To take 15 balls of wool on holiday?

MOIST · 07/09/2017 18:35

I could leave half of them behind but they'd be sad. And I might need them.

But is 15 too many? I could leave some clothes behind to make room for them?

I took 14 balls of Stylecraft to Antigua with me once. Sadly it was really horrible to crochet with in the humidity! I've only ever taken cottons after that. Not sure how humid it is in Crete though. TBH, I'm not sure I'd want to crochet a "whole" blanket on holiday (whole rather than a blanket of squares). It's easier to shove small projects or pieces into a bag for taking out with you.

Which means you have to buy more yarn and that is never a bad thing.

As an aside, I have heard rumours of people having problems with the cover yarn cutter as you can remove the circular blade from inside apparently. Supposedly small scissors are fine although I take nail clippers.

Clover yarn cutter

FinallyDecidedOnUserName · 08/09/2017 09:04

Totally take it. Imagine if you ran out whilst away 😬

Adding to knitting on plane experiences. I have taken circular wooden needles plus a small metal crochet hook on a keyring ( for picking up dropped stitches) many many times on flights with no problem at all excerpt when my bell of wool ran the full length of the aisle during take off and had to be rescued by the hostess much to the amusement of all the other passengers
I did take my clover cuttter worn as a necklace around my neck on a European flight but have heard these are banned by smaricsn airlines.
OP don't worry about taking home stuff if you are anywhere in Europe you can always post it worry free or your manky clothes last time I bought a huge haul on holiday the wool shop in the Shetlands immediately produced a posting bag it arrived home before I did.

I don't think I'll take the 15 balls Sad.
I'll take a few cottons.

wise choice ! - on our thread ( Woolly Hugs) people were complaining about squeaky yarn in the heat .....

MOIST · 08/09/2017 19:05

I'm at the airport. I fear my hand luggage ball won't last me the flight.

I bought some gorgeous yarn and metal fixed circs in New York. Decided to dive in on the flight home but I was a noob and didn't know hanks had to be wound first. Complete disaster. Had no issue with the needles though!

boldlygoingsomewhere · 08/09/2017 19:31

My yarn stash is quite modest but I'm always tempted by something new. I love working with wool and now the nights are drawing in, I'm picking up one of many works in progress.

That Attic 24 blanket is just gorgeous. The colours are lovely!

How long is the flight, MOIST?

MOIST · 08/09/2017 19:33

I have no idea. How long from London to Crete?

Are these type of snippers a nono then?

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 18:15

I was told I couldn't even take knitting needles in hand baggage.

iklboo · 09/09/2017 18:18

If I could 'Matrix' learn a skill it would be crochet. I can do squares. I could probably do a scarf. Anything more complex than that and I'm buggeroonied.

Subtlecheese · 09/09/2017 18:19

I don't trust mine to luggage handlers. But definitely car/ uk hols 😁

Wolfie - I asked, and was told it was okay last January , but I took a crotchet hook in hand luggage, and put the knitting needles in the hold, just in case. Easier to crotchet anyway when you are in a plane seat !

DropZoneOne · 09/09/2017 18:47

I've taken clover amour crochet hooks on domestic and European flights no problem in hand luggage. Scissors with blades less than 6cm are fine too although I take children's scissors now just in case.

Boatmistress! ShockShockShock

My eyes!!

It's very dinky - does the garment expand if required?

wtffgs · 09/09/2017 18:58

MOIST three and a half hours to Crete.

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 20:26

We flew Easyjet from Gatwick to Italy. It wasn't ok. No sharp objects at all.

user453678953 · 09/09/2017 20:36

Yes take all the yarn! I didn't take enough with me and had to do an emergency order whilst I was away!
With regards to flying, I always take s hook and yarn and I've never had a problem

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/09/2017 20:41

I have so much yarn from forays to Ally Pally and Olympia that I dare not buy any more. It encompasses the top shelves of three double wardrobes, a massive four drawer chest of drawers and four out of six drawers in another chest. There are way too many ufo's as well.

baffledcoconut · 11/09/2017 18:40

I had a yarn inventory today. 18 of the Ikea cube shelf things, and 2 huge really useful boxes. Plus two more really useful boxes that need to go on eBay.

The unfinished projects are in a 6 drawer chest of drawers.

The house is well insulated.

AmberStClare · 11/09/2017 19:10

I just googled that blanket and have come over completely unnecessary. Have a long flight next month, overnight too so this would be perfect entertainment for me.

CraftyYankee · 11/09/2017 19:16

I'm working on a gauge swatch right now... thanks OP! Grin
