Just that. For an undergrad, moving away situation?

OP posts:

@Troupee3 - I went to university as a mature student, aged 25 - I'd done my nurse training first, and worked as a staff nurse for 3 years before deciding to make a big change and do a degree in Music and Politics.

I think that being a bit older and more mature gave me some advantages at university - I had a bit more life experience, and valued the whole experience more than I think I would have if I had gone at 18.

Bloke1976 · 01/09/2017 19:06

I went to uni at 22. Disadvantages... being the 'old' guy on the course. Advantage. .. I didn't piss about and worked while the others hit the pubs. (I dI'd go out but realised I was there to work). I feel I made the best choice going later rather than at 18.

MissClimpsonsTypingBureau · 01/09/2017 19:12

Do it OP. One of my best friends from uni was 24 when she started. She had a great time, made good friends, got a good degree. I and others who'd gone at 18/19 never thought of her as different. And this was 15 years ago - now uni is more expensive lots more people are working and saving first.

DonutCone · 01/09/2017 19:16

Went I went to Uni I had just turned 18 a couple of weeks before. I was shocked at how many other first years were 20 already or turned 20 very soon after we started. You have a gap year and your birthday is in September or early October and you can easily be 20 within the first few weeks of starting.

It really isn't odd at all.

historygeek12 · 01/09/2017 19:18

I started mine when I was 43, there will be all different ages starting x

PNGirl · 01/09/2017 19:24

No, but the halls thing depends on the uni. Mine classed 21 and up as "mature" and you got separated in your college (halls) from all the 18-20 year olds. No bad thing really as you were in with the grad students and got an en-suite!

cardibach · 01/09/2017 19:31

DD who has just graduated at 21 just laughed out loud when I asked her your question. Loads of 20+ year olds! Please go and enjoy!

apoolofprettypetals · 01/09/2017 19:32

I'm starting uni next week and I'm 23! Although I'm only doing one year because it's a top up! My college did hnd's luckily because I've never wanted to go to uni! Dreading it tbh!
So no you're not to old!

DeadDoorpost · 01/09/2017 19:36

I've had people on my course who've been close to 30 as an undergrad moving away. Good friend of mine was 23 first year and we didn't find out until the end of the 1st year. Another guy was 25 when he started.

Oldest we had was in her 60's I believe. Moved down here to do the 3 year course. 20 is a great age (I was 20 when I started and I've just graduated) and you'll certainly find that there's older people there. Besides, no-one even cares much about your age. If you're good fun and a decent person then that's all that matters.

mctat · 01/09/2017 20:17

I went at 21. Love love loved it. Best days. Still close friends with all my then 18 yr old housemates now Smile

mctat · 01/09/2017 20:19

Ps they were shocked when they first found out though. Freshers! Grin

PiratePanda · 01/09/2017 20:20

University academic here. Starting at 20 or 21 is fairly normal. don't get me started on the nightmare of students starting under the age of 18

goose1964 · 01/09/2017 20:25

SiL is in his second year, he's 26

Mittens92 · 01/09/2017 20:27

I am almost 25 and in my final year starting October....!

TooSweetForSugar · 01/09/2017 20:28

I was 21 when I went to university- no issue at all

londonrach · 01/09/2017 20:28

No. seriously young. Most people work or take years out. You been to uni op...most are alot older than that!!! I was in my 30s and was one of the young ones!! If you thinking of going op and in your 20s you be one of the young ones!

LetZygonsbeZygones · 01/09/2017 20:30

Gosh no it's not old. My late DF started a BA when he retired and then went on to do a MA. He couldn't study as had to leave school at 15 to contribute to the family income and the was enlisted in the war. He always wished he could have studied so enrolled as a (very) mature student at 67. There are all ages at uni now.

FineAsWeAre · 01/09/2017 20:30

I was 28 when I started my degree and over half my class are older than me 🙂

bigbluebus · 01/09/2017 20:44

My DS is off to Uni in a couple of weeks time. He is 20 - will be 21 in November. He will be living in Halls of Residence. He will not be the only one of that age, I'm sure.

Ohyesiam · 01/09/2017 20:49

I was 29 when I started my first degree.

AccrualIntentions · 01/09/2017 20:51

Not at all! You might even enjoy it more, I was more confident and outgoing at 20 in third year than I was at 18 in first year. There were a few people in my halls who were a couple of years older.

ScarletSienna · 01/09/2017 20:53

In my halls, there was only one person who went to uni straight after 6th form. Everyone else had taken at least 1 or 2 gap years. It was a mix of ages beteeen 18 and 24.

dingdongdigeridoo · 01/09/2017 20:55

I graduated at 28! In my access course I was one of the younger students. Lots of parents in their 30s and 40s who were changing career or looking to take a step up.

My uni was about 25% mature students but it varies. Most people mingled and age wasn't a big deal.

NC4now · 01/09/2017 20:57

I was 19 when I started, turned 20 in the first semester. Lots of my friends were the same, some a year or two older. I tended to be drawn to the 'not straight through school' crowd, and there were loads of us in halls.

Kat160417 · 01/09/2017 21:01

I work at a uni and a lady started on the nursing course who was in her 50s. She probably wasn't in halls but yeah 20 definitely isnt too old
