AIBU?

to be freaked out by the frozen, filled faces littering our media

Seriously. And I bet they all think nobody can tell! Will this trend ever end?

I'm often too distracted by the botoxed plumped juvedermed visages on display, to concentrate on what the bearer of said face is actually saying! Doesn't help that they can no longer engage viewers with natural facial expressions.

I find it fascinating and alarming that paying to have the world's deadliest poison injected into you is becoming the norm, especially when all it achieves is a face that doesn't move, and ultimately a weakening of the muscles, which surely are the thing we should be strengthening to prevent wrinkles long term..!? And concentrating on eliminating toxins!

(Obviously I'm not talking about its medicinal uses such as preventing migraines.)

Fillers are even worse, they look absolutely repugnant to me. Especially in the lips! Who wants to kiss a pair of plumped up plastic lips that look like you've had an allergic reaction.

Am I being unreasonable, and am I alone in finding this trend so disturbing and weird... do I need to get with the times? Are injectables just today's "whalebone corsets"? It's got to a point where I actually adore seeing lovely wrinkled faces on the screen as it's so rare now.

My son gets annoyed when people think I'm his girlfriend/partner, my husband gets a bit miffed when people think he's my dad. Maybe they look old for their age?

I agree! It's so spooky that we have evolved this weird taut face with fish lips, cheekbone implants, and in the worst cases, a teeny retrousse nose.
I also agree that it seems most tragic in young women. A few months ago I saw a stunning woman in a restaurant, at second glance she had filled lips, cheek implants, and she had that freaky contouring makeup going on. There was enough of her intact to be fairly sure she would have been much more beautiful without it and she'd have avoided the creepy android look. I think she was actually in her twenties but looked older because of the work 🙁

It also ties in with the drag makeup that's popular at the moment and the dead-eyed porn star look.

Cue a bunch of posts from people saying their sister/neighbour/doctor/hairdresser/dog looks 20 years younger than they are.

They don't.

I look the same now as what I did in 2007. One of my colleagues was surprised to learn last weekend that I am in my 30s and have a child!

I used to be in the Mrs Gloss Facebook group and was quite astounded by the number of relatively young women there who had regular Botox and fillers. Couple that with the filtered to the nth degree selfies and I'm not sure if any of them actually looked like that to begin with!

I like my looks better as I age - you grow into a big nose etc whereas pretty just fades.

Angelina jolie is only 42 so of course she still looks relatively youthful - and much better when smiling. The fish pout adds years and subtracts character.

There it is! The 'but I look over 10 years younger than I am!' claim. Grin

I knew mumsnet would not disappoint.

Yes I find it weird that cosmetic procedures are as common place for some young women as going for a manicure or having their hair dyed. And it's so ageing. Kylie Jenner looks like she's in her mid thirties even though she's only 21 or so. And I agree that she can look good (if alarmingly like a blow up doll) in staged photos but once you see her face moving when talking it looks very different indeed.

I don't think Gillian Anderson has had all those things done. Some maybe but not all. She looks fabulous in The Fall but her face still moves in a natural way. I do have an eagle eye for these things.

Wow, it is making me happy to read all these responses! Although the photos are shocking - is the botox seeping through to their brains and affecting their sight, or better judgement?! Charlotte Crosby - oh dear. I've seen Birds eye factories less frozen..

Yes, I too saw the sex robot item on This Morning! That psychologist was so 'done' I had trouble telling which of the guests was the actual doll!

I googled 'Mumsnet botox' the other day expecting to see some sensible takes on the new trend and I mostly just came across advice threads on what people had had done, which was fine and interesting to read - it's up to the individual. But I think this thread will give a lot of us heart too and maybe even stop a few people ruining their faces. I would advise anyone considering it to read 'Botox: a cautionary tale' on here. It's eye opening - in more ways than one!

Agree wholeheartedly with the poster above who said that if it really were possible for it to be made undetectable, it would not be noticeable in high-profile me rich stars who had access to the best doctors. Gillian Anderson looks unrecognisable to me in the photo above! Or.. Do they actually aim to look like a different species of android?!

Even Kate Middleton n Natalie Portman are at it from what I can tell. It's so sad. Apart from Judy F are there any others who haven't anything done? I don't think Deborah from Dragons den has - I could be wrong. All I see is her beautiful blue eyes and kind but stern expression that reflects her strong personality.

Botox is the biggest con. If you don't continue to get it your skin will drop. Just don't ever get it to start with

No idea what Amanda Holden has had done but she looks like a completely different person these days (face transplant?). Weirds me out all the early/mid 20s reality TV 'stars' with their lip fillers, nose and boob jobs and hideous tattoos (I have nothing against any of these procedures but why so young?). Is it an attention thing? Charlotte Crosby is another 'sleb' with a face which bears no relation to how she looked a few years ago (yes I shamelessly read Now magazine!).

Oh Kate Middleton definitely botoxes but it's very subtle and expertly done. She stops when she's pregnant though so it may become noticeable in the coming months.

Scroll through the photos on this Daily Mail 'article' about some Hollywood gathering of C List celebs. I suppose in their little world they look perfectly normal but for eyes looking in they look like a procession of ghouls.

I had botox on my forehead at 50 for the first time. Regretted it as realised not to have lines at my age just looks creepy and weird. The only place I will have the occasional stab atGrin is in between my eyebrows as sadly my resting face is cross, even when I'm not!

Report
Eolian · 12/09/2017 21:00

It's so cheap and accessible that you don't just feel the pressure from celebs because all your friends are having it done too.

I don't know anyone who's had any cosmetic surgery/botox/fillers. I don't really think of it as something that normal, non-sleb people do!

I've always really liked Ulrika. I was actually a bit upset to see on Masterchef what she'd done to herself. She looks much older than late 40s. And so bloody miserable.

Report
TinklyLittleLaugh · 12/09/2017 21:03

Actually that came across as horrible and bitchy. I just think she would look better without the work - she's a very naturally attractive woman.

Botox is hardcore poison.

I have acquaintances who have it and "fillers" and it's always obvious IMO.

Well what would you like me to do, lie and say I look older since having botox? I'll pm you the comparison photos if you like Wink. I would post it publicly but it's such a give away to my identity!

Skin will "drop"? Sounds like someone has no idea about the subject at hand...
