To think weekly shop prices are outrageous?

I was in Sainsbury's yesterday and was a bit surprised by the prices. We buy nearly the same items every week and whilst I expect some variation, some of the prices had me Shock Own brand hummous is usually £1, this week was £1.50. Gallia melon always £1 each, now also £1.50. Has anyone else noticed this? Is it Brexit now impacting the retailer and theyre no longer absorbing the change?

I was Hmm yesterday but read today that John Lewis has had profits halve due to Brexit and not yet passing the change on to customers.

US students have been managing to balance full-time studying with twenty hours work for a long time.
Link please
as none of the many, many, many US college students I know / am related to have ever worked 20 hour weeks during term time.

In fact I suspect Boston could not cope with that number of young people wanting to work that many hours, nor could San Francisco.

Sprinklestar · 17/09/2017 17:14

YABU. I live on the east coast of the USA. We moved here 6 years ago. Every time I'm back in the UK I'm amazed at just how cheap food is. Some prices are lower now than when we left. I've just paid $7 for a tiny punnet of raspberries and $6 for 12 clementines. (This was not in Wholefoods!)

Kursk · 17/09/2017 17:34

Sprinklestar

Where are you, since moving to Maine we have found it soo much cheaper

SleepFreeZone · 17/09/2017 17:49

TheElementsSong did the posh oats taste better than poor persons oats?

OCSockOrphanage · 17/09/2017 18:14

Back in my youth, long long ago, students did do agricultural work. If that was what paid money, that was what you did.

Ta1kinPeece · 17/09/2017 18:15

but not in term time ....
the kibbutz / grape picking / orange picking was in the summer break in warm countries

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 17/09/2017 18:17

I worked throughout uni and I think most of the jobs I did are either now non-existent because of technology or now done by people as their living job on zero hours contracts.

TheElementsSong · 17/09/2017 18:20

did the posh oats taste better than poor persons oats?

Haha Sleep, they just tasted like common-or-garden oats. Damn, maybe I should have cooked them in posh gold-top milk? Grin

thecatfromjapan · 17/09/2017 19:35

I didn't have to pay a penny for my university education and nor did my parents. Nor did I work. I feel sad that some young people will have to pay and work. It will affect what sort of degree they get. And it's not fair because some young people will leave with no debt and won't have to work. That's inequality.

thecatfromjapan · 17/09/2017 19:40

Cheaper oats can be a little like dust - and take longer to cook. I'm not sure there's that much of a difference though.

We've started cutting back (and doing a bit of hoarding!). We're also eating more vegetarian meals.

BelleBeauty1 · 17/09/2017 19:46

My degree has a 40 hour placement and all the studying. We still had lots of people working on top. I would've done, but I have 3 young children.

How on earth do people go to uni and not work? How could they afford it? Confused

SunshineAndSmile · 17/09/2017 19:50

Yes it is true that some prices have gone up. It's more important than ever to shop around if possible and not just stick to being loyal to one brand or supermarket. Shopping online is amazing for budgeting and it's also great to avoid the temptation. People also need to shop in season. Buying strawberries or other fruit and veg in September will always be more expensive than the summer. There was a time that summer was the only time these things were available.

SandSnakeOfDorne · 17/09/2017 19:55

I went to university in CA and many, many people worked those hours. I'm pretty sure for many of them it was because of the student loan requirement, but many people had to work to afford to live. I worked 16 hours a week. Not that I'm suggesting this is a great thing, I just don't think the Conservatives would have a problem with making working a requirement for student loans.

Ta1kinPeece · 17/09/2017 19:56

sandsnake
the multiple of anecdote is not data.
A link to that loan requirement please

BelleBeauty1 · 17/09/2017 19:59

I know very few people who didn't work during uni. Various people in south west, midlands, the north and scotland.

Only seems to happen on MN world Grin

Ta1kinPeece · 17/09/2017 20:04

TBH when I was at Uni nobody I knew worked in term time (other than in the University)
but most worked in the holidays
(I didn't and several other friends did not for various reasons)
BUT
that was in the days of grants etc Grin

CallMeDollFace · 17/09/2017 20:05

The food is so cheap here because the producers get absolutely screwed.

And yet I see so much negativity about the agriculture industry.

We all eat food. But the vast majority of us don't want to grow/make it ourselves OR pay for somebody else to do that for us.

The mind boggles.

But farmers keep voting Tory and voted for Brexit
they get little sympathy from me

Farmers supported the abolition of the Milk Marketing board by the Tories - and they are the biggest losers

Farmers voted for Brexit and they will be some of the biggest losers

Farmers move cattle around in breach of TB rules, expect badgers to be shot and in the end are the biggest losers

sod all sympathy from me I'm afraid

SandSnakeOfDorne · 17/09/2017 20:15

Grin Your post was entirely anecdote.

You have stated that its a requirement of US student loans to work at least 20 hours per week
a couple of us have said that is bilge
prove it with a link please

mydogisthebest · 17/09/2017 20:21

Ironingmountain, yes both my parents worked but in low paid jobs. I don't know the full details of their financial situation but I do know they struggled a lot. We only ever had 3 holidays, all cheap ones in the UK. They didn't run a car or smoke or ever drink.

I know people are going to have to work to 68 or older but they know that and also know that they really need to have a private pension. No one that I worked with at age 17, 18, 19, 20 or even older had a private pension and I never worked for any company that had a pension scheme.

SandSnakeOfDorne · 17/09/2017 20:22

I'm not bloody googling for you. Are you a man by any chance? Search work study programs and consider the possibility that states have different rules and your social circle may not be a full reflection of the diversity of US experience.

CallMeDollFace · 17/09/2017 20:24

Ta1kin

Sweeping generalisation much???

Ta1kinPeece · 17/09/2017 20:25

my social circle ODFOD
You made an assertion that students have to work.
You are clearly unwilling / unable to back it up
I shall therefore disregard it as false

SandSnakeOfDorne · 17/09/2017 20:27

I think I can live with you disregarding it Grin. If you're interested google work study programs.
