I work in a supermarket. Cut myself on a sharp bit on the cage. It's literally 2 long scratches, like cat scratches... Did bleed a bit but not much. Washed it, etc. kept bleeding but not deep at all just one of them ones. They said they didn't have a plaster big enough, so it was best I just went home Shock I was very much oh no I'm fine, etc. they said but I'm wasting time trying to keep washing it.

Honestly, it's like to long cat scratches...

AIBU?

Dunno do you still get paid? If so then whoop whoop

Namechangetempissue · 06/09/2017 14:58

Yes, ridiculous.
Now run home quick and enjoy your day off!

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/09/2017 15:00

You're bleeding, they don't have an appropriate covering so you're having to wash blood off yourself periodically? Yes, of course you should go home. I wouldn't want to be in close proximity with someone leaking bodily fluids at work.

Have they fixed the sharp corners?

ilovesooty · 06/09/2017 15:02

If they couldn't staunch the blood health and safety concerns preclude you bleeding on the premises I would have thought.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 06/09/2017 15:04

If course they are not being unreasonable I wouldn't want you bleeding on my products either. You should be in full pay though with it being a workplace accident. Did they fill in the accident book etc.

connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:11

It was just a scratch though. It wasn't pouring out.

FallingOrbit · 06/09/2017 15:13

Provided you're still being paid for the day (which you should be) then make a conscious effort to get scratched every single day! And then go home on full pay! Praise be to the sharp corners!

Mummaofboys · 06/09/2017 15:14

As long as you will still got paid I'd be running out if that door!

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/09/2017 15:15

Have you heard of hepatitis? Or been tested recently? It can live in a drop of blood for a week outside your body.

I might be unreasonable because my experience of people bleeding is in homeless shelters but NO to any bleeding that isn't covered.

m4rdybum · 06/09/2017 15:15

I would say YABU if you're still getting paid. If they're not paying you, they're BU.

I would suggest they're doing it due to H&S and insurance - they really should have a suitable first aid kit on site..

PovertyPain · 06/09/2017 15:17

Make sure you fill in the accident book. Don't let them play it down. Yes, it's a miner accident, but you could get an infection.

connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:22

I'm under the threshold for sick pay, so I believe that's the same for if you clock out half way through a shift?

They didn't add it to an incident book... Does it need to??

OP posts:
RonSwansonsMoustache · 06/09/2017 15:25

If I wasn't getting paid, I would refuse to go home. That's bullshit - accidents in the workplace need to be recorded, and if it's severe enough that you can't work as a result, they should at least pay you for the rest of your shift.

If I was going to get paid, however, I would run before they changed their mind!

ParadiseCity · 06/09/2017 15:26

Surely a supermarket should have plasters?!!!

connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:28

They have plasters lol, both in first aid and on shop floor, but none "big enough" apparently. It's literally just a long thin scratch that bled.

OP posts:
blacksax · 06/09/2017 15:29

It should have gone in the accident book yes, and they should also have made a proper note of the fact that they sent you home.

ABitDisgruntled · 06/09/2017 15:29

It was an accident that happened at work. It definitely needs to go in the accident book and they are negligent in not doing so. Make sure it is entered in. If you did catch something, unlikely yes but if you did, there would be no record of it and they would not be liable.

Ceto · 06/09/2017 15:32

Do they have anything like lint that you can strap over it?

Namechangeblock · 06/09/2017 15:33

They would still be liable even if not recorded in the accident book - it might just make it harder for you to prove that an accident at work had taken place. Get it recorded in the book!

ilovesooty · 06/09/2017 15:34

Of course it should have been recorded as an injury sustained at work.

Eliza9917 · 06/09/2017 15:34

Surely they have a roll of the plaster that you cut with scissors?

I'd refuse to go home unless being paid for the rest of the day, and if they think it's serious enough that you shouldn't be in work, then it's serious enough that it has to go in the accident book.

connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:35

No they only have small plasters of those square white ones.

I'll make sure it goes in the book.

OP posts:
connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:35

*or those

OP posts:
BannedFromNarnia · 06/09/2017 15:36

It absolutely needs to go into the inicident book and they're being negligent by not adding it. The incident book is for ALL accidents and near misses - it's part of standard H&S reporting procedures that are designed to make all our workplaces safer.

For instance, it's only a minor thing to you - but if you or two or three people report similar scratches whoever is reviewing the book can deal with the issue before someone falls on the sharp thing and loses an eye.

Ceto · 06/09/2017 15:39

How about a bandage? It's desperately OTT, but maybe it could hold a bit of kitchen towel in place till the bleeding stops?
