Seriously. And I bet they all think nobody can tell! Will this trend ever end?

I'm often too distracted by the botoxed plumped juvedermed visages on display, to concentrate on what the bearer of said face is actually saying! Doesn't help that they can no longer engage viewers with natural facial expressions.

I find it fascinating and alarming that paying to have the world's deadliest poison injected into you is becoming the norm, especially when all it achieves is a face that doesn't move, and ultimately a weakening of the muscles, which surely are the thing we should be strengthening to prevent wrinkles long term..!? And concentrating on eliminating toxins!

(Obviously I'm not talking about its medicinal uses such as preventing migraines.)

Fillers are even worse, they look absolutely repugnant to me. Especially in the lips! Who wants to kiss a pair of plumped up plastic lips that look like you've had an allergic reaction.

Am I being unreasonable, and am I alone in finding this trend so disturbing and weird... do I need to get with the times? Are injectables just today's "whalebone corsets"? It's got to a point where I actually adore seeing lovely wrinkled faces on the screen as it's so rare now.

YANBU. And my soul weeps when I see these female stars who are younger than my daughter, (I mean like early 20's!) - who are having procedures done! Like the Kardashians and Megan Fox and the TOWIE stars etc. Charlotte from Geordie Shore has recently completely changed how she looks. She was a cute and pretty little brunette, and she looks like a fucking alien now.

That's her there, before and after...

As has been said, many celebs (and it is usually female ones) who have plastic surgery (and even 'ordinary women who have it done,) look plain weird. And they definitely do not look any younger.

Sadly, there is naff-all you can do about ageing. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY looks more than 5 to 7 years younger than they are. Maybe at first glance, and from a distance, a few people look 10-15 years younger, but close up, you can see their age. A good example is Monica Belluci; a very beautiful lady who looks stunning, and at first glance looks late 30's. But when you look closer, you can tell she is no younger than late 40's. (She is 52.)

And sadly, young women who start having procedures in their 20's end up looking 10 years older than they are, by the time they are 30.

Let well alone FFS .. You can not defy ageing. Not ever. A 55 year old woman who has had plastic surgery, does not look 20 years younger, she just looks like a 55 year old woman who has had plastic surgery.

I am middle aged by the way, I look it, and I am more than happy to look it. I look 3-4 years younger when I am made up, and 3-4 years older when I am make-up free. I would not have any plastic surgery procedures, no matter how much you paid me. I am also not jealous of how women of my age who have had plastic surgery look, and I most definitely do NOT feel 'inadequate!'

Was gutted to see Hermoine Norris (Cold Feet) has ruined her lovely face. Always thought she was so attractive and now looks uncomfortably odd.. Sad

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 12/09/2017 18:48

But c'mon, youknowthey're bullshitting about having work done! How can that make you feel inadequate? They're phonies whose foreheads don't move, everyone knows they've had work done.

My point was the these celebs make you feel inadequate by saying "look how gorgeous I am and it's all natural!" It's all about pressure on women to look perfect and these women are adding to it.

I don't care if someone has surgery, it's up to them if they want to look like that but don't put other women down by lying to them.

FruitCider · 12/09/2017 18:49

granny only way to see is to go and see an aesthetic nurse/doctor (not a beauty therapist!!!) for a consultation. But most of my ladies are in their 60s x

WhittlingIhopMonkey · 12/09/2017 18:50

I find it really distracting too. Clare from Modern Family is meant to be a comedic actress but her face is completely frozen. How do you act in a comedy when you can't convey facial expressions? It really distracts me when she's on screen

grannytomine · 12/09/2017 18:52

FruitCider, thanks. I think I might, don't think it is going to make much difference to anyone else, my husband says he doesn't notice them, but I hate them.

Charlotte has had loads of plastic surgery! I've had Botox and have plenty of movement in my face.

FruitCider, thanks. I think I might, don't think it is going to make much difference to anyone else, my husband says he doesn't notice them, but I hate them.

I'm mid 30s and was getting a deep frown line, so got it done as it bothered me. It was a good decision for me.

grannytomine · 12/09/2017 18:56

Yes if it makes you feel good why not. No one worries about someone dying their hair or wearing make up if it makes them feel good. Those neck muscles stand out for me and make me self conscious, I always assumed you would have to have surgery to improve them but if it can be done as easily as that youtube film then why not?

Albinohedgehogs · 12/09/2017 18:57

I think it'd because we put more emphasis on looks than intelligence.
I'll certainly be encouraging my DD to put her eggs in the brains basket. 🗃

Twelvety · 12/09/2017 18:57

Watching Charlotte Hawkins on strictly, she looks like she's had stuff done and she's early 30s or something!

grannytomine · 12/09/2017 18:59

But does it have to be one or the other? Do you like her to brush her hair or wash her face? Why bother, it's only how she looks.

I hardly wear any make up and have always felt confident about my appearance, my neck has bothered me for the last couple of years does that suddenly reduce my IQ?

MargaretTwatyer · 12/09/2017 19:00

The trend has generally ended though. It's only the really low end celebrities who are still doing it. Even Kylie and Nicole Kidman have stopped. Technology has moved on and this sort of stuff is a bit 'high street' now.

''
Sadly, there is naff-all you can do about ageing. ''

Rubbish. The BIGGEST cause of aging is due to over exposure to the sun. Spf products should be used daily and also healthier, low sugar diets help. Retinol products are also highly effective.

''Skin aging is influenced by several factors including genetics, environmental exposure (UV radiation, xenobiotics, and mechanical stress), hormonal changes and metabolic processes (generation of reactive chemical compounds such as activated oxygen species, sugars and aldehydes). All factors together act on the alterations of skin structure, function, and appearance. Yet solar UV radiation unquestionably is the single major factor responsible for skin aging (Rittié and Fisher 2002).''

MummytoCSJH · 12/09/2017 19:11

I had my lips filled with Juvederm a few weeks ago. I am 19. I didn't do it because of trends, I've always been conscious about my lips because my bottom lip naturally is really uneven. I did research about fillers and this therapist in particular for about a year before I went and made sure I had a list of questions to ask them at hand. I only had half a ml and it really helped my confidence, but I can see why it might get addictive as it really does make you feel better about yourself, I guess that feeling means some people can't stop and have way too much. I have the filler that dissolves eventually so I will have to keep getting it redone, but I am not getting a larger amount of filler, just the same amount every few months again when it's gone. It was really worth it to fix something that has been bothering me since before I can remember. I do think some people go over the top (think Kylie Jenner especially as she is such a role model), and therefore that is a bad example but I also think that it's a good thing for building confidence and making yourself happier if like me you really don't like how you look. I don't actually think there is pressure in young people so much to do it as people make out/think there is - I've never felt pressured to - I didn't spend all that money for just anybody! I did it for myself and I think as long as that is the reason for doing it then it's not a bad thing.

Disastronaut · 12/09/2017 19:14

I have botox, and fillers sometimes. I'm 44 and I'm pretty certain no one can tell.

Would it be better if I was confident enough to look my age? Yes, of course. But I'm not beating myself up about it. You do what you feel you have to do to feel ok about yourself.

I am a bit flummoxed by very young female slebs who have it done though. I guess it's an inevitable, if unhealthy, progression of the trend

ElfrideSwancourt · 12/09/2017 19:14

I was watching a Swedish crime drama on iPlayer a few months ago - initially couldn't work out why the actors looked different- then suddenly realised that their faces moved and they had a normal amount of wrinkles! It really highlighted to me how used to botoxed faces we are becoming.

I got slightly hooked on Love Island this summer (all my daughter's fault) and was shocked at how many of those young beautiful women had had Botox and fillers.

WhataHexIgotinto · 12/09/2017 19:15

YANBU at all. Unfortunately it's not just in the media either, it seems to be creeping into real life too. My friends daughter is 23 and absolutely beautiful. I saw her a couple of weeks ago and she's had her lips pumped full of so much shit I barely recognised her. I could have cried, she's gone from having a truly beautiful face with a kilowatt smile to looking ridiculous.

megletthesecond · 12/09/2017 19:23

I'd have botox in between my brows given half a chance. I sleep badly and wake up with scowl lines between my brows, I get a headache from it.

whiteroseredrose · 12/09/2017 19:25

Truly, if it's done properly, individualised - it is honestly not detectable.

I'd say au contraire Blackadder. I assume the likes of Courtney Cox and Melanie Griffith didn't nip down to their local nail bar for a cheap job. They must have spent thousands. Yet it is VERY detectable.

Bluntness100 · 12/09/2017 19:32

The thing is people only talk about those who have went too far or had it done badly. Those who have had it done well look fantastic, and seldom get talked about.

Both Gillian Anderson and Angelina jolie I think look amazing and they've had both Botox and fillers and a shed load of it too, as an example.

@graceyg

WTF? Confused What you are saying is not the same as what I was saying.

Exposure to the sun will make you age faster OBVIOUSLY.

What I am saying is you cannot stop yourself from aging. IE, you cannot do anything to stop yourself looking roughly your age. You can suntan less and not smoke to stop yourself ageing prematurely, but you cannot stop the ageing process. As I said, nothing anyone does will stop them from looking roughly their actual age.

Cue a bunch of posts from people saying their sister/neighbour/doctor/hairdresser/dog looks 20 years younger than they are.

They don't.

And yeah, the likes of Melanie Griffith, Lulu, Meg Ryan, Olivia Newton John, Courtney Cox etc, look VERY odd, and you can totally tell they have had procedures. And guess what? They don't look younger than their age.

@Bluntness100

And as for Gillian Anderson, sorry but she does look like she has had it done, and she doesn't look younger either. And yeah Jolie looks OK, and obviously has had very little done!

And obviously people are going to talk about the ones where it looks shit. Especially as it does on most people. Very rarely does anyone look better after having plastic surgery.
