Just that. For an undergrad, moving away situation?

It was very obvious those students who had some time out... Even I c only a gap year.

They were more fun, studied harder and played harder!

Tighnabruaich · 01/09/2017 18:05

No!

acornsandnuts · 01/09/2017 18:06

I did an access course and the average age was 28 so definable not too old. In fact you would have been one of the babies of the course.

user1andonly · 01/09/2017 18:07

It's absolutely fine. Honestly, it seems like a big age difference to you now but you'll look back in 20 years time and wonder what you were worried about! My DS1 shared a house with a 23 year old in 2nd and 3rd year and he was just one of the lads (he also lived in halls during first year)

There will be loads of students who've done gap years or had false starts at sixth form and repeated a year etc etc. You'll be fine.

dd started uni at 20 and lived in halls with two other twenty year olds and one 22 year old

ladybirdsaredotty · 01/09/2017 18:08

I went at 19 having not had a gap year (Sept birthday). I loved it but messed around, drank and smoked etc too much. I did scrape a 2.1 but spent way too much money! Went again at 27 (although only lasted 6 months) and was the model student who everyone copied from 😉

I'm hoping to go again (for professional degree/postgrad) in a few years. I'll probably be touching 40. Who cares?! Do what suits you.

PinkCrystal · 01/09/2017 18:10

I was 38 when I started Grin

Criceta · 01/09/2017 18:11

Do it, OP! I was 20 when I started (gap year, then dropped out and re-started the following year). I thought I'd be the oldest but wasn't. Made great friends who were one or two years younger than me - a year or two at that age really doesn't matter!

sonjadog · 01/09/2017 18:13

21 is a great age to move away. You are old enough to have fun and party without being stupid about it, and you won´t freak out at being responsible for yourself.

You´ll have a great time. Do it!!

crazyhairbear · 01/09/2017 18:17

I went to uni when I was 22. I lived in halls and the girls I was put with were also 20-22. We had the best time! 20 is definitely not to old to move to halls and start uni... Go for it, it was the best time of my life!

GhostsToMonsoon · 01/09/2017 18:18

There were some students when I was at university who had had a gap year, then been to university, didn't like the course so changed, and were thus 20 at the start of the year. Plus people who'd had gap years, foreign students and lots of mature students. I actually was put off having a gap year because I thought nearly 20 was old to be starting university, which seems silly in hindsight.

SuzukiLi · 01/09/2017 18:19

I hope not! I start in a few weeks and I'm about to turn 24!

flumpybear · 01/09/2017 18:22

No I was 23 when I went and fitted in wel, there were others there who were older than me

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 01/09/2017 18:28

I was 20 when I started my first year, and I would say at least half my year were as well!

Fitzsimmons · 01/09/2017 18:29

DH went when he was 18. He dropped out after a term and freely admits he was too young and didn't take it seriously. He went back at 21 and took it much more seriously, eventually going on to do a PhD and becoming an expert in his field. There's a lot of benefit to going when you're a bit older.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 01/09/2017 18:30

I went at 18 but quite a few older people on course and no one batted an eyelid! I think the fact you have some work/volunteering experience will help you stand out from your peers when you graduate. I found myself overqualified but under experienced when I graduated. Good luck. :)

Leeds2 · 01/09/2017 18:36

You will be absolutely fine. When I was at uni, mid '80s, there were lots who had had a gap year, so 20 during first year. My own DD has just completed her first year (straight after sixth form). Lots of her school friends have had gap years, some are planning on two gap years (health reasons, or working to earn some money). Friend's DD starts this September; she is already 21. Really not a problem.

PinguForPresident · 01/09/2017 18:39

I went into Halls when I went yo Uni. I was 26. i had an absolute ball.

I'm now doing another degree, and the people on my course were aged between 18 and 49 when we started.

MrsJayy · 01/09/2017 18:42

Dd wont be going till next september and 20 she will hqve done 3 years of college by then she said she waan't mature enough at 17 (you can go at 17 here) so no I don't think it is quite old

Rarotonga · 01/09/2017 18:43

It's absolutely fine.

SomeOtherFuckers · 01/09/2017 18:44

Not at all... loads of my mates in first year were 21/22 and a few were late 20s ... my best mates were 25 ...

SomeOtherFuckers · 01/09/2017 18:45

Plus you're likely to do much better at that age tbh

LemonRedwood · 01/09/2017 18:46

Not at all. I started uni at 20, having taken a 2-year gap to work.

SomeOtherFuckers · 01/09/2017 18:46

It's the age when those who went straight away graduated ... but I'd say only 60% are 18 when they start

yongnian · 01/09/2017 18:47

I went at 20 as did a foundation year and had a year out. I did actually feel a bit out of the swim - not old enough to hang with the mature students....but had crammed far too much 'life experience' (and not in a good way) in the meantime to fit in.
Also my living circs were dictated to by the controlling abusive shit I'd hooked up with meantime so I didn't do the live-in student thing either, which with hindsight was a big mistake.
Consequently I didn't get much out of my uni experience, which I felt quite sad about for a long time.
