Just that. For an undergrad, moving away situation?

No. I did my degree part time over six years. I started at 18 didn't finish until 24, there were students much older than me.

LIZS · 01/09/2017 17:48

Not unusual

FlakeBook · 01/09/2017 17:48

A 20 year old won't stand out AT ALL. It's not like school where everyone is in a class with people born in the same year! There will be some school leavers, but plenty more who have done other things first, whether for a year or a decade.

Troupee3 · 01/09/2017 17:49

Yes :) I did 1 AS and spent the rest of my time volunteering/working (for 3 years) and am now 19, would like to start an access course this year but feel too old to go to uni the year I turn 21 and that's the year my 2 sisters graduated Shock

OP posts:
newtlover · 01/09/2017 17:50

well, I was 50 when I started so no!

Ithastobeheinz · 01/09/2017 17:50

My ds is going away to uni next week.
10 days later he will be 20.
The other students in his halls flat are between 18-20 so no I don't think it's to old.

newtlover · 01/09/2017 17:51

there's a lot to be said for growing up a bit before you go to university

sonjadog · 01/09/2017 17:52

When you start studying, you will find that university study attracts all ages of people. You won´t stand out at all. Presumably your sisters went straight from school? Lots don´t.

ragz134 · 01/09/2017 17:53

I'm 32. Not in Halls though, that would be weird at my age but fine at 20. My DSis is going next year at 22.

I'm 20, going into my second year, and I'm not the oldest in my year!

donajimena · 01/09/2017 17:55

45 year old soon to be Fresher here Grin

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 01/09/2017 17:56

I see, well good luck, don't let your siblings tease you you'll be past it.

DramaAlpaca · 01/09/2017 17:56

My DS will be going next year when he's almost 21.

Troupee3 · 01/09/2017 17:56

So 20 wouldn't be too old to go into halls?

I know no one is too old for uni! :) but to go to uni and move away, etc. etc..

Troupee3 · 01/09/2017 17:56

I'm November born so would almost be 21

I went at 23, moved into halls and then house shares. The living with teenagers was a bit frustrating at times but then I've always been an old fart. There was a big age range on my course.

FoofFighter · 01/09/2017 17:56

I'm mid 40s and starting my first year next week, goodness sakes... Hmm

DCFlemingreportingforduty · 01/09/2017 17:57

I think it sounds an ideal age to go to university. I was academically precocious and I went at 17. The work was no problem, but I was socially quite awkward and very isolated. I was lucky enough to be able to live in my own flat (in London), but this made my isolation even worse. I did not have the typical UG uni experience at all and I didn't enjoy it much. I socially came into my own during my postgraduate degrees (Oxbridge).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/09/2017 17:57

You may find that you get more out of university having a bit of extra life experience. I think those of us who were a bit older tended to have made an active choice to go to university rather than having drifted into it.

Troupee3 · 01/09/2017 17:57

Foof I assume your moving out and living there, yeah? I did put that in my OP

urbanrock · 01/09/2017 18:01

I started uni at 23 and fitted in fine. There were loads of older people on my course. 20/21 is fine!

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 01/09/2017 18:02

I was 28 when I started.... I was far from the oldest... It was good being this age... Was young enough to be accepted by the 18 year olds and also by the post 35 year old group...

Honestly you won't stick out at all.... And tbh no one much asks your age...

So your alternative is what?? Not going cos someone may realise you're not coming directly from school??

hellokittymania · 01/09/2017 18:03

I must be ancient then! No, 20 is definitely not too old. It's a baby.

RosieTheRiveting · 01/09/2017 18:03

I know lots of my peers (not me) who went to uni at 16, so I would previously have said yes.

But that was in the 80s; now it seems the norm to be a bit older.
