To take 15 balls of wool on holiday?

MOIST · 07/09/2017 18:35

I could leave half of them behind but they'd be sad. And I might need them.

But is 15 too many? I could leave some clothes behind to make room for them?

I'm off to Yarndale in Skipton on the 23rd September as I missed Woolfest, Cockermouth earlier this summer. I'm also going back to University for my second year and am specialising in Knit Grin. Can't wait to do lots of playing and experimenting.

I took 7 balls of chunky wool on holiday with me with a view to making a bag.

The trouble is that it should have been 8 balls. And, of course, the one I left behind was the first one I needed to use. So naturally I had to go off and find a wool shop and, because it didn't have the wool I needed for that project, I had to buy a couple of different balls and start a different project. So I had 8 and a bit balls of wool, plus part of a crochet shawl, to take back with me.

Ceto · 08/09/2017 00:55

When I last flew I checked the guidance and was surprised to find it said that both crochet hooks and knitting needles were perfectly acceptable.

BlackeyedSusan · 08/09/2017 07:04

be careful though. yarn is dangerous I tell you, dangerous.

dd ended up in A and E after an encounter with half a ball of yarn. (ok if it had been a ball it would not have put her in hospital, it was not being a ball that was the problem.)

Wow, my work funds people doing MScs and PhDs...and I'm pretty sure we don't have many people with knitting qualifications... I'd be doing them a favour really, studying knitting for 5-6 years... filling a gap in our skill set, allowing us to offer clients a wider base of expertise...Grin

I have stash envy :(
I wish I had the space and money for boxes and shelves full!

But to stay on topic, take it. Being relaxed on holiday might make you crochet faster, and you don't want to run out of yarn!
Just don't spill a tropical cocktail over it all!

Clover yarn cutters are good for use when travelling - www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/clover-yarn-cutter-pendant-antique-gold. I have mine attached to the zip on my handbag, it just looks like a decorative accessory.

Ceto · 08/09/2017 07:48

I've been doing the moorland blanket. There are long stretches when you're using the same few colours, so you may not need as many as 15. Mind you, it depends on how fast you crochet and how often you go wrong so you have to undo the entire offing row

TammySwansonTwo · 08/09/2017 07:51

You must be a hell of a lot faster than I am because I can't get through more than about 400g a week 😂

PoppyPopcorn · 08/09/2017 07:52

YANBU. And you need to seek out yarn shops when you're overseas too.

Footle · 08/09/2017 08:04

KnitFast, don't forget Wonderwool.

MOIST · 08/09/2017 08:06

I have a problem.

If I pack my 15 balls of moorland loveliness in my suitcase what do I do on the plane?

Stripes are no good for carry on.

This means I'll be needing a little something in my hand luggage too. I'm thinking a ball or 2 of cotton to do an Octopus (for a premie).

Yes? Good plan?

They're essential. What if you need them?

I may have taken the whole Cottage blanket yarn pack with me to the South of France 😳

Pizzaexpressreview · 08/09/2017 08:10

Tammy - it's because it alternates colours for each stripe!

BannedFromNarnia · 08/09/2017 08:11

Ooh crochet. That's fast and eats a lot of wool, compared to knitting. Definitely take it all.

Orchardgreen · 08/09/2017 08:18

I take sock knitting on holiday with me, it's a small bag. But I once left it on a train, I rang Virgin lost property and described the bag and it's contents. She then started to sound a bit bemused, apparently she thought I'd said my knickers were in it. Never got it back.

3catsadogaboyandahubby · 08/09/2017 08:19

I have a SABLE... Stash Acquired Beyond Life Expectancy.

Doesn't stop me buying more though. Grin

MrsGabor · 08/09/2017 08:21

A preemie octopus sounds like s good plan. Idle hands and all that... nods sagely

MOIST · 08/09/2017 08:27

Or. And brace yourselves, this is a bit shocking....

Do I leave behind the moorland and just take a few cottons for octopi?

I'd feel sad but I'd have more room for local yarn purchases just in case.

3cats - Grin -
thats me I think. When my DM died ( many years ago now) - I acquired her yarn stash too!
When my DD2 finally left home, her bedroom was turned into a wool hoarding room guest room with storage for wool and patterns
I am a big fan of charity shop finds as well as yarn shops too - it is amazing how many WIP end up there, with a full bag of wool unused .
MOIST - I would in seriousness, put the start of your WIP in a small bag, which will go into your hand luggage ( or maybe blantantly carry!)
Thats what I did this year - 2 balls of wool and a hook/cutting thing went fairly small when squashed :)

MissisBee · 08/09/2017 08:43

I once flew with a crochet hook in my hand luggage. My bag got taken for an extra search at security - I thought "oh no, there goes my crochet hook" even though I'd checked the guidance beforehand. Turns out it was the massive box of fudge ID bought that had caused suspicion, crochet hook was completely ignored.

Definitely take all 15, plus cotton for octopus in hand luggage. (I made an octopus for my DS when he came home from hospital - he studiously ignores it!!)

AdmiralSnackbar · 08/09/2017 08:49

Carry on = a cake of Scheepjes Whirl, surely!
Perfect for 'on the go' WIPs...although DH really didn't agree on the beach two weeks ago when I kept excitedly showing him the most recent colour changes...Philistine 😁

Toddlerteaplease · 08/09/2017 08:53

Are you my sister OP, she's wool obsessed and this is exactly what she's say!

MOIST · 08/09/2017 08:54

I've not planned ahead properly. How remiss of me.
I need a sweet little yarn cutter and a Caron cake. Now. Before lunchtime.

or Sirdar colour wheel - they are lovely :)
