To never want to sell on ebay because it brings disaster into your life?

In the last month, I've bought 12 things from ebay. However of those sellers:

  • 1 had an unexpected bereavement so couldn't post for ages
  • Another's partner was rushed into hospital so couldn't post for ages (must have ruined the holiday they told me they had planned a few days after I paid).
  • 1 was flooded and hasn't had a computer so couldn't post (but thankfully they had their phone of something because they could reply to feedback)
  • 1 of them had a pesky dog who damaged the item. I was a bit disappointed because the item went for much less than it should have done.
  • 1 of them has posted it but it's gone missing but darn it, the post office printer wasn't working so she has no proof but she did post it so no won't refund (don't worry, I know my rights).

So, ebay sellers seem to be an unlucky lot.

What are the best lines you've had from ebay sellers/buyers?

For the record, I'm generally not bothered about delays as long as they tell me. I've replied nicely to all the messages and symphasised as apprpropriate.

I read your post and wondered if it was an old post I'd written!

Worn around hospital... foam bit disintegrated. By then I'd thrown away box and packaging. So pissed off as I have massive feet and mbt shoes are nearly impossible to buy now. Returned and refunded minus £15.

Never again.

Actually, this thread is making me feel very guilty.

I love ebay and buy a lot of things it (never sell) and have generally been extremely happy with both price and quality. I love it as it provides me with the opportunity to get some items I would otherwise find next to impossible to get. For example, I recently bought a DVD of Granada's "The Caesars" (1968) with Andre Morell and Freddie Jones for $au8.00, which is about 5.50 pounds. That included the DVD and postage from the UK to Australia, which is real bargain for something I was prepared to pay several times that amount for. It even arrived in about 5 days.

However, I go through phases when, for some reason (apathy?), I don't provide feedback. I frequently do, but will make sure that that from now on I certainly do, as I didn't realise that feedback makes such a difference to the seller.

I recently sold about £500 worth of girls next clothing all with the matching shoes tights and hair accessories. They went for £45
And the woman complained that one pair of leather boots looked like they had been worn on the sole!!!!
They were listed as all used and they were in great condition!
She asked for a refund on the whole thing so I sent her a return postage label that I had to pay for. She never sent it back so I didn't refund her! I think she was just hoping I would say sod it

Sold a pair of brand new fit flops which I'd bought in sale while preg then couldn't get my post-preg feet into.
I listed postage as first class but got it wrong so in post office the morning after auction ended paid for 2nd class at a few pence less than I'd charged (so more than I got after eBay fees, PayPal fees, never mind packaging, petrol to Post Office...).
Message received from buyer of brand new in box fitflops for £4 plus £3 p&p who received parcel pretty quickly but noticed 2nd hand postage paid said "I think the least you can do is refund the postage"😡

I had largely very good experiences as a seller and buyer but I noticed an increase in cheeky fuckery recently. I was selling DP's Ralph Lauren top as a part of declutter exercise alongside some more designer clobber I got out of DP's wardrobe. Almost immediately a buyer contacted me and begged me to do "buy now". I resisted and he insisted and insisted and then wanted to pay the price he put forward (fair) but for that price to now include postage too. I stood my ground and requested original price. As I was at home that day I had more time so inadvertently got sucked into a conversation that I may have nipped in the bud another time. Thinking he was annoying but that I've invested so much time already I sold the item to him in the end and posted the same day with a more expensive post option which I haven't charged for as had an inkling he was trouble. Sure enough I get a message next day. Apparently there is a stain on the front I didn't mention. As I photograph items to death I request a picture of where this stain is as I have no evidence of it on my pictures and say I'm happy to refund. Despite my insistence he swerves the request for pictures of the stain and wants a part refund. A part refund is of course for the amount that will get him to the same amount he was prepared to pay initially Hmm. By that time I lost the will to live so I gave him the refund. He then started asking about my other items listed trying to cut more deals 🙄. I never replied and blocked him from bidding on my items and reported him to eBay. And I never do these "please do it but now" deals people request. Auction is auction. It often weeds out the cheeky fuckers who will move on.

Ebay is the work of Satan himself. I collect lovely handbags so sell them on every now and then. I once sold a Mulberry Bayswater (quite cheaply, tbh) and the buyer took 7 days to pay (which should have been a clue that she was an asshat) then demanded next-day delivery because she was going on holiday. Three weeks later I had an email saying "I don't think it's genuine, I want to return it" and when I sent her the documents that had come from the Mulberry store said "well I don't like it any more". She returned it and she'd clearly taken it on holiday, had a merry old time taking my bloody bag out and about on adventures getting it filthy and damaged then tried to get her money back. Thankfully ebay refused the refund based on the photos of the damage I sent, but the stress was vile. I don't sell on there any more because some buyers are just rude, rude, rude.

It should be banned.

eBay will go under eventually.

People can sell/buy on Facebook for free with no third party forcing unfair refunds etc.

Plus the website it's crap to use on mobile.

In the interest of balance we have had a good experience of ebay selling upwards of 100 item with perhaps only 1% of transactions that have any problems. We sell used books and china so maybe these categories have less issues than say clothes or electrical equipment. We have also been pleasantly surprised by the number of buyers who have reimbursed us if we have refunded due to non-delivery and the parcel then arrives.

I love and hate eBay. Generally great experience but I remember one ludicrous buyer. I sold a pair of unworn white linen shorts from Jigsaw.

A woman bought them for £3.50, they cost me at least 10 times that. I posted them out and the woman then began complaining they were not white. I'd put a great description and multiple great photos. The woman wanted me to refund her and pay her returns postage for a pair of white shorts (that were white ☹️) . She was such a time waster - we even got a story about someone dying as a reason why she never posted the shorts back to me and why she took days to respond.

eBay told her to jog on but all that hassle, had to open a case, blah blah blah over the 3.50 bargain white white shorts.

Agree with this and when it happens it will be entirely self inflicted. It's shot itself in the foot not only with the ludicrous returns policy bit also with its own greed in fees. Once every inbred section has taken its cut (including FVF on postage) there's often very little left over for the effort and risk involved.

This actually for real happened to me! We were having a clear out before we moved and just as all the auctions finished DH was rushed to hospital with acute pancreatitis.

Even though it had really happened, I still felt like I was lying when we got home (4 days later, long story) and I had to email everyone to explain.

Oh God I shouldn't have read this thread. I just sold on eBay for the first time in forever, I had no choice as it was a very niche but very expensive (for what it is) item. I don't sell on there any more for all the reasons you've listed above, but I feel like I've been doing since posting this item out is waiting for the ebay email saying they want to return the item and there's something wrong with it as the buyer regrets paying what they did for it! 🙈.

EBay really is shit for sellers.

I bought a 'purple' skirt which turned out to be steely grey. Messaged seller to ask if she had sent the wrong skirt. It was nice and I would keep it but thought it was a genuine mistake. If she had another purple skirt I would be happy to buy it. Sent photos of both the outer and inner labels describing it as grey. Received a message back from seller saying that she had done a quick survey with the girls in the office and everyone thought it looked purple in the photo, so it was. Left a neutral. Traumatised seller mesaged back moaning that she had never neceived an neg in in 15 years on Ebay and I had ruined her life.

Next I won a pair of £80 shoes for £10. No reponse from seller. After 2 weeks she claimed she had left them in the boot of the car accidentaly and would post them immediately. A week later she blamed her husband and announced her intention to murder him and bury him under the patio. Then she told me she would send a full refund and the shoes. At least I got the refund.

Shortly afterwards I won a brand new £150 wool coat for £12. Lovely seller discovered she had overcharged me by £5 for postage and promptly refunded me. I left her very good feedback. Grin

I've had a string of people straight up asking for discounts. The items aren't listed as open to offers, it's just entitled cunts chancing their arm.
Makes me want to immediately raise the price.

It's so hard to find anything on eBay at the moment as there's so much crap from China. If you look up clothing, even setting it to ship from the UK, it comes up with tonnes of crap wholesale stuff.

Sold a beautiful boden dress that had faulty zip. Marked all over the ad that it was faulty, showed it in photos etc too.
The buyer then set up a complaint against me as she hadn't read the advert or looked at the photos to realise it was faulty. She even admitted that!! Gave me negative feedback and sent me some hideously sinister emails !!!!

Yup, I don't have account but sold items through dh's which in the main have been fine but have noticed recently problems being found which weren't there, items undelivered etc so have given up, there's always someone out for the main chance unfortunately ruining it for others.

We patiently listed DD's age 1 baby clothes, it was a Next collection of lots of matching items listed in several listings. One buyer bid and won 4 lots of the clothes, spending £100. We were absolutely broke at the time, DH had been made redundant and we desperately needed the money. She didn't pay for 7 days, when contacted said she would pay in instalments?! We agreed that she could pay for 2 of the lots as "instalments" but the rest would be re-listed if she didn't pay within the time frame. Cue many abusive messages, one threatening to report us to the police for harassment, one telling us how she was disabled looking after foster children and couldn't afford to pay, several telling us that we were being verbally abusive (we weren't at all) and how could she possibly pay when she was nowhere near the date for her foster-parent allowance arriving?
We reported her to eBay but they were slow to act. Eventually she paid for some of her auctions, those left unpaid were cancelled and relocated. By this point we had had to borrow the money from my parents to pay back when we could. eBay needs to re-evaluate its protection for sellers- I still use it a lot, but only because the local selling sites are worse for no-shows and non-payers.

Life is too short. We recently cleared out 1000s of matchattax cards before new season's come out. My husband posted the card mountain on fbook- loads of people said 'sell them on eBay!'.
No way. I don't get the obsession with making money out of things you've paid for and got the benefit from.

I sell 900 items a month on ebay. Rarely a problem. I have 100% feedback.

I sell a lot on eBay- about 600 items a month. It's both the best and the worst thing I've ever started. I'm (obviously) a business seller so I have to put up with returns up to 60 days after the sale (my policy is 30 days, but a paypal dispute is possible much, much longer than that) as well as cheeky fuckery and blatant thievery. Overall it's worth it though and my regular customers are gems.
A friend of mine puts it very well, I think: eBay is flypaper for fuckwits. Thankfully the percentage of nightmare customers is low in my categories. I wouldn't dare attempt to sell in tech or clothing,
as a buyer I do love being able to look for stuff like antique collar studs and tent pegs at the same time, and I buy a lot of fabrics and craft supplies too.
