to think we no longer live in a Christian country

More than 53% of people have no faith - according to a recent survey.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41150792

That figure changes to 71% amongst 18-25 yr olds.

It surveyed 3000 adults - so it would be interesting to look behind the stats but it seems that more than half the country have no religion.

Christianity is still probably the most common religion out there.

Should this have implications for areas of national life?

Sounds like a good thing to me

Patapouf · 04/09/2017 21:46

It is perfectly possible to be ethical and have good morals without being religious.

And I reckon religion brings nothing but strife so I don't think this is a bad thing at all.

monkeyfacegrace · 04/09/2017 21:47

Religion has no place in any society.

The sooner it's 100% have no faith, the better. What a crock of shit.

FenceSitter01 · 04/09/2017 21:49

It's unfortunate. He who believes in nothing believes anything.

LespritDescalier · 04/09/2017 21:50

Logic fail. Not believing in religion does not mean believing in nothing.

Also, that doesn't even make sense.

c3pu · 04/09/2017 21:50

It's unfortunate. He who believes in nothing believes anything.

And he who believes in invisible friends in the sky believes only the truth? Grin

JemmyBloocher · 04/09/2017 21:51

We aren't a Christian country certainly, but our culture is still Christian (whatever the heck that means in reality). Things will slowly change as the old guard dies and the young atheists get older and replace them. Interesting times.

Zafodbeeblbrox10 · 04/09/2017 21:52

Christianity might be flagging.. But satanism is definitely on the rise. Just look at popular culture /music.

scrabbler3 · 04/09/2017 21:52

Society is becoming more secular and it doesn't bother me one iota. The sooner churches etc become no more than historical places of interest, the better.

ephemeralfairy · 04/09/2017 21:53

I don't think religion should play any part in public life or influence affairs of state. I think it's a private personal thing and should be treated as such.

orlantina · 04/09/2017 21:53

It's unfortunate. He who believes in nothing believes anything

That's strange.

What a crock of shit

I think that's unfair - I know that faith means a lot to some people.

I do just wonder what this means when people like Theresa May says things like "We are a Christian country" into her conversations, when faith schools get advantages, when we have collective worship etc.

Religion isn't as big a thing as it used to be.

Certainly the bishops should no longer hold a place in the Lords. Their very tenuous "right" to be there gets more indefensible every year. It's more than time the CoE was disestablished like it already is in Wales

Religion has caused so many wars which have killed so many people. I don't see this as a bad thing.

And Satanism in music Zafod? Are you from 1950s America? Confused

FenceSitter01 · 04/09/2017 21:56

Its quite an old saying, Chesterton I think. Perhaps all you academics and intellectuals could take it up with him?

The full quote is When a man stops believing in God he doesn’t then believe in nothing, he believes anything. but I know you're all so well educated you knew that really Wink

Lighthearted joke on your part or serious?

If serious can you provide example citing evidence of the link to satanism please?

This just made my day.

InsomniacAnonymous · 04/09/2017 21:57

I agree with all your post Patapouf. I like the famous quote of philosopher Epicurus (born 341 BC):-

"Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil?
Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?"

acornsandnuts · 04/09/2017 21:58

Just like when the people realized that the world wasn't flat.

Well, I've heard that if you play a certain record backwards....

I think they should turn all the churches into homeless shelters and put them to some good use.

I don't mind if people want to keep their faith, as long as they don't inflict it on anyone else or think their own religion is more accurate than any other.

LespritDescalier · 04/09/2017 21:59

Actually its not. Attributed, yes. Found anywhere at all in writings, no. He said some quite similar things, but not that.

BlackJesus · 04/09/2017 22:00

placematkung for this satanism explanation

Mulch · 04/09/2017 22:00

It's Christian when it suits people Ie chance to bash Muslims and moan about inequality
