Knickers cover bottoms. Are knickers now so unseemly that girls need to wear a second layer in case A MAN should see a glimpse of white elasticated pants? Are they fuck.

OP posts:
SingingMySong · 12/09/2017 20:01

We had big grey or blue "school pants" to wear on top of our actual pants in my school, from age 5 I imagine.

Amanduh · 12/09/2017 20:01

Oh don't be so ridiculous. Girls aren't being told to wear them. How idiotic.
They ARE perfect for under dresses though, if your girls just don't fancy showing their knickers off, because they don't want to.
Or they do sports.
Or they want to.
Yab absolutely ridiculous

SingingMySong · 12/09/2017 20:02

... ironically my mum thought they were desperately old fashioned.

minisoksmakehardwork · 12/09/2017 20:02

And dd1 has, for the past 2.5 years chosen to wear a brownie skort. This is the single most perfect item of clothing for her. It allows her to wear a 'skirt' while not flashing her underwear to all and sundry while doing various energetic brownie activities or sitting cross legged round a campfire/in a pow wow. Teamed with tights for warmth in colder weather and socks when it is warmer. Perhaps culottes and the like need to make a comeback instead?

LightDrizzle · 12/09/2017 20:04

I can't believe nobody has referenced the upskirting trend in schools. I'm guessing these might be in response.
The name is dreadful but I suppose my preferred option of "Fuck-off You Pervy Wankstain Pants" is not very M&S. There must be a middle ground.

Sara107 · 12/09/2017 20:05

Why do girls not simply wear shorts for activities such as netball, instead of tiny skirts that expose your knickers at every lunge? That to me is the root of the problem - that the clothes themselves are sexist and need something extra to make them fit for purpose. DD (7) has come back from school this week describing some sort of PE skirt with built in shorts that some of the girls have brought in. Apparently the head teacher asked to have a look at them and said they might make them part of the uniform. What on earth is wrong with shorts, why do they need an overskirt??? It's like those swimming costumes that used to have a skirt bit!!!

GreenTulips · 12/09/2017 20:07

Skorts are available in Asda

Surely this gives it's a choice and they chose to wear them

DDs asked for them and got them

Not a big deal

If no ones looking how come you've all noticed?

Subtlecheese · 12/09/2017 20:07

You can buy culottes or shorts. I suppose these are for schools (or lunchtime supervisors) that wont allow girls to wear anything other than skirts and then want to moan about girls underwear being visible.

minisoksmakehardwork · 12/09/2017 20:09

Because @Sara107, girls like my dd want to be feminine and practical in the same stroke. Nothing says 'woman' like a dress or a skirt. Why should they be forced into trousers and shorts if they don't want to?

Or maybe it just hides a camel toe .

Chestervase1 · 12/09/2017 20:09

Am I missing something? What's wrong with knickers. These are not being marketed as PE wear but modesty wear under normal clothing. Is it for their modesty or because people may get offended by little girls I really don't understand.

grannytomine · 12/09/2017 20:11

Years ago it was navy blue or bottle green school knickers over your own white ones, there didn't seem to be any other colours then, mind you I swear the world was in black and white in the 1950s with just the odd flash of colour.

Mycarsmellsoflavender · 12/09/2017 20:12

DD sometimes wears cycling shorts under her summer dress so that she can do cartwheels without flashing her skimpy knickers to everyone. I don't see the problem, OP.

GirlsWhoWearGlasses · 12/09/2017 20:12

My DD has something like this. She doesn't want to wear trousers on PE days, because she doesn't want to show her knickers when she's getting changed. Wearing shorts under her skirt means she can play unselfconsciously and can feel comfortable getting changed for PE.

QueSera · 12/09/2017 20:13

Seriously? Showing your pants in a playground makes you vulnerable and exposed? We're talking about small children here. Doing what small children have always done in playgrounds.

OP - yes definitely, i totally stand by what i said. Why should girls of any age have to show their underwear on full display whilst playing in public, and be expected to be totally comfortable about it - any more than you or i should be expected to do so?

Branleuse · 12/09/2017 20:17

I dont think little girls shoukd have to wear them, but i dont see whats wrong with being ableto wear them if you want. I quite often wear little shorts under certain summer dresses

mygorgeousmilo · 12/09/2017 20:20

I don't have girls, but ermm, was a girl. Went to non uniform school and every pic of me as a kid I'm wearing either some funky shorts, a skort, or dress with leggings. Was always upside down on monkey bars, did sports etc and climbed loads. When I take my boys to the park after school, I'm often taken aback when I see girls in uniform dresses hanging and climbing and inadvertently showing their underwear. I'm not a prude or a weirdo. It's not about boys looking, or that there might be perverts or any of that, it's standard public modesty. People all around us don't usually show their underwear, and so surely a little girl feels slightly exposed if wearing just knickers with a dress but wants to enjoy sport or join in at the playground? I don't think it's fair that they have those two crappy choices set out by the school - wear a dress and show your knickers if you dare to be active, or don't be as active as boys, who are wearing comfortable and appropriate clothing. I hope that if I had a girl that I would stand up to the school or LA and demand that she could wear shorts and a polo and boots if she wanted. That's another ridiculous thing, the enforced wearing of patent Mary Janes all year at some schools near me! My boys are already in autumn boots with lovely flexible soles. I don't know if it's some sinister nationwide conspiracy to keep girls in their supposed demure place, or if I'm overthinking it.

ViserionTheDragon · 12/09/2017 20:22

I think they are good for two reasons: extra protection for girls during that time of the month (especially while doing PE) and also against 'upskirting' photos which is becomming increasingly prevalent in today's society Blush.

clippityclock · 12/09/2017 20:37

I just don't want to see anyones pants either male or female. Wish boys would wear them while wearing those bloody stupid skin tight jeans pulled down below their arses!

TakeMe2Insanity · 12/09/2017 20:42

The reality is under garments have changed. Women and girls no longer wear slips and full coverage knickers. Knickers are generally tiny compared to when I was a child in 80s. At one point the boys fixation was to lift girls skirts in secondary school. We nearly all wore tights or shorts underneath our skirts until the threat of exposure had passed. Nobody wants their underwear flashed in public barring 'celebs'. If a fictional daughter came and asked for these I would have no problem in buying them. Similarly I can see a market in the uni age girls.

lozzylizzy · 12/09/2017 20:46

We used to do pe in vest and pants.....

GlitterGlue · 12/09/2017 20:54

You know what would be even better at dealing with upskirting than wearing extra knickers? If upskirting could actually be dealt with properly by the police/courts.

OP posts:
DioneTheDiabolist · 12/09/2017 21:48

Up skirting can't be dealt with properly by the police and courts because it isn't illegal.Sad Nor is taking photos in a public place such as a park where girls play.

newtlover · 12/09/2017 21:57

errr...pretty sure there is a law against taking an intimate photo of someone without their consent

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 12/09/2017 22:02

Nope new

Upskirting isn't illegal

There was a court case a few weeks ago

GlitterGlue · 12/09/2017 22:05

I know it's not illegal. It bloody well should be though.
