09/2017 12:13

You'd have to go self-service if you were actually were a CF shopper like that!

QueSera · 16/09/2017 13:02

I have actually pretty much stopped shopping at Sainsburys because of their prices!

Ta1kinPeece · 16/09/2017 14:28

Where do you go instead ?

Price is not everything
Cheap food often is a result of processing that we'd rather did not exist

Greenbucket · 16/09/2017 14:31

I shop around. We have one freezer meal a week. We grow stuff. Prices are horrendous.

PinkCrystal · 16/09/2017 14:32

I agree. People were warned re brexit ..

AccrualIntentions · 16/09/2017 14:33

I'd already gone from Sainsbury's to Asda, and the prices there are creeping up too. I shop online and buy mostly the same items too, and I now find I'm paying in Asda about what I was a year ago in Sainsbury's. Aldi and Lidl are too inconvenient so I'll just have to suck it up and plan meals better, but it's frustrating - especially the fact that some of the price inflation has been caused by the devaluation of the £ since 23 June 2016.

Greenbucket · 16/09/2017 14:34

Well if food prices were artificially low then I don't mind them rising if it means suppliers are getting paid properly. I suspect a lot of it is the supermarket just whacking up the prices and blaming Brexit. It will be interesting to see their profits. We all saw that their profits fell hugely last year. I think they are trying to claw it back.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/09/2017 16:38

I've filled comparative baskets online on the Sainsbury's, Asda and Tesco websites and there really is very little difference in price for the type of things I buy. The quality difference between Sainsbury's and Asda is worth paying an extra couple of quid for, I think.

It clearly depends on what you're buying as to how much difference there actually is between shops.

woodhill · 16/09/2017 17:05

Went to Asda today, not sure. Still spent a lot

pointythings · 16/09/2017 17:58

My food shop has gone down a lot because DD1 has gone vegetarian. This means DD2 and I tend to eat vegi too - we love it. When we do eat meat, it's less and better. DH is still a carnivore but doesn't eat much.

We've also got really good at leftovers.

Prices have definitely gone up though and we have changed our shopping habits. And this will all get much, much worse after Brexit - especially the no deal Brexit we appear to be heading for.

user1481838270 · 16/09/2017 20:17

Any family who isn't wealthy would be well advised to start considering major changes. A collapse is the pound and the introduction of tariffs will mean food prices will continue to rise considerably in the foreseeable future.

Going vegetarian is certainly a good option.

Ta1kinPeece · 16/09/2017 20:23

Going vegetarian is certainly a good option.
Not really.
British produced free range meat is currently dearer than the imported stuff, but its cost base will hardly be affected by Brexit
AND
there are large areas of the UK that are only viable for livestock farming

cheap cuts of UK raised meat and hearty stews will be the way to go

NewDaddie · 16/09/2017 20:28

YABU

Prices need to go up because people won't ever accept wage cuts. So we play economic games instead. Brexit, exchange rates, inflation etc etc.

It'll get worse before it gets better, if it ever gets better.
