to think we no longer live in a Christian country

More than 53% of people have no faith - according to a recent survey.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41150792

That figure changes to 71% amongst 18-25 yr olds.

It surveyed 3000 adults - so it would be interesting to look behind the stats but it seems that more than half the country have no religion.

Christianity is still probably the most common religion out there.

Should this have implications for areas of national life?

Because it's not a religion i respect.

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:01

Because it's not a religion i respect

That's ok. Don't practice it.

Surely you don't have issues that other people chose to practice their religious beliefs?

bluedemilune · 05/09/2017 00:02

Christianity on the way out, Islam on the rise. Just awful.

Where do you get that from? that islam is on the rise? that kind of scaremongering is how the publics consent for all the wars on the middle east are won.

north korea with a madman and nuclear weapons and constant threatening behaviour to his neighbours is completely understated and underreported and instead we go and threaten and beat down with bombs and drones and gunships poor muslim countries that have none of that weaponry nor threaten that. must be atheists at the helm here looking out for those atheists over there otherwise i cant understand this.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/09/2017 00:05

It's well documented that Islam is the fastest growing religion

And is in Europe but that isn't necessarily to do with people converting more immigration and growing families

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:05

I didn't say it was on the rise, someone up thread did. I was responding to that. But scaremongering? so it is a scary prospect?

bluedemilune · 05/09/2017 00:06

you know the worst country in the whole world for persecution of christians is north korea. but still we keep belting out these dangerous tropes creating a bogeyman 'islam is on the rise' whilst we are all sleepwalking to nuclear armageddon wait for it, not in the middle east but in the far east.

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:07

But scaremongering? so it is a scary prospect?

I rather think the scaremongering bit was the "just awful" part

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:09

Whose not worried about North Korea? it's the only thing i worry about lately. Be mad not to.Confused

Ohmyfuck · 05/09/2017 00:10

Patapouf Yes, I agree entirely.

DopeOnARope · 05/09/2017 00:11

"but marriage isn't about just sharing your love it's about other commitments you have children, property, inheritance and so on "

Sez you, with your Judo-Christian infused view of what marriage is. A lesbian couple with a bio Dad sounds like a great legally constituted family to me! Why can't people you describe as having open relationships formulate them into families like couples can? There is no moral or practical objection?

Polygamy may well have originated in a tribal set up to maximise women having babies but in our age of inflated house prices a version might be a woman chooses two men to earn enough for a mortgage and support one or two children between them all. That would reduce the carbon footprint quite a bit.

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:11

The "just awful" is my opinion, which i'm entitled to. Hardly scaremongering, as a Christian why on earth would i want that.

sugaredstrawberries · 05/09/2017 00:11

As a Christian I totally agree OP, although I do not ever force my beliefs on others. I feel that faith should come naturally and not by being forced. I always find it strange that people can slate religion left, right and centre yet don't realise that unbelief or 'atheism' is actually a belief in itself. The fact is, regardless of whether a certain country is christian or not, we should respect and love one another.... now I'm sure, regardless of ones beliefs, everyone can agree on that?

user1490607838 · 05/09/2017 00:12

People saying nasty things like 'magical unicorn.' 'sky fairy,' 'invisible nobodies in the sky,' and shit like that make me sick.

I notice that some athesists are massive hypocrites. They claim they don't believe in God or Jesus, and that they HATE religion, but they don't seem to be able to stop themselves commenting on it. I don't like football, and guess what? I never fucking talk about it!!!

There are several celebs on twitter who bang on about religion, even though they are atheists. If you have no interest in it, why keep commenting? Why do you think people with a faith give a SHIT about your views?

And of course it's only CHRISTIANITY that they bash; never Islam - oh no!!! They go on about Christians 'banging on about religion' yet they bang on about how ATHEIST they are, a lot more than anyone goes on about Jesus!

Another thing that makes me laugh is how these non-believers are quite happy to use the Christian Churches for their weddings, and Christenings, and always seem desperate to get their kids into a religious school (because they are always very good.)

Hypocrites! Hmm

One woman even asked on a message forum I go on (last year,) if she could have a NON-RELIGIOUS WEDDING in a Christian Church.

You couldn't make it up!

bluedemilune · 05/09/2017 00:13

"It's well documented that Islam is the fastest growing religion "

well is that from conversions or is that from birth rate. and if its the latter maybe we need to look at what is causing the fertility rate in the west to drop so dramatically rather than see catastrophe in other people having children. it came out a few weeks ago

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2017/jul/25/sperm-counts-among-western-men-have-halved-in-last-40-years-study

thats biological not to do with sociology or religion. why are sperm counts across so many majority rich christian countries falling by half. theres hardly any attention to that been given, respected researchers and study methods, instead our overlords here want islam as the bogeyman about to take over to take peoples attention off a huge public health problem.

StrangeLookingParasite · 05/09/2017 00:13

You'd have to rebuild the structure of the state, and in history, that often occurs in conjunction with revolution, massacre and genocide

I am pretty sure that's a slight over exageration there.

Not really. There have rarely (ever?) been bloodless revolutions, which is what the rebuilding of a state takes.

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:14

as a Christian why on earth would i want that

So you want everyone to be Christian? Surely the default position is to concentrate and practice one's own faith with the caveat that it's acceptable for others to do the same?

Incidentally that the UK is no longer broadly a Christian country is because more people identify as "no religion".

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:14

Surely you don't have issues that other people chose to practice their religious beliefs?
No quite the opposite, as long as those others don't have issues with mine.

StrangeLookingParasite · 05/09/2017 00:15

yet don't realise that unbelief or 'atheism' is actually a belief in itself.

No, it's not. Absence of something doesn't make it a thing.

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:16

I notice that some athesists are massive hypocrites. They claim they don't believe in God or Jesus, and that they HATE religion, but they don't seem to be able to stop themselves commenting on it

That's not hypocritical. I am an atheist. I don't hate religion. I find the history and development of the country through religion fascinating.

I firmly believe EVERYONE should be allowed to practice their faith as they choose but that the country should be secular.

As a resident of the country I am entitled to discuss that. I always do so respectfully.

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:18

No i don't want everyone to be Christian, unlike Islam who want everyone to be muslim. The thread was about Christianity on the way out, someone said "and Islam is on the rise", so no, wtf would i want that. Please don't tell me what i should want. I've got my own mind.

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:19

No quite the opposite, as long as those others don't have issues with mine

Ah I presume you mean you think people who practice Islam do?

JacquesHammer · 05/09/2017 00:19

Muslims don't want everyone to be Muslim. What a bizarre notion!

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:21

I mean exactly what i said. I don't impose my religion on anyone.

heartstornastray · 05/09/2017 00:22

jaques the extremists do.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/09/2017 00:23

The religious view be it Christian or whatever is that it is done under the laws god has created and under gods blessing

why not just live together and set up an agreement on responsibilities and have a blessing if we want to move on move on from marriage

How could what you have given an example of be considered if all religions are to be considered when creating laws when some religions homosexuality is absolutely forbidden and so is women having more than one husband
