To think weekly shop prices are outrageous?

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and was a bit surprised by the prices. We buy nearly the same items every week and whilst I expect some variation, some of the prices had me Shock Own brand hummous is usually £1, this week was £1.50. Gallia melon always £1 each, now also £1.50. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it Brexit now impacting the retailer and theyre no longer absorbing the change?

I was Hmm yesterday but read today that John Lewis has had profits halve due to Brexit and not yet passing the change on to customers.

Florida supermarkets have also become expensive apparently.

Agree about Sainsbury's but I like it better than Tesco

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2017 20:33

DS's MN lunchboxes were the stuff of legend in his class, maddie. Everyone wanted to taste his sandwiches. Sometimes the crudités came home, but not often.

SandSnakeOfDorne · 15/09/2017 20:38

Yeah we can all make our own humus. But we don't fucking want to. And lol at the ingredients list with olive oil and lemon, as though we'll all be living it large on the extra virgin once we've taken back control of Aberdeen's vast olive fields.

Anatidae · 15/09/2017 20:39

If you are paying £5 for ordinary shampoo you are being robbed - try a cheap shop such as Lidl, Rusta, Dollar store or Överskottsbolaget

None of those anywhere near us. Biggest thing for miles is an ica nära

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 20:43

chardonnay
define Theresa Mays "mates"

anatidae
I do not want cheap - I want good
I want provenance
I want reliable supply chains that do not involve slave labour and environmental destruction
and sadly Brexit will put the kibosh on all the EU rules that we have become used to

CaptainBrickbeard · 15/09/2017 20:49

It is very depressing and I do feel apprehensive about the future, but it does make me increasingly believe that Brexit might not happen. That tiny majority will crumble in the face of such a massive decline in living standards. Very few people are so ideologically committed that they are prepared to accept this.

greatminds · 15/09/2017 20:49

Straying off subject.. but it is to do with food waste. I am currently making myself some salad. The Sainsbury's rocket looks fine, but has a USE by date of the 12th and specifically says on the back eat within 48 hours of opening and do not eat after use by date.

Scared to eat it now and may chuck it - wasting food Confused

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 15/09/2017 20:54

May, Davies, Boris, all mates because they have to stick together. Why are you asking?

Greatminds, now, I'm not one to recommend Lidl and allotments, but rocket is the easiest thing to grow. Even I can, and do, manage.

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 20:54

greatminds
use your great mind
how does it smell ?
does is smell of rocket?
are the leaves still firm?

Those labels are to make money for supermarkest
FFS 12 day "sell by" dates on "12 month aged" cheddar - do the maths

if it smells good, looks good, feels good - eat it
if not, compost

simple

greatminds · 15/09/2017 20:57

I use to know a guy who dealt with the fresh produce part of Tesco and he said something about pre prepared veg/salad was a high risk for food poisoning - can't remember exactly the reasons.

I feel bad, I chucked the rocket. Why are tomatoes BEST before but Rocket USE before?

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 21:01

greatminds
prepared salad is foul stuff - a ll chlorine washed and nitrogen stored
BUT
the sticker is not the issue
is the food good using your senses or not ....

tomatoes should never go in a fridge after all

phoenix1973 · 15/09/2017 21:15

Buy own brands, not domestos, colemans etc.
Strawberries are oos now so will not only cost more, but will not taste so good.
We are lucky to have such a massive choice all year round....yes it will be expensive.
Some frozen fruits are lovely and reasonably priced.
Buy toiletries from wilko/savers/bodycare/aldi/lidl. Still cheap.
Get dried tinned goods, sauces, packets, cereals from b&m or home bargains.
I shop at aldi and the only thing i bulk buy in Sainsbury's is their reduced salt marmite copy. Not that cheap but its good.
The supermarkets are crafty so youve always got to be changing your habits.

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2017 21:20

Thank you TalkingPeace. If it doesn't smell ok, don't eat it, put it in the composting.

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2017 21:24

Six ingredients, SandSnake, none expensive. If you don't have/make time to feed your DC properly, who will?

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2017 21:27

Rapeseed oil is a good healthy alternative. I think rape grows in Aberdeenshire but may be wrong.

OCSockOrphanage · 15/09/2017 21:29

Other legumes are also a possibility?

SandSnakeOfDorne · 15/09/2017 21:32

I... I can't even tell if you're joking OC. Is this a serious argument now? Brexit will force people to feed their kids properly?

(The version I make only has 5 ingredients, lemon juice irritates the baby's skin).

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/09/2017 21:34

OCSockOrphanage But Hummus itself isn't expensive, and is made of the exact same ingredients? Your saving a hardly anything, I'm surprised you're buying the tahini though, you know you can just grind your own sesame seeds, and then you don't need to buy a whole jar?

Doramaybe · 15/09/2017 21:38

I know it's Friday night, and wine o'clock is well and truly past by now, but honestly who in the name of what likes rocket?

It tastes of nothing and it catches in your throat. Forget it. Yuk. I hate it with a passion.

But it's fashionable isn't it. Just like smashed fkn avocado on toast instead of gorgeous baked beans.

We need to get back to our roots here!

Ta1kinPeece · 15/09/2017 21:42

dora
I love rocket, but it grows like a weed in my polytunnel Grin

sirfredfredgeorge · 15/09/2017 21:45

We need to get back to our roots here!

What Carrots, Pototoes, Swedes and stuff, nice and all, but not really a salad?

Chestervase1 · 15/09/2017 21:45

I hate rocket too, it gets stuck in my throats and chokes me. Why is everyone blaming brexit, it hasn't happened yet so why the price rises already. We don't know that the currency rate would have stayed stable with all that is going on.

ItsNachoCheese · 15/09/2017 21:47

My local milkman has had to put his prices up due to the dairy crisis

missiondecision · 15/09/2017 21:50

Shop seasonally and as far away from Sainsbury's as possible if you want to save money on your food shop.

BewareOfDragons · 15/09/2017 21:51

Tesco has raised its prices on LOADS of things across the story over the past 2 months. Came back from holidays and have been shocked at the increases at so many things I normally buy. Going to have to do some more basic top ups at Aldi or Lidl...
