To be upset with my DM

For calling my beloved cat a large rat?!
Cat is tiny (although adult) and grey - and admittedly looks somewhat rat-like when she sits in a certain position.

But DM has a phobia of rodents and refuses to come round unless the cat is shut in another room.

AIBU to say no way. Love me, love my cat?

Yes they do

They really really do not. And if you think pets have actual human emotions you need a) help and b) not to have pets.

SoftKittySillyKitty · 31/08/2017 18:51

Don't be daft. She's your mother. She's done more for you than your damn cat!

Seemed a touch aggressive to me but hey no bother

Then you are very sensitive. And read far too much into words on a screen.

I love my cat. I'd rather have a mother though. Count yourself lucky you have both.

errrr.....emotions/feelings are something all sentient beings experience.
They are not exclusive to homosapiens!

Fear, pain, hunger, love, concern, excitement, shyness etc, i'm sure they experience it all.
Just look at some of the clips from abattoirs if you don't think animals have any 'emotions'.
Or clips of animals being used in vivisection

I've always viewed 'emotion' as energy in motion
E.g -
Cat feels scared, so cat will run away/hiss
Cat feels love, so cat will give me nose bumps and associated body language
Cat feels ignored/wants attention, cat will become very verbal/start being mischievous to get attention

My cats might not be arsed about being shut away in a room but I certainly am.

I think you will find the human emotions are in fact exclusive to homosapiens.

She has a phobia of rodents and therefore is scared of your cat. That makes no sense.

Surely if she scared of the cat the phobia would be of felines. Rodents and felines are completely different species.

That's like saying you have a phobia of cattle and therefore can't be around horses.

Mrscropley · 31/08/2017 19:27

My dgm used to call our rottweiler "that rot thing 'she adored her really!!

HeebieJeebies456 · 31/08/2017 19:35

just because humans experience them as well does not mean they are exclusively felt by humans only!

grandOlejukeofYork · 31/08/2017 19:37

HUMAN EMOTIONS are EXCLUSIVE to HUMANS. By definition.

Have you been at the catnip?

FeckTheMagicDragon · 31/08/2017 19:44

If she has green eyes, a Siamese slim build, gentle, affectionate but a bit skittish and not very vocal she's probably a Russian Blue. Wonderful cats. I have two :)

Ttbb · 31/08/2017 19:55

Maybe it will look lessrat like with a collar? It may also grow?

alisonyawn · 31/08/2017 20:02

Do we have the same mother?!
My mum also calls my grey cat Rat..

She doesn't refuse to come in my house because of her though 😂 your mother sounds overly dramatic and looking for attention 😂

SaucyJack · 31/08/2017 20:17

Your mother needs to build a bridge and get over herself.

No one cares if you like someone else's cat, or not. Just drink your tea and shut up.

Hiphopopotamus · 31/08/2017 20:41

There really is no reasoning with animal crazies!

Titanz · 31/08/2017 20:47

HUMAN EMOTIONS are EXCLUSIVE to HUMANS. By definition

Just because you've slapped human in front of it doesn't mean those emotions are monopolized by humans. Perhaps you'd like to read the studies re. Oxytocin release in dogs?

This.

grandOlejukeofYork · 31/08/2017 20:53

No, I would not. I think you have spectacularly missed the point.

And are severely anthropomorphising your pets. You can't assign human emotions to cats, its ridiculous.
Maybe they have them and maybe they don't, but we do know that they do not have them in the same way that humans do.

Titanz · 31/08/2017 21:04

You won't because then you would have to admit you're wrong in some respects, because despite being primitive to our human emotional capabilities, animals can and do experience and display emotions.

Acknowledging that doesn't mean we treat them like humans, or think they're cognitively like us.

But you can carry on belittling those who do no harm, just love their animals and ensure they're properly taken care of and treated well.

Ceto · 31/08/2017 22:58

Why would you be prepared to shut your pet away for the sake of someone who has allergies, but not someone who has a phobia? It's a health condition you can't control, so essentially the same thing.

Winosaurus · 31/08/2017 23:00

It's a cat. She is your mother... they're not even in the sand league. Just put your cat in a different room for an hour, what's the issue?

grandOlejukeofYork · 31/08/2017 23:01

You won't because then you would have to admit you're wrong in some respects, because despite being primitive to our human emotional capabilities, animals can and do experience and display emotions

The research suggests that they do not and are not capable of experiencing higher emotions.
And I'm not wrong. You didn't read before you replied. Only humans have human emotions. Cats have, at best, primitive and fundamental emotions such as fear.

Sarahsue1 · 31/08/2017 23:03

This is hilarious - the most cuckoo thread i've read on mn. 'Cats emotions' 'belittle people who love their pets' for gods sake give me STRENGTH. Who are these people in real life?...... nut nuts. Cannot take this seriously. Clearly there are pet owners / lovers and then there are ... i don't know what. Something weird.

Alltheprettydoggies · 31/08/2017 23:04

Not really, she just expects me to capitulate. And then pouts when I don't
I figure that with your attitude, that would be your constant state as well

Alltheprettydoggies · 31/08/2017 23:07

aww! I know, right? How dare people have a way they prefer to live, in their own home!
God, what is this world coming to!
