To ask where ethnic minority Brits holiday in U.K.?

I know I'm going to be flamed for asking this, but I can hardly ask irl!

I live in south devon in a very popular holiday area. The area is very white middle class. I noticed a few years ago that almost all the people who holiday here are also white Brits. Since noticing this I keep wondering where all the ethnic minorities British people go on holiday.

I travel to other south westerly holiday resorts a lot with my work (hotel industry) and it seems to be the case there too.

If 82% of the population are white, why are at least 95% (a rough estimate from looking out at the harbour the last few days) of grockles white?

Don't fear Clueless - I seen some black people down Penzance yesterday! Hmm

TinyBarista · 30/08/2017 20:53

Um,,, What's a grockle

PeaFaceMcgee · 30/08/2017 20:53

Grockle is Devonian word for tourist.

CluelessBint · 30/08/2017 20:54

Ethnic minorities often take time to go abroad to see their families. A lot of people also find it more 'holiday-y' in warmer climates.

shakeyourcaboose · 30/08/2017 20:56

All right.....

Fauchelevent · 30/08/2017 20:56

Since I get stared at in the SE as much as I get stared at abroad, I opt for the sunnier option. I have holidayed in the UK maybe twice, and only once by choice. My family tended to go abroad and I tend to go abroad. I haven't seen much of England aside from daytrips but I don't mind.

AdalindSchade · 30/08/2017 20:57

Dunno
My parents have a holiday let in Devon and their two groups of guest this weekend were Pakistani Muslim family and a black/white couple.

Partypolitics99 · 30/08/2017 20:59

I have noticed that a lot more Asian people seems to be holidaying in the Lake District. Met a lovely couple there this year who wanted to know all about it and were is best to stay and visit

babyturtles · 30/08/2017 21:00

Devon has a 1.54% of "Asian" denomination compared to the national average of 5.87% - so you have less ethnic minorities there in the first place to see.

If you're 6+ hours drive away, like me, it's cheaper to go abroad than see what SW England has to offer for a holiday.

BoysofMelody · 30/08/2017 21:00

I don't know, if you give us 10 minutes, I'll ask them.

charlestonchaplin · 30/08/2017 21:02

I think many first and perhaps second generation immigrants aren't quite so wedded to the British idea of an annual holiday.

greendale17 · 30/08/2017 21:02

My ethnic friends always holiday abroad- they say it's better and cheaper

CluelessBint · 30/08/2017 21:03

I know we have less ethnic minorities to start with, do you think that can make it seem less attractive to other ethnic minorities considering staying here?

your figures are a bit off, white British population is more like 87- 88% of the population. Ethnic minorities are concentrated in London, Midlands, the north, South Devon is a long way

We are a mixed heritage family, over the summer we have seen black families in Wales, Penzance, St Ives, Western Super Mare and Greece, much the same as the white folks really

marriednotdead · 30/08/2017 21:03

I second the visiting home country theory. As well as the consideration that many darker skinned people originate from sunnier climes and definitely want some guaranteed heat on holiday!

I have brown skin (mixed race) and have had a few cheapo breaks on the south coast over the years but tend to get on a plane when I can to somewhere with no Engleesh breakfasts and lager louts.

Bisquick · 30/08/2017 21:03

I'm an ethnic minority Brit, we often go to Asia for our holidays to spend time with extended family. Or travel elsewhere in the world (long haul holidays). I've been to Wales a few times for the literary fest, and to Edinburgh once. We don't drive though so that sort of limits our UK holiday options.

I went to Cornwall last year and for the first time in my life, I noticed the stares. In mixed (black/white) btw.

Went to sunny Barcelona this summer and had a lively time. Didn't feel like a freak on holiday.

glasshalfemp · 30/08/2017 21:05

The truth......Being stared at when you leave the capital is no fun and horrid for the kids. So 'warmer' more diverse places in the world are preferred. If money is short I know many will miss a few years of holidays and save up rather than 'waste' money being made to feel like a leper at 'cheaper' destinations.

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 30/08/2017 21:06

Wtf and there are middle class areas in Devon? You learn something new everyday. Where do middle class people from Devon holiday?

Amanduh · 30/08/2017 21:06

I commented on this as well actually when in the Cotswolds over the summer. Only because it dawned on me how similar everyone was, and how there really wasn't a multicultural mix of ethnicities. As JoJoMS2 said though actually some people of ethnic minorities that I know, my two neighbours and one of my friends for example, go to where their families live abroad on holiday. My colleague does also. They are from Pakistan, China and Ghana.

Also I think actually thinking about those places, the local people are by a very large majority white. So probably what I've found is that they are predominately white areas anyway.

CluelessBint · 30/08/2017 21:06

Sorry ted only got my figures from a very quick google!

Thanks for everyone's input. I know it's a silly thing but I've been wondering it for ages. Also as I work in the hotel industry but am too much of a bumpkin to have ever lived anywhere particularly diverse it would be good to know if people weren't coming here because it wasn't welcoming enough or something.

We have lots of people from the Midlands come to South Wales. So a high percentage are of an ethnic minority. Its either South Wales or Weston.
