An issue (Facebook)

Critics say that because shareholders judge the companies partly based on a crucial data point — “monthly active users” — they are reluctant to police their sites too aggressively for fear of reducing that number. The companies use technical tools and teams of analysts to detect bogus accounts, but the scale of the sites — 328 million users on Twitter, nearly two billion on Facebook — means they often remove impostors only in response to complaints.

But fair point (twitter)

“This is important because we cannot distinguish whether every single Tweet from every person is truthful or not,” the statement said. “We, as a company, should not be the arbiter of truth.”

Echoes what we were discussing earlier

We talked about this on an earlier thread I believe.

Donald Trump Jr.’s new statement about June 2016 Trump Tower meeting is significant both in what is included & what is excluded. Here’s why:

Important point from Schiff:

Good morning, all, from the first day of the week-end in the sunny sandpit where all we have to worry about is our 4x4's being stuck in the desert.
I found this article from a Norwegian paper on a friend's FB feed and the rather bad translation is thanks to Google. There must have been articles about/by this chap on these threads before, but it was the first time he has registered with me and I came away from reading it agreeing with every word but with almost no hope.

Sorry I've been a bit absent. (Touch of flu). You know how I love nauseating Trump images? Here's a new one for y'all...

Oh God, they're likening Trump to Jesus now? If I wasn't on so much anti-nausea medicine I'd probably be sick right now.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 08/09/2017 07:42

Despair and hopelessness about this situation is my usual state ouais but for some reason, that article didn't provoke those responses in me.

I don't know if that means I've normalised all of this of am just in a more cheerful mood this morning but I felt like it was offering hope in that if we persisted, he could be ousted.

It might also be because what I find very frightening in the current political times isn't necessarily Trump as a figure but how democracy has been subverted and how all of these shadowy, string-pulling practices were going on and the people in power were doing nothing to address, let alone try to halt it.

But now, the press, IC, and some elected officials are shining a light on it and hopefully that'll help disinfect and therefore weaken the effects of it and maybe it won't continue this way.

(This is very poorly expressed - being back to work and having such little sleep is taking a toll but hopefully you get the gist!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/09/2017 08:23

In all the awfulness it makes me giggle that Trump wasn't invited to join in with the previous 5 presidents for the OneAmericaAppeal

Trumps response :"We will confront ANY challenge, no matter how strong the winds or high the water. I’m proud to stand with Presidents for #OneAmericaAppeal."

That's nice sweetie, it's sad they didn't invite you to the party, it's because you don't play nice..

In the meantime, Mexico has been hit be a provisionally categorized 8.1 earthquake. Tsunami warnings have been issued.

All we need now is a plague.

Funny you should mention it.

I was reading yesterday that Houston expects a huge increase in mosquitoes in a couple of weeks. They're spraying, etc.
But mosquitoes could bring about West Nile fever and other nasties.

Indeed, Natsku, I think extreme Trumpism should be declared some kind of disease. There's no other explanation. How can someone with working brain cells push aside all that has been revealed about the character of Trump and truly think he will make America great?

Oybbk I was going to ask how/where Trump issued that statement so I could look it up before I made this face at myself Hmm can you catch flu from over the internet? This optimism and forgetting that Trump only communicates by tweets makes me think it might be possible

More on how/whether to moderate Facebook

www.buzzfeed.com/craigsilverman/facebooks-russian-ads-disclosure-opens-a-new-front-that?utm_term=.pa4n9oP00#.isJgRN8yy

PerkingFaintly · 08/09/2017 11:05

That's an interesting article Pain - about the difficulties auditing Facebook content rather than about censoring it.

Alex Howard, deputy director of the Sunlight Foundation, which advocates for government transparency, said highly targeted online ads can be “weaponized against liberal democracies” because they do not meet the same levels of disclosure and visibility as traditional radio, TV, and print ads.

“It removes our ability to have transparency into who is trying to influence our politics, and any accountability for that influence,” Howard said. “And it takes away from the capacity of the traditional organs of democracy — that being the press and regulators and other institutions — to figure out who is behind political messaging, particularly at crucial times.”
...
Of particular focus for critics and congressional investigators is the use of so-called dark post ads by Russian trolls, as well as by campaigns, PACs, and other entities, to target specific Americans by geography, interest, and other data points.
...
Dark post ads — which Facebook calls “Unpublished Page post ads” — appear in a person's News Feed like any other ad, but are only visible to those being targeted. There is no way to identify the dark post ads being run by a particular page or account on Facebook. That means academics who have spent decades tracking and analyzing political ads, as well as fact checkers who try to keep campaigns and PACs honest, might never see the messages being fed to voters.

PerkingFaintly · 08/09/2017 11:18

The BBC ran a project at the recent UK general election, asking people to send in examples of the political ads they were being shown on social media.

Are you being targeted by political ads?
www.bbc.co.uk/news/election-2017-39936929

It's an interesting way of getting a sample - and indicative of the fact that we're not in the days of publicly viewable and auditable billboards and radio/TV advertising any more.
