I work in a supermarket. Cut myself on a sharp bit on the cage. It's literally 2 long scratches, like cat scratches... Did bleed a bit but not much. Washed it, etc. kept bleeding but not deep at all just one of them ones. They said they didn't have a plaster big enough, so it was best I just went home Shock I was very much oh no I'm fine, etc. they said but I'm wasting time trying to keep washing it.

Honestly, it's like to long cat scratches...

AIBU?

Two plasters? End to end?

I cut myself all the fucking time on cardboard boxes when I'm shelf stacking. It's perfectly normal to find me staunching blood with blue roll and trying to serve customers, no one has ever offered to send me home. The best I can do is keep my hand in my pocket and yell for 'someone, ANYONE' to fetch me a plaster!

Wish I worked in your shop.

if it can't be cleaned properly they are not being U

but are you being paid?

connielucking · 06/09/2017 15:54

I'm under the threshold for sick pay but don't know if they pay till the end of shift.

It sounds as though the manager on duty, or whoever made the decision, sent you home to avoid paying you for the rest of the shift and avoid dealing with the paperwork of an accident (no matter how minor, they might be expected to initiate making the cage safe).

For that reason they are U

RubyGoat · 06/09/2017 16:05

They should have completed an accident form at the time, as per the law <a class="break-all" href="https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/indg453.pdf&ved=0ahUKEwjTl4zC55DWAhVnB8AKHQ8KCFAQFgiMATAN&usg=AFQjCNGQTQrRGaJgZ6uFEZsllwa3nj2OjA" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">outlined here. If you develop an infection (extremely unlikely, but it does happen),* they have left themselves open to legal action. And they demonstrably knew about the injury, as they sent you home from work.

*I'm not trying to scare you with this - it's incredibly rare for this to happen if you keep the cut clean & covered.

Evelynismyspyname · 06/09/2017 16:09

I'm sure there would have been a bandage in the first aid kit - overkill maybe but better than sending you home causing you to lose half a shift's wages because of a work place accident.

Goldenhandshake · 06/09/2017 16:47

They sent you home because there is the risk of your blood contaminating food items or food packaging if you are continuing to bleed and do not have a correctly sized covering.

It is a sensible safety precaution.

I'm under the threshold for sick pay but don't know if they pay till the end of shift.

If they do not pay you to the end of your shift, go straight to HR.

ilovesooty · 06/09/2017 20:19

Whether you're under the threshold for sick pay is irrelevant. This is an industrial injury.

I'd advise consulting your union but as you haven't mentioned it I'm assuming you aren't a member.
