Knickers cover bottoms. Are knickers now so unseemly that girls need to wear a second layer in case A MAN should see a glimpse of white elasticated pants? Are they fuck.

FoxesSitOnBoxes · 12/09/2017 19:29

It's ftricky because we are giving young girls very mixed messages by telling them that their pants are private but also saying that it's wrong to try to hide them.
I don't know what the answer is

GlitterGlue · 12/09/2017 19:29

I'm getting het up because it feels like the opposite of a choice. This is what girls should wear to preserve their modesty, and if they don't...

Where on earth did they come from? When did they stop being something you wore because your netball skirt didn't remotely cover your arse and become something that infants needed to wear?

I always thought a gymslip was a sort of light pinafore for PE. Confused Only ever encountered the word in Enid Blyton and similar so lengthy descriptions weren't forthcoming.

Doramaybe · 12/09/2017 19:30

Oh FFS.

They are a good thing, maybe the name should be changed to something else, but would you prefer to have shorts on your girls or showing off their nether regions to everyone at gym etc.

I know which one I'd prefer anyway. Futureproofing, because everyone will be able to wear anything and nothing can be said either. Give it three years.

I bet trans will wear them. But I am not allowed to say that am I?

Montsti · 12/09/2017 19:30

We had to wear them over our knickers and under our school sports skirt which was short. Don't most female tennis players too?

I don't see the problem at all...why is this, in any way offensive?😴😴

LookAtAllTheBullshit · 12/09/2017 19:30

When females are made to wear the standard PE skirts/netball skirts/tennis dresses & skirts because it's the 'norm' but don't want to show underwear (because we would prefer to wear shorts) I think it gives a good option.
I don't think if I play netball men are looking at my pants, I don't want to show my pants, but have no choice because the netball 'uniform' is a short skirt.
They shouldn't need to exist if women could wear shorts for the sports, it's a shit name but it gives me the next best thing to shorts whilst complying with regulations.
Challenge the regulations not the shittly named options that cover my pants.

just5morepeas · 12/09/2017 19:31

If they sold a wider variety of knickers for girls - shorts style that are actually comfortable and cover your whole arse for example - then these might not be needed.

MollyHuaCha · 12/09/2017 19:31

I like them.

Purplepicnic · 12/09/2017 19:31

No one wants or needs to see other people's underwear. Whether it's a lacy bra poking out of a loose top, a teenage boy with his pants hanging out of his jeans or an old lady sitting with her legs akimbo. Or a young girl's knickers.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2017 19:31

The choice is buy them or don't buy them as far as I see it. Some girls may want them some won't.

Littlechip · 12/09/2017 19:32

Unisex, practical school uniforms/dress codes that encourage/permit unrestricted movement and running around would, though.
Erm, that's exactly the point of them.

paxillin · 12/09/2017 19:33

They are a business. They sell stuff people buy. It is not their job to enlighten or educate.

Nuttynoo · 12/09/2017 19:33

If parents bought good quality knickers that didn't rip or go see through at the crotch and cared enough not to let them wear ripped knickers, if kids were toilet trained properly so their streaks couldn't be seen, if parents didn't send their girls into school in thongs and inappropriately low rise trousers, then maybe they wouldn't be required. But they are. And it's often for the kids own good.

AdalindSchade · 12/09/2017 19:34

Surely the issue is that netball skirts and summer dresses are completely inappropriate items for their purpose? In sports, girls run around and jump so should be wearing shorts, not tiny skirts. Little girls play upside down and sit cross legged so they should also be wearing shorts or trousers like their male counterparts.
Skirts are outdated and shit for school uniform to be honest. I don't know why people still make girls wear them.

Gileswithachainsaw · 12/09/2017 19:35

@just

M&s sell seam free shorts. They are fab both my Dds wear them and declare them the most comfy pants ever

GlitterGlue · 12/09/2017 19:35

I'm just going to say it again. They are NOT sportswear. They're sold as underwear to be worn under normal dresses or skirts.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 12/09/2017 19:35

I wish skorts were more popular in the UK and Ireland as they are widely available in the US. No need for 'modesty' shorts. It's all in one!

DioneTheDiabolist · 12/09/2017 19:37

How is selling these the "opposite of a choice"?Confused

EamonnWright · 12/09/2017 19:37

Where on earth did they come from? When did they stop being something you wore because your netball skirt didn't remotely cover your arse and become something that infants needed to wear?

When it was discovered there was a large market for them. People look for other things when most of the time it is down to plain old money.

MatildaTheCat · 12/09/2017 19:37

Ive heard so many bloody grim stories about upskirting recently that frankly they sound like a good idea. I'm not mad of flashing my pants to the world but if I were able to do cartwheels and handstands I'd like to do so without flashing my pants.

Since they aren't compulsory in most schools it's up to the individual but I notice that the two smaller sizes are out of stock so clearly there is a market.

EezerGoode · 12/09/2017 19:38

I don't know why schools don't have 2 uniforms...trousers for winter .shorts for summer..everyone wears the same..that would solve the need for these thrush causing pants...and also the transgender issue of children feeling awkward will be gone,as they all dress the same...ive not worded that last bit very well..but hopefully you get my point

Willow2017 · 12/09/2017 19:38

'modesty shorts' in the 'all girls' section of course they are for girls.

Because girls need to be 'modest' and pants are not enough, apparently girls have to wear not only pants and dresses/skirts which all cover their genitals and bum but they also need 'modesty shorts' in case anyone gets the merest glimpse of a bit of material. 6yr olds shouldnt be even remotely interested in being 'modest' in a playground.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 12/09/2017 19:39

opposite of choice Confused. Strange idea you've got there OP.

butterfly56 · 12/09/2017 19:39

These are almost exactly like the school knickers we had to wear except our were brown!!Grin back in the 60's and 70's!

Katescurios · 12/09/2017 19:41

Its odd to me that attitudes seem to be reverting on this kind of thing. I'm 34, when I was a kid we did cartwheels, handstands and any other jumping etc we wanted and no one cared that knickers were on show. We were kids and it was innocent.

I remember my mum telling me she was caned at school for doing a handstand against the wall because her knickers were shown.

Minus the corporal punishment we seem to be going back to old attitudes. I think its a real shame, I don't want my little girl to be ashamed or worried about showing her body.
