Another school uniform one! Girls being forced to wear dresses?

My DD's school have sent a letter out stating 'girls must wear skirts or dresses' - 1950s much?? Surely this is ridiculous and shouldn't be mandated? Or AIBU?

Tights aren't great as they cause thrush. Some girls prefer trousers on their periods. Skirts encourage girls to sit in a "lady like" manner rather than a comfortable one. Girls get told off for showing their pants or as they get older become more self conscious and self aware choose to avoid things that will show their pants. They're cold, you scratch your knees. Tights don't hold up as well as trousers for normal play.

Feminist is not an insult!

WhereDidThatTurtleComeFrom · 11/09/2017 13:17

Are the female teachers in skirts?

WhereDidThatTurtleComeFrom · 11/09/2017 13:18

It's not an insult but it's also necessary to care about children.

Wanderlust1984 · 11/09/2017 13:18

Fab comeback there Eamonn. I'll give you a "backatcha" on that one 👍

There is not a chance in hell my DD would wear a skirt or a dress. Nor would I and very few of my extended family do. It's pretty shit of the school to change the rules just after most people will have bought uniform.

Wanderlust1984 · 11/09/2017 13:19

Nope, the female teachers are generally in trousers or jeans!

Ask the school how comfortable they will be when girls start identifying as boys and therefore having the right to wear trousers.

Wanderlust1984 · 11/09/2017 13:21

I defended my not being a feminist as, if I'm honest some of the feminists I know go so far with it that they're basically discriminatory against all men. I don't resonate with their ideologies at all and I'm definitely not a feminist. I suppose my daughter could wear shorts under her skirt yes x

I think girls should be allowed to wear shorts, skirts, dresses, skorts, or trousers as they prefer. As for boys, if any of them fancy wearing shorts, skorts, skirts or dresses, I think policy should allow them. Grin

MrsOverTheRoad · 11/09/2017 13:25

What's wrong with being a fucking feminist? Hmm

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 11/09/2017 13:26

GinCake we really need a popcorn or eating popcorn emote

MrsOverTheRoad · 11/09/2017 13:27

Bollocks about the poor old men OP. They can look after themselves PERFECTLY well...don't you worry about them.

They're too busy blowing each other up to worry about us.

WaxyBean · 11/09/2017 13:27

Defo complain - no issues with girls wearing trousers (or even shorts as some do) at our school.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 11/09/2017 13:28

I agree OP, it is ridiculous. As for primary schools turning a blind eye???! Thank goodness my primary school does not turn a blind eye but has it in their uniform policy that trousers are an option for girls. It being 2017.

TooStressyForMyOwnGood · 11/09/2017 13:29

treaclesoda, sorry just realised that comment might have seemed as if it was getting at you. I didn't mean to, just the fact that a blind eye has to be turned at all.

Lovemusic33 · 11/09/2017 13:30

I don't get why so many people are fussing over school uniform rules.

School set rules, they are the rules. Life is full of rules that you might not necessarily like but they teach kids that we can't always have what we want in life.

It's not illegal to set uniform rules. Get her some thick tights I she's worried about showing her underwear.

ElizabethShaw · 11/09/2017 13:30

If you're definitely not a feminist then why do you give a fuck if your DD is untreated unfavourably because she is female?

Just put her in a cute skirt and some pretty shoes and tell her to play carefully so no-one sees her knickers.

treaclesoda · 11/09/2017 13:30

It's ok Smile I agree, I'd prefer it to not be a case of turning a blind eye but actually allowing it.

umbongokid · 11/09/2017 13:32

Illegal?! Hmm I'm sure the police will be thrilled to hear about it.
I'm sure they will make an exception if your daughter is adamant she wants to wear trousers. There's no need to get your knickers/boxer shorts in a twist about it.

Wanderlust1984 · 11/09/2017 13:33

"Blowing each other up" exactly the reason I don't identify as a feminist. Myself and DP are both ex army, assuming that's where your insult was directed?

OP posts:
Wanderlust1984 · 11/09/2017 13:34

They haven't made an exception. And I never said it was illegal, just outdated.

Personally I would like to know what wanderlusts husband thinks about it - that's the more important opinion surely?
